Emergent quantum Majorana metal from a chiral spin liquid

We propose a mechanism to explain the emergence of an intermediate gapless spin liquid phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in an externally applied magnetic field, sandwiched between the well-known gapped chiral spin liquid and the gapped partially polarized phase. We propose that, in moderate fields, $π$-fluxes nucleate in the ground state and trap Majorana zero modes. As these fluxes proliferate with increasing field, the Majorana zero modes overlap creating an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum Majorana metallic state with a `Fermi surface' at zero energy. We further show that the Majorana spectral function captures the dynamical spin and dimer correlations obtained by the infinite Projected Entangled Pair States method, thereby validating our variational approach.

Fractionalization Signatures in the Dynamics of Quantum Spin Liquids

We investigate the signatures of fractionalization in quantum spin liquids by studying different phases of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field through which the model becomes non-integrable. Using the infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS) ansatz, along with analytical calculations and exact diagonalization, we calculate dynamical signatures of fractionalized particles through spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. Our analysis demonstrates the ability of these correlations to discern distinct fractionalized quantum sectors, namely Majorana fermions and the emergent $Z_2$ fluxes, in both the chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase under weak field and the emergent intermediate gapless phase (IGP) under moderate field. Importantly, our calculation reveals the nature of IGP observed at moderate fields, a region of ongoing debate, indicating that this phase is a Majorana metal induced by strong flux fluctuations.

Thermopower probing emergent local moments in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Recent experiments on magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBLG) have revealed the formation of flatbands, suggesting that correlation effects are likely to dominate in this system. Yet, a global transport measurement showing distinct signatures of strong correlations like local moments arising from the flatbands is missing. Utilizing thermopower as a sensitive global transport probe for measuring entropy, we unveil the presence of emergent local moments through their impact on entropy. Remarkably, in addition to sign changes at the Dirac point ($ν= 0$) and full band filling ($ν= \pm 4$), the thermopower of MATBLG demonstrates additional sign changes at the location, $ν_{cross} \sim \pm 1$, which do not vary with temperature from $5K$ to $\sim 60K$. This is in contrast to sensitive temperature-dependent crossing points seen in our study on twisted bilayer graphene devices with weaker correlations. Further, we have investigated the effect of magnetic field ($B$) on the thermopower, both $B_{\parallel}$ and $B_{\perp}$. Our results show a $30\%$ and $50\%$ reduction, respectively, that is consistent with suppression seen in the layered oxide due to the partial polarization of the spin entropy. The observed robust crossing points, together with suppression in a magnetic field, cannot be explained solely from the contributions of band fermions; instead, our data is consistent with the dominant contribution arising from the entropy of the emergent localized moments of a strongly correlated flatband.

Signatures of metal to insulator crossover in the repulsive Fermi Hubbard model through static correlations

Cold atom systems provide a rich platform to realize strongly interacting condensed matter systems, and recent progress in fluorescence imaging technique has enabled identification of nontrivial doublon, singlon, and holon correlation functions. We show that these correlators can be used to identify the conditions under which local moments form in an interacting electronic system. Toward this end, we report a Determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) study of such correlation functions in the two-dimensional repulsive Fermi Hubbard model on a square lattice as a function of doping, interaction strength and temperature. We find definite signatures of the crossover from small U(band regime) to large U(correlated insulator regime). Our key findings are: (1) An opening of a charge gap in the thermodynamic density of states is accompanied by the appearance of temperature insensitive points in the equation of state at finite doping, which can be used to distinguish the band regime in cold atom experiments. (2) Nearest neighbor doublon holon correlations track the opening of charge gap; these compete with density correlations to generate moment moment correlations that show different behavior in the metallic and correlated insulator regime. (3) Non local correlation functions can be used to distinguish between the two regimes, both at and away from half filling. Our results allow comparisons of different correlation functions with recent experimental findings and guide further experimental investigations.

Dimensional reduction of Kitaev spin liquid at quantum criticality

We investigate the fate of the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) under the influence of an external magnetic field $h$ in the [001] direction and upon tuning bond anisotropy of the Kitaev coupling $K_z$ keeping $K_x = K_y = K$. Guided by density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, and with insights from parton mean field theory, we uncover a field-induced gapless-to-gapless Lifshitz transition from the nodal KSL to an intermediate gapless phase. The intermediate phase sandwiched between $h_{c1}$ and $h_{c2}$, which persists for a wide range of anisotropy $K_z/K > 0$, is composed of weakly coupled one-dimensional quantum critical chains. This intermediate phase is a dimensional crossover which asymptotically leads to the one-dimensional quantum Ising criticality characterized by the (1+1)D conformal field theory as the field reaches the phase transition at $h_{c2}$. Beyond $h_{c2}$ the system enters a partially polarized phase describable as effectively decoupled bosonic chains in which spin waves propagate along the one-dimensional zigzag direction. Our findings provide a comprehensive phase diagram and offer insights into the unusual physics of dimensional reduction generated by a uniform magnetic field in an otherwise two-dimensional quantum spin liquid.

