Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Vehicular Communications

We investigate the use of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a millimeter-wave (mmWave) vehicular communication network. An intelligent reflecting surface consists of passive elements, which can reflect the incoming signals with adjustable phase shifts. By properly tuning the phase shifts we can improve link performance. This is known as phase optimization or passive beamforming. We consider the problem of rate maximization in the uplink, which utilizes an IRS. However, using an IRS brings more challenges in terms of channel estimation. We propose two schemes to reduce the channel estimation overhead associated with utilizing an IRS. One method uses the grouping of reflecting elements and the other one performs passive beamforming based on the position of the device. Numerical results show IRS can bring significant improvements to existing communication. Furthermore, to get a practical insight into vehicular communications aided by an IRS, we use a commercial ray-tracing tool to evaluate the performance.

White Paper on Broadband Connectivity in 6G

This white paper explores the road to implementing broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, from extreme capacity with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps, to raising the typical data rates by orders-of-magnitude, to support broadband connectivity at railway speeds up to 1000 km/h. To achieve these goals, not only the terrestrial networks will be evolved but they will also be integrated with satellite networks, all facilitating autonomous systems and various interconnected structures. We believe that several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/ algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric and scalable cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. The latter path will lead to THz communications complemented by visible light communications in specific scenarios. At the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latencies, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. Different options will be needed to optimally support different use cases. The resource efficiency can be further improved by using various combinations of full-duplex radios, interference management based on rate-splitting, machine-learning-based optimization, coded caching, and broadcasting.

Partially Permuted Multi-Trellis Belief Propagation for Polar Codes

Belief propagation (BP) is an iterative decoding algorithm for polar codes which can be parallelized effectively to achieve higher throughput. However, because of the presence of error floor due to cycles and stopping sets in the factor graph, the performance of the BP decoder is far from the performance of state of the art cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided successive cancellation list (CA-SCL) decoders. It has been shown that successive BP decoding on multiple permuted factor graphs, which is called the multi-trellis BP decoder, can improve the error performance. However, when permuting the entire factor graph, since the decoder dismisses the information from the previous permutation, the number of iterations required is significantly larger than that of the standard BP decoder. In this work, we propose a new variant of the multi-trellis BP decoder which permutes only a subgraph of the original factor graph. This enables the decoder to retain information of variable nodes in the subgraphs, which are not permuted, reducing the required number of iterations needed in-between the permutations. As a result, the proposed decoder can perform permutations more frequently, hence being more effective in mitigating the effect of cycles which cause oscillation errors. Experimental results show that for a polar code with block length 1024 and rate 0.5 the error performance gain of the proposed decoder at the frame error rate of 10^(-6) is 0.25 dB compared to multi-trellis decoder based on full permutations. This performance gain is achieved along with reduced latency in terms of the number of iterations.

Factory Automation: Resource Allocation of an Elevated LiDAR System with URLLC Requirements

Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) play a vital role in factory automation. To share the situational awareness data collected from the infrastructure as raw or processed data, the system should guarantee the URLLC capability since this is a safety-critical application. In this work, the resource allocation problem for an infrastructure-based communication architecture (Elevated LiDAR system/ ELiD) has been considered which can support the autonomous driving in a factory floor. The decoder error probability and the number of channel uses parameterize the reliability and the latency in the considered optimization problems. A maximum decoder error probability minimization problem and a total energy minimization problem have been considered in this work to analytically evaluate the performance of the ELiD system under different vehicle densities.

Hierarchical User Clustering for mmWave-NOMA Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and mmWave are two complementary technologies that can support the capacity demand that arises in 5G and beyond networks. The increasing number of users are served simultaneously while providing a solution for the scarcity of the bandwidth. In this paper we present a method for clustering the users in a mmWave-NOMA system with the objective of maximizing the sum-rate. An unsupervised machine learning technique, namely, hierarchical clustering is utilized which does the automatic identification of the optimal number of clusters. The simulations prove that the proposed method can maximize the sum-rate of the system while satisfying the minimum QoS for all users without the need of the number of clusters as a prerequisite when compared to other clustering methods such as k-means clustering.

