Theoretical and observational constraints on Tachyon Inflation

We constrain several models in Tachyonic Inflation derived from the large-$N$ formalism by considering theoretical aspects as well as the latest observational data. On the theoretical side, we assess the field range of our models by means of the excursion of the equivalent canonical field. On the observational side, we employ BK14+PLANCK+BAO data to perform a parameter estimation analysis as well as a Bayesian model selection to distinguish the most favoured models among all four classes here presented. We observe that the original potential $V \propto \textrm{sech}(T)$ is strongly disfavoured by observations with respect to a reference model with flat priors on inflationary observables. This realisation of Tachyon inflation also presents a large field range which may demand further quantum corrections. We also provide examples of potentials derived from the polynomial and the perturbative classes which are both statistically favoured and theoretically acceptable.

A de Sitter tachyonic braneworld revisited

Within the framework of braneworlds, several interesting physical effects can be described in a wide range of energy scales, starting from high-energy physics to cosmology and low-energy physics. An usual way to generate a thick braneworld model relies in coupling a bulk scalar field to higher dimensional warped gravity. Quite recently, a novel braneworld was generated with the aid of a tachyonic bulk scalar field, having several remarkable properties. It comprises a regular and stable solution that contains a relevant 3--brane with de Sitter induced metric, arising as an exact solution to the 5D field equations, describing the inflationary eras of our Universe. Besides, it is {\it asymptotically flat}, despite of the presence of a negative 5D cosmological constant, which is an interesting feature that contrasts with most of the known, asymptotically either dS or AdS models. Moreover, it encompasses a graviton spectrum with a single massless bound state, accounting for 4D gravity localized on the brane, separated from the continuum of Kaluza-Klein massive graviton modes by a mass gap that makes the 5D corrections to Newton's law to decay exponentially. Finally, gauge, scalar and fermion fields are also shown to be localized on this braneworld. In this work, we show that this tachyonic braneworld allows for a nontrivial solution with a vanishing 5D cosmological constant that preserves all the above mentioned remarkable properties with a less amount of parameters, constituting an important contribution to the construction of a realistic cosmological braneworld model.

Collapse threshold for a cosmological Klein Gordon field

Oscillating scalar fields are useful to model a variety of matter components in the universe. One or more scalar fields participate in the reheating process after inflation, while at much lower energies scalar fields are robust dark matter candidates. Pertaining structure formation in these models, it is well known that inhomogeneities of the Klein-Gordon field are unstable above the characteristic De Broglie wavelength. In this paper we show that such instability implies the existence of a threshold amplitude for the collapse of primordial fluctuations. We use this threshold to correctly predict the cut--off scale of the matter power spectrum in the scalar field dark matter model. Furthermore, for a Klein-Gordon field during reheating we show that this same threshold allows for abundant production of structure (oscillons but not necessarily black holes). Looking at the production of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) in this scenario we note that the sphericity condition yields a much lower probability of PBH formation at the end of inflation. Remarkably, even after meeting such stringent condition, we find that PBHs may be overproduced during reheating. We finally constrain the epochs at which an oscillating Klein-Gordon field could dominate the early universe.

Tachyon inflation in the Large-$N$ formalism

We study tachyon inflation within the large-$N$ formalism, which takes a prescription for the small Hubble flow slow--roll parameter $ε_1$ as a function of the large number of $e$-folds $N$. This leads to a classification of models through their behaviour at large $N$. In addition to the perturbative $N$ class, we introduce the polynomial and exponential classes for the $ε_1$ parameter. With this formalism we reconstruct a large number of potentials used previously in the literature for Tachyon Inflation. We also obtain new families of potentials form the polynomial class. We characterize the realizations of Tachyon Inflation by computing the usual cosmological observables up to second order in the Hubble flow slow--roll parameters. This allows us to look at observable differences between tachyon and canonical single field inflation. The analysis of observables in light of the Planck 2015 data shows the viability of some of these models, mostly for certain realization of the polynomial and exponential classes.