Machine learning reveals features of spinon Fermi surface

With rapid progress in simulation of strongly interacting quantum Hamiltonians, the challenge in characterizing unknown phases becomes a bottleneck for scientific progress. We demonstrate that a Quantum-Classical hybrid approach (QuCl) of mining sampled projective snapshots with interpretable classical machine learning can unveil signatures of seemingly featureless quantum states. The Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice under external magnetic field presents an ideal system to test QuCl, where simulations have found an intermediate gapless phase (IGP) sandwiched between known phases, launching a debate over its elusive nature. We use the correlator convolutional neural network, trained on labeled projective snapshots, in conjunction with regularization path analysis to identify signatures of phases. We show that QuCl reproduces known features of established phases. Significantly, we also identify a signature of the IGP in the spin channel perpendicular to the field direction, which we interpret as a signature of Friedel oscillations of gapless spinons forming a Fermi surface. Our predictions can guide future experimental searches for spin liquids.

Autoencoder-based analytic continuation method for strongly correlated quantum systems

The single particle Green's function provides valuable information on the momentum and energy-resolved spectral properties for a strongly correlated system. In large-scale numerical calculations using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), including cluster-DMFT, one usually obtains the Green's function in imaginary-time $G(τ)$. The process of inverting a Laplace transform to obtain the spectral function $A(ω)$ in real-frequency is an ill-posed problem and forms the core of the analytic continuation problem. In this Letter, we propose to use a completely unsupervised autoencoder-type neural network to solve the analytic continuation problem. We introduce an encoder-decoder approach that, together with only minor physical assumptions, can extract a high-quality frequency response from the imaginary time domain. With a deeply tunable architecture, this method can, in principle, locate sharp features of spectral functions that might normally be lost using already well-established methods, such as maximum entropy (MaxEnt) methods. We demonstrate the strength of the autoencoder approach by applying it to QMC results of $G(τ)$ for a single-band Hubbard model. The proposed method is general and can also be applied to other ill-posed inverse problems.

A statistical approach to topological entanglement: Boltzmann machine representation of high-order irreducible correlation

Strongly interacting systems can be described in terms of correlation functions at various orders. A quantum analog of high-order correlations is the topological entanglement in topologically ordered states of matter at zero temperature, usually quantified by topological entanglement entropy (TEE). In this work, we propose a statistical interpretation that unifies the two under the same information-theoretic framework. We demonstrate that the existence of a non-zero TEE can be understood in the statistical view as the emergent $n$th order mutual information $I_n$ (for arbitrary integer $n\ge 3$) reflected in projectively measured samples, which also makes explicit the equivalence between the two existing methods for its extraction -- the Kitaev-Preskill and the Levin-Wen construction. To exploit the statistical nature of $I_n$, we construct a restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) which captures the high-order correlations and correspondingly the topological entanglement that are encoded in the distribution of projected samples by representing the entanglement Hamiltonian of a local region under the proper basis. Furthermore, we derive a closed form which presents a method to interrogate the trained RBM, making explicit the analytical form of arbitrary order of correlations relevant for $I_n$. We remark that the interrogation method for extracting high-order correlation can also be applied to the construction of auxiliary fields that disentangle many-body interactions relevant for diverse interacting models.

Anyon dynamics in field-driven phases of the anisotropic Kitaev model

The Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice with bond-dependent Ising interactions offers an exactly solvable model of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) with gapped $Z_2$ fluxes and gapless linearly dispersing Majorana fermions in the isotropic limit ($K_x=K_y=K_z$). We explore the phase diagram along two axes, an external magnetic field, $h$, applied out-of-plane of the honeycomb, and anisotropic interactions, $K_z$ larger than the other two. For $K_z/K\gg 2$ and $h=0$, the matter Majorana fermions have the largest gap, and the system is described by a gapped $Z_2$ Toric code in which the $Z_2$ fluxes form the low energy bosonic Ising electric (e) and magnetic (m) charges along with their fermionic bound state $ε=e\times m$. In this regime, we find that a small out-of-plane magnetic field creates $ε$ fermions that disperse in fixed one-dimensional directions before the transition to a valence bond solid phase, providing a direct dynamical signature of low energy $Z_2$ Abelian flux excitations separated from the Majorana sector. At lower $K_z$ in the center of the Abelian phase, in a regime we dub the primordial fractionalized (PF) regime, the field generates a hybridization between the $ε$ fermions and the Majorana matter fermions, resulting in a $ψ$ fermion. All the other phases in the field-anisotropy plane are naturally obtained from this primordial soup. We show that in the $Z_2$ Abelian phase, including the PF regime, the dynamical structure factors of local spin flip operators reveal distinct peaks that can be identified as arising from different anyonic excitations. We present in detail their signatures in energy and momentum and propose their identification by inelastic light scattering or inelastic polarized neutron scattering as ``smoking gun" signatures of fractionalization in the QSL phase.