Positioning of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Base Stations in future Wireless Network

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base stations (BSs) are reliable and efficient alternative to full fill the coverage and capacity requirements when the backbone network fails to provide such requirements due to disasters. In this paper, we consider optimal UAV-deployment problem in 3D space for a mmWave network. The objective is to deploy multiple aerial BSs simultaneously to completely serve the ground users. We develop a novel algorithm to find the feasible positions for a set of UAV-BSs from a predefined set of locations, subject to a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint of every associated user, UAV-BS's limited hovering altitude constraint and restricted operating zone constraint. We cast this 3D positioning problem as an l_0 minimization problem. This is a combinatorial, NP-hard problem. We approximate the l_0 minimization problem as non-combinatorial l_1-norm problem. Therefore, we provide a suboptimal algorithm to find a set of feasible locations for the UAV-BSs to operate. The analysis shows that the proposed algorithm achieves a set of the location to deploy multiple UVA-BSs simultaneously while satisfying the constraints.

Admission Control in 5G Networks for the Coexistence of eMBB-URLLC Users

In this paper, we consider the problem of admission control in 5G networks where enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) users and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) users are coexisting. URLLC users require low latency and high reliability while eMBB users require high data rates. Thus, it is essential to control the admission of eMBB users while giving priority to all URLLC users in a network where both types of users are coexisting. Our aim is to maximize the number of admitted eMBB users to the system with a guaranteed data rate while allocating resources to all URLLC users. We formulated this as an l_0 minimization problem. Since it is an NP-hard problem we have used approximation methods and sequential convex programming to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerically we have shown that the proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal performance. Our algorithm is able to maximize the number of admitted eMBB users with an optimal allocation of resources while giving priority to all URLLC users.

An Initial Access Optimization Algorithm for millimeter Wave 5G NR Networks

The millimeter wave (mmWave) communication uses directional antennas. Hence, achieving fine alignment of transmit and receive beams at the initial access phase is quite challenging and time-consuming. In this paper, we provide a dynamic-weight based beam sweeping direction and synchronization signal block (SSB) allocation algorithm to optimize the cell search of the initial access in mmWave 5G NR networks. The number of SSBs transmitted in each beam sweeping direction depends on previously learned experience which is based on the number of detected UEs (user equipment) per SSB for each sweeping direction. Overall, numerical simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is shown to be capable of detecting more users with a lower misdetection probability. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve the same performance with a smaller number of dynamic resource (i.e., SSB) allocation, compared to constant resource allocation.

Block Error Performance of NOMA with HARQ-CC in Finite Blocklength

This paper investigates the performance of a two-user downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system using hybrid automatic repeat request with chase combining (HARQ-CC) in finite blocklength. First, an analytical framework is developed by deriving closed-form approximations for the individual average block error rate (BLER) of the near and the far user. Based upon that, the performance of NOMA is discussed in comparison to orthogonal multiple access (OMA), which draws the conclusion that NOMA outperforms OMA in terms of user fairness. Further, an algorithm is devised to determine the required blocklength and power allocation coefficients for NOMA that satisfies reliability targets for the users. The required blocklength for NOMA is compared to OMA, which shows NOMA has a lower blocklength requirement in high transmit signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions, leading to lower latency than OMA when reliability requirements in terms of BLER for the two users are in the order of 10^(-5).

High Reliability Downlink MU-MIMO: New OSTBC Approach and Superposition Modulated Side Information

In this paper, a proposal to improve the reliability of a downlink multiuser (MU) MIMO transmission scheme is investigated with the use of a new approach in orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) and network coding with a superposition modulated system and side information. With the new encoded OSTBC approach, diversity is offered where each user receives all other users' symbols, which allows the recovery of symbols in several ways. In addition, multiple users can be accommodated with the same resource, which is quite useful in a wireless system where resources are always restricted. By employing superposition modulation, the side information needed for error recovery can be transmitted over the same resource used for the normal information frame. In addition, the proposed system exploits diversity through a novel technique of sub-constellation alignment-based signal combining for efficient side information dissemination. A detailed analysis of the new OSTBC approach is carried out. It is shown that the performance of the MU-MIMO system can be improved significantly in terms of block and frame error rates (BLER, FER) considered as reliability measures. By accommodating a reasonable number of multiple users, high reliability is achieved at the expense of the rate. To compensate for the low rate, conventional OSTBC can be considered and simulation results are shown, where, as a penalty to pay, multiple orthogonal resources are required.

