Spatial Inhomogeneities in Disordered d-Wave Superconductors: Effect on Density of States and Superfluid Stiffness

We study a short coherence length d-wave superconductor with finite density of unitary scatterers using the Bogoliubov-deGennes technique. We find that the low-energy density of states is reduced, the superfluid stiffness is significantly larger and off-diagonal long range order is more robust than the self-consistent T-matrix prediction. These results are a consequence of the inhomogeneous pairing amplitude in the ground state and of the low-lying excitations formed by hybridized impurity resonances. These features, with their nontrivial spatial structure, cannot be adequately described within the conventional T-matrix approach.

Role of Spatial Amplitude Fluctuations in Highly Disordered s-Wave Superconductors

The effect of non-magnetic impurities on 2D s-wave superconductors is studied beyond the weak disorder regime. Within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) framework, the local pairing amplitude develops a broad distribution with significant weight near zero with increasing disorder. Surprisingly, the density of states continues to show a finite spectral gap. The persistence of the spectral gap at large disorder is shown to arise from the break up of the system into superconducting "islands". Superfluid density and off-diagonal correlations show a substantial reduction at high disorder.A simple analysis of phase fluctuations in the highly inhomogeneous BdG state is shown to lead to a transition to a non-superconducting state.

Upper Bounds on the Superfluid Stiffness of Disordered Systems

We derive several upper bounds for the superfluid stiffness $D_s$ for Bose and Fermi systems in terms of expectation values of local operators using linear response theory and variational methods. These give insight into the non-trivial dependence of $D_s$ on parameters such as disorder and interaction in systems with broken continuous translational invariance. Our best variational bound for disordered systems is obtained by allowing the phase twist applied at the boundary to be distributed inhomogeneously within the system. Path integral quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to quantitatively compare the bounds and $D_s$ for disordered interacting Bose systems.

Superconductor-Insulator Transition in a Disordered Electronic System

We study an electronic model of a 2D superconductor with onsite randomness using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The superfluid density is used to track the destruction of superconductivity in the ground state with increasing disorder. The non-superconducting state is identified as an insulator from the temperature dependence of its d.c. resistivity. The value of $σ_{\rm dc}$ at the superconductor-insulator transition appears to be non-universal.

Deviations from Fermi-liquid behavior above $T_c$ in 2D short coherence length superconductors

We show that there are qualitative differences between the temperature dependence of the spin and charge correlations in the normal state of the 2D attractive Hubbard model using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The one-particle density of states shows a pseudogap above $\tc$ with a depleted $N(0)$ with decreasing $T$. The susceptibility $\cs$ and the low frequency spin spectral weight track $N(0)$, which explains the spin-gap scaling: $1/T_1T \sim \cs(T)$. However the charge channel is dominated by collective behavior and the compressibility $dn/dμ$ is $T$-independent. This anomalous ``spin-charge separation'' is shown to exist even at intermediate $|U|$ where the momentum distribution $n(\bk)$ gives evidence for degenerate Fermi system.