Effects of lattice geometry on thermopower properties of the repulsive Hubbard model

We obtain the Seebeck coefficient or thermopower $S$, which determines the conversion efficiency from thermal to electrical energy, for the two-dimensional Hubbard model on different geometries (square, triangular, and honeycomb lattices) for different electronic densities and interaction strengths. Using Determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) we find the following key results: (a) the bi-partiteness of the lattice affects the doping dependence of $S$; (b) strong electronic correlations can greatly enhance $S$ and produce non-trivial sign changes as a function of doping especially in the vicinity of the Mott insulating phase; (c) $S(T)$ near half filling can show non-monotonic behavior as a function of temperature. We emphasize the role of strong interaction effects in engineering better devices for energy storage and applications, as captured by our calculations of the power factor $PF=S^2 σ$ where $σ$ is the dc conductivity.

Flat Bands Arising from Spin-Orbit Assisted Orbital Frustration

We present general design principles for engineering and discovering periodic systems with flat bands. Our paradigm exploits spin-orbit assisted orbital frustration on a lattice to produce band structures that contain multiplets of narrowly dispersing bands whose bandwidth is smaller than all other energy scales of the problem including the band gap surrounding the flat bands. We present a series of models in 1D and 2D on various lattices with different intracellular spin-orbit like potentials that hybridize the degrees of freedom in the unit cell. As an alternative to machine learning based exhaustive searches, these design principles and models can be used to search for flat band systems in a variety of physical settings and can be used to investigate the role of weakly dispersing highly orbitally frustrated degrees of freedom in systems where the interactions dominate over the kinetic energy scales of the system.

Fast-Scrambling and Operator Confinement Using an Auxiliary Qubit

We introduce a minimal model for realizing a fast-to-slow scrambling transition mediated by an auxiliary central qubit (c-qubit). The c-qubit is coupled to a spin-$1/2$ Ising model with local Ising interactions and tunable c-qubit-spin coupling. Each spin becomes next-nearest neighbor to all others through the c-qubit, which mediates effective all-to-all interactions. As the interaction with the c-spin increases, we find a surprising transition from super-ballistic scrambling and information growth to continuously restricted sub-ballistic entanglement and operator growth. This slow growth occurs on intermediate timescales that extend exponentially with increasing coupling and system size, indicative of logarithmic entanglement growth. We find that in the slow-scrambling regime, the c-qubit Ising interaction allows commuting operators to grow support on all sites rapidly, while operators orthogonal to the interaction become echoed out. This projects local operators to lie in a restricted subspace and prevents extensive operator entanglement growth. We provide exact dynamics of small systems working with non-equilibrium, effective infinite temperature states, and additionally contribute analytic early-time expansions that support the observed rapid scrambling to quantum Zeno-like crossover. Tracing out the central qubit provides a unique translation from the full, closed unitary dynamics to a simple open system construction consisting of a typical spin-chain with hidden qubit degree of freedom.

Superfluid response of an atomically thin, gate-tuned van der Waals superconductor

A growing number of two-dimensional superconductors are being discovered in the family of layered van der Waals (vdW) materials. Due to small sample volume, their characterization has been largely limited to electrical transport measurements. As a consequence, characterization of the diamagnetic response of the superfluid to an applied magnetic field, a defining property of any superconductor, has been lacking. Here, we use a local magnetic probe to directly measure the superfluid response of the tunable, gate-induced superconducting state in MoS$_2$. We find that the backgate changes the superconducting transition temperature non-monotonically whereas the superfluid stiffness at low temperature and the normal state conductivity monotonically increase with backgate voltage. In some devices, we find direct signatures in agreement with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, whereas in others we find a broadened, shallow onset of the superfluid response. We show that the observed behavior is consistent with disorder playing an important role in determining the superconducting properties in superconducting MoS$_2$. Our work demonstrates that magnetic property measurements are within reach for vdW superconductors and reveals that the superfluid response significantly deviates from simple BCS-like behavior.