Low Complexity Autoencoder based End-to-End Learning of Coded Communications Systems

End-to-end learning of a communications system using the deep learning-based autoencoder concept has drawn interest in recent research due to its simplicity, flexibility and its potential of adapting to complex channel models and practical system imperfections. In this paper, we have compared the bit error rate (BER) performance of autoencoder based systems and conventional channel coded systems with convolutional coding (CC), in order to understand the potential of deep learning-based systems as alternatives to conventional systems. From the simulations, autoencoder implementation was observed to have a better BER in 0-5 dB $E_{b}/N_{0}$ range than its equivalent half-rate convolutional coded BPSK with hard decision decoding, and to have only less than 1 dB gap at a BER of $10^{-5}$. Furthermore, we have also proposed a novel low complexity autoencoder architecture to implement end-to-end learning of coded systems in which we have shown better BER performance than the baseline implementation. The newly proposed low complexity autoencoder was capable of achieving a better BER performance than half-rate 16-QAM with hard decision decoding over the full 0-10 dB $E_{b}/N_{0}$ range and a better BER performance than the soft decision decoding in 0-4 dB $E_{b}/N_{0}$ range.

Low Latency Decoder for Short Blocklength Polar Codes

Polar codes have been gaining a lot of interest due to it being the first coding scheme to provably achieve the symmetric capacity of a binary memoryless channel with an explicit construction. However, the main drawback of polar codes is the low throughput of its successive cancellation (SC) decoding. Simplified SC decoding algorithms of polar codes can be used to reduce the latency of the polar decode by faster processing of specific sub-codes in the polar code. By combining simplified SC with a list decoding technique, such as SC list (SCL) decoding, polar codes can cater to the two conflicting requirements of high reliability and low latency in ultra-reliable low-latency (URLLC) communication systems. Simplified SC algorithm recognizes some special nodes in the SC decoding tree, corresponding to the specific subcodes in the polar code construction, and efficiently prunes the SC decoding tree, without traversing the sub-trees and computing log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for each child node. However, this decoding process still suffers from the latency associated with the serial nature of SC decoding. We propose some new algorithms to process new types of node patterns that appear within multiple levels of pruned sub-trees and it enables to process of certain nodes in parallel. In short blocklength polar codes, our proposed algorithm can achieve up to $13\%$ latency reduction from fast-simplified SC \cite{Sarkis2013} without any performance degradation. Furthermore, it can achieve up to $27\%$ latency reduction if small error-correcting performance degradation is allowed.

Contextual Bandit Learning for Machine Type Communications in the Null Space of Multi-Antenna Systems

In this paper, a novel approach based on the concept of opportunistic spatial orthogonalization (OSO) is proposed for interference management between machine type communications (MTC) and conventional cellular communications. In particular, a cellular system is considered with a multi-antenna BS in which a receive beamformer is designed to maximize the rate of a cellular user, and, a machine type aggregator (MTA) that receives data from a large set of MTDs. If there is a large number of MTDs to choose from for transmission at each time for each beamformer, one MTD can be selected such that it causes almost no interference on the BS. A comprehensive analytical study of the characteristics of such interference from several MTDs on the same beamformer is carried out. It is proven that, for each beamformer, an MTD exists such that the interference on the BS is negligible. However, the optimal implementation of OSO requires the CSI of all the links in the BS, which is not practical for MTC. To solve this problem, an online learning method based on the concept of contextual multi-armed bandits (MAB) learning is proposed. Simulation results show that is possible to implement OSO with no CSI from MTDs to the BS.

Network Slicing with Mobile Edge Computing for Micro-Operator Networks in Beyond 5G

We model the scenarios of network slicing allocation for the micro-operator (MO) network. The MO creates the slices "as a service" of wireless resource and then allocates these slices to multiple mobile network operators (MNOs). We propose the slice allocation problem of multiple MNOs with the goal of maximizing the social welfare of the network defined as sum rate of all MNOs. The many-to-one matching game framework is adopted to solve this problem. Then, the generic Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is introduced for the computation of game theoretical solution. After the MNOs obtain the slices, for each small cell base station (SBS), we investigate the role of power allocation using Q-learning and uniform power. We numerically show that the solution of the matching game leads to two-sided stable matching. Furthermore, for each MNO, we explore the problem of infrastructure cost minimization constrained on the latency at the user equipment (UE). The optimal solution is given by a greedy fractional knapsack algorithm. We illustrate that it is sufficient for the MNO to use a small fraction of the SBS to serve the UE while satisfying the latency constraint. For the problem of overall data rate maximization, we numerically show that the power allocation has significant effect on the social welfare of the system.

Autonomous Driving without a Burden: View from Outside with Elevated LiDAR

The current autonomous driving architecture places a heavy burden in signal processing for the graphics processing units (GPUs) in the car. This directly translates into battery drain and lower energy efficiency, crucial factors in electric vehicles. This is due to the high bit rate of the captured video and other sensing inputs, mainly due to Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor at the top of the car which is an essential feature in autonomous vehicles. LiDAR is needed to obtain a high precision map for the vehicle AI to make relevant decisions. However, this is still a quite restricted view from the car. This is the same even in the case of cars without a LiDAR such as Tesla. The existing LiDARs and the cameras have limited horizontal and vertical fields of visions. In all cases it can be argued that precision is lower, given the smaller map generated. This also results in the accumulation of a large amount of data in the order of several TBs in a day, the storage of which becomes challenging. If we are to reduce the effort for the processing units inside the car, we need to uplink the data to edge or an appropriately placed cloud. However, the required data rates in the order of several Gbps are difficult to be met even with the advent of 5G. Therefore, we propose to have a coordinated set of LiDAR's outside at an elevation which can provide an integrated view with a much larger field of vision (FoV) to a centralized decision making body which then sends the required control actions to the vehicles with a lower bit rate in the downlink and with the required latency. The calculations we have based on industry standard equipment from several manufacturers show that this is not just a concept but a feasible system which can be implemented. The proposed system can play a supportive role with existing autonomous vehicle architecture and it is easily applicable in an urban area.

Sleeping Multi-Armed Bandit Learning for Fast Uplink Grant Allocation in Machine Type Communications

Scheduling fast uplink grant transmissions for machine type communications (MTCs) is one of the main challenges of future wireless systems. In this paper, a novel fast uplink grant scheduling method based on the theory of multi-armed bandits (MABs) is proposed. First, a single quality-of-service metric is defined as a combination of the value of data packets, maximum tolerable access delay, and data rate. Since full knowledge of these metrics for all machine type devices (MTDs) cannot be known in advance at the base station (BS) and the set of active MTDs changes over time, the problem is modeled as a sleeping MAB with stochastic availability and a stochastic reward function. In particular, given that, at each time step, the knowledge on the set of active MTDs is probabilistic, a novel probabilistic sleeping MAB algorithm is proposed to maximize the defined metric. Analysis of the regret is presented and the effect of the prediction error of the source traffic prediction algorithm on the performance of the proposed sleeping MAB algorithm is investigated. Moreover, to enable fast uplink allocation for multiple MTDs at each time, a novel method is proposed based on the concept of best arms ordering in the MAB setting. Simulation results show that the proposed framework yields a three-fold reduction in latency compared to a random scheduling policy since it prioritises the scheduling of MTDs that have stricter latency requirements. Moreover, by properly balancing the exploration versus exploitation tradeoff, the proposed algorithm can provide system fairness by allowing the most important MTDs to be scheduled more often while also allowing the less important MTDs to be selected enough times to ensure the accuracy of estimation of their importance.

Resource Allocation for Co-Primary Spectrum Sharing in MIMO Networks

We study co-primary spectrum sharing concept in two small cell multiuser network. Downlink transmission is explored with Rayleigh fading in interfering broadcast channel. Both base stations and all the users are equipped with multiple antennas. Resource allocation with joint precoder and decoder design is proposed for weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem. The problem becomes mixed-integer and non-convex. We factor the main objective problem into two subproblems. First subproblem is multiuser with subcarrier allocation where we assume that each subcarrier can be allocated to multiple users. Gale-Shapley algorithm based on stable marriage problem and transportation method are implemented for subcarrier allocation part. For the second subproblem, a joint precoder and decoder design is proposed to obtain the optimal solution for WSR maximization. Monte Carlo simulation is employed to obtain the results.