Detection of long-range entanglement in gapped quantum spin liquids by local measurements

Topological order, reflected in long range patterns of entanglement, is quantified by the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) $γ$. We show that for gapped quantum spin liquids (QSL) it is possible to extract $γ$ using two-spin local correlators. We demonstrate our method for the gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Kitaev spin liquid on a honeycomb lattice with anisotropic interactions. We show that the $γ= \log 2$ for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can be simply extracted from local two-spin correlators across two different bonds, with an accuracy comparable or higher than the Kitaev-Preskill construction. This implies that the different superselection sectors of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory determined by global Wilson loop operators can be fully reflected locally in the matter majorana sector.

Exchange interactions and spin dynamics in the layered honeycomb ferromagnet CrI$_3$

We derive the microscopic spin Hamiltonian for rhombohedral CrI$_3$ using extensive first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations which incorporate spin-orbit coupling and Hubbard U. Our calculations indicate a dominant nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange with weaker further-neighbor Heisenberg terms. In addition, we find a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which primarily drives a topological gap in the spin-wave spectrum at the Dirac point, and uncover a non-negligible antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling between the S=3/2 Cr moments. The out-of-plane magnetic moment is stabilized by weak symmetric bond-dependent terms and a local single-ion anisotropy. Using linear spin wave theory, we find that our exchange parameters are in reasonably good agreement with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Employing classical Monte Carlo simulations, we study the magnetic phase transition temperature $T_c$ and its evolution with an applied in-plane magnetic field. We further demonstrate how future high-resolution INS experiments on the magnon dispersion of single crystals in an in-plane magnetic field may be used to quantitatively extract the strength of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange coupling.

Gapless to gapless phase transitions in quantum spin chains

We investigate spin chains with bilinear-biquadratic (BLBQ) spin interactions as a function of an applied magnetic field $h$. At the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland (ULS) critical point we find a gapless to gapless transition revealed by the dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ as a function of $h$. At $h=0$, the envelope of the lowest energy excitations goes soft at {\it two points} $q_1=2π/3$ and $q_2=4π/3$, dubbed the phase A. With increasing field, the spectral peaks at each of the gapless points bifurcate, making in total {\it four} soft modes, and combine to form a new set of excitations that soften at a {\it single} point $q=π$ at $h_{c1}\approx 0.94$. Beyond $h_{c1}$ the system enters another gapless B-phase until the transition at $h_{c2}=4$ to the fully polarized phase. We compare the ULS model results with those for the AKLT model as a representative of gapped Haldane phase. We explain the mechanism of the gapless to gapless transition in the ULS model using its conserved charges and a spinon band picture. We also discuss the universality of central charges of the BLBQ family of models subjected to a magnetic field.

Subgap two-particle spectral weight in disordered $s$-wave superconductors: Insights from mode coupling approach

We study the two-particle spectral functions and collective modes of weakly disordered superconductors using a disordered attractive Hubbard model on square lattice. We show that the disorder induced scattering between collective modes leads to a finite subgap spectral weight in the long wavelength limit. In general, the spectral weight is distributed between the phase and the Higgs channels, but as we move towards half-filling the Higgs contribution dominates. The inclusion of the density fluctuations lowers the frequency at which this mode occurs, and results in the phase channel gaining a larger contribution to this subgap mode. Near half-filling, the proximity of the system to the charge density wave (CDW) instability leads to strong fluctuations of the effective disorder at the commensurate wave-vector ($[π,π]$). We develop an analytical mode coupling approach where the pure Goldstone mode in the long wavelength limit couples to the collective mode at $[π,π]$. This provides insight into the location and distribution of the two-particle spectral weights between the Higgs and the phase channels.

Entanglement Dynamics between Ising Spins and a Central Ancilla

We investigate competing entanglement dynamics in an open Ising-spin chain coupled to an external central ancilla qudit. In studying the real-time behavior following a quench from an unentangled spin-ancilla state, we find that the ancilla entanglement entropy $S_{vN;\mathcal{A}}$ tracks the dynamical phase transition in the underlying spin system. In this composite setting, purely spin-spin entanglement metrics such as mutual information and quantum Fisher information (QFI) decay as the ancilla entanglement entropy grows. We define multipartite entanglement loss (MEL) as the difference between collective magnetic fluctuations and QFI, which is zero in the pure spin chain limit. MEL directly quantifies the ancilla's effect on the development of spin-spin entanglement. One of our central results is that $MEL(t) \propto e^{S_{vN;\mathcal{A}}(t)}$. Our results provide a platform for exploring composite system entanglement dynamics and suggest that MEL serves as a quantitative estimate of information entropy shared between collective spins and the ancilla qudit. Our results present a new framework that connects physical spin-fluctuations, QFI, and bipartite entanglement entropy between collective quantum systems.