Universal spin-1/2 fermion field localization on a 5D braneworld

In this letter we have proposed a natural way of determine the Yukawa coupling $F(z)\barΨΨ$ for the 5D bulk action, the form of the $F(z)$ function allows us to localize the spin--$\frac{1}{2}$ fermionic fields in the paradigm of the 5D braneworld scenarios. The structure acquired by the $V_{L,R}$ potentials is induced by the ansatz for the $F(z)$ function and we show that this choice allows the localization of the left-- or right--chiral KK zero modes $L_{0}(z)$, $R_{0}(z)$ and excludes the tachyonic modes of the KK mass spectrum $m_{L_{n}}$ and $m_{R_{n}}$. The proposal for the function $F(z)$ leaves behind other speculative proposals since it is independent of the braneworld model, hence the form for the Yukawa coupling here presented is the most natural choice. This is shown most evidently if we set $M=\pm 3/2$, which is a more phenomenologically viable ansatz. This choice allows for a direct relation between the localization of the ground state for the left-- or right--chiral KK mass spectrum and the localization of the zero mode for the 4D graviton in the brane. As a bonus, we include a brief discussion about the existence of a left-- or right--chiral KK zero mode decoupled from the corresponding continuous KK mass spectrum, as well as the possible existence of a mass gap, due to the asymptotic nature of the potentials $V_{R,L}$.

Mass hierarchy, mass gap and corrections to Newton's law on thick branes with Poincare symmetry

We consider a scalar thick brane configuration arising in a 5D theory of gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field in a Riemannian manifold. We start from known classical solutions of the corresponding field equations and elaborate on the physics of the transverse traceless modes of linear fluctuations of the classical background, which obey a Schroedinger-like equation. We further consider two special cases in which this equation can be solved analytically for any massive mode with m^2>0, in contrast with numerical approaches, allowing us to study in closed form the massive spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations and to compute the corrections to Newton's law in the thin brane limit. In the first case we consider a solution with a mass gap in the spectrum of KK fluctuations with two bound states - the massless 4D graviton free of tachyonic instabilities and a massive KK excitation - as well as a tower of continuous massive KK modes which obey a Legendre equation. The mass gap is defined by the inverse of the brane thickness, allowing us to get rid of the potentially dangerous multiplicity of arbitrarily light KK modes. It is shown that due to this lucky circumstance, the solution of the mass hierarchy problem is much simpler and transparent than in the (thin) Randall-Sundrum (RS) two-brane configuration. In the second case we present a smooth version of the RS model with a single massless bound state, which accounts for the 4D graviton, and a sector of continuous fluctuation modes with no mass gap, which obey a confluent Heun equation in the Ince limit. (The latter seems to have physical applications for the first time within braneworld models). For this solution the mass hierarchy problem is solved as in the Lykken-Randall model and the model is completely free of naked singularities.

Nonlinear hidden symmetries in General Relativity and String Theory: a matrix generalization of the Ernst potentials

In this paper we recall a simple formulation of the stationary electrovacuum theory in terms of the famous complex Ernst potentials, a pair of functions which allows one to generate new exact solutions from known ones by means of the so-called nonlinear hidden symmetries of Lie-Backlund type. This formalism turned out to be very useful to perform a complete classification of all 4D solutions which present two spacetime symmetries or possess two Killing vectors. Curiously enough, the Ernst formalism can be extended and applied to stationary General Relativity as well as the effective heterotic string theory reduced down to three spatial dimensions by means of a (real) matrix generalization of the Ernst potentials. Thus, in this theory one can also make use of nonlinear matrix hidden symmetries in order to generate new exact solutions from seed ones. Due to the explicit independence of the matrix Ernst potential formalism of the original theory (prior to dimensional reduction) on the dimension D, in the case when the theory initially has D>=5, one can generate new solutions like charged black holes, black rings and black Saturns, among others, starting from uncharged field configurations.

Localizing gravity on thick branes: a solution for massive KK modes of the Schroedinger equation

We generate scalar thick brane configurations in a 5D Riemannian space time which describes gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field. We also show that 4D gravity can be localized on a thick brane which does not necessarily respect Z_2-symmetry, generalizing several previous models based on the Randall-Sundrum system and avoiding the restriction to orbifold geometries as well as the introduction of the branes in the action by hand. We begin by obtaining a smooth brane configuration that preserves 4D Poincar'e invariance and violates reflection symmetry along the fifth dimension. The extra dimension can have either compact or extended topology, depending on the values of the parameters of the solution. In the non-compact case, our field configuration represents a thick brane with positive energy density centered at y=c_2, whereas in the compact case we get pairs of thick branes. We recast as well the wave equations of the transverse traceless modes of the linear fluctuations of the classical solution into a Schroedinger's equation form with a volcano potential of finite bottom. We solve Schroedinger equation for the massless zero mode m^2=0 and obtain a single bound wave function which represents a stable 4D graviton and is free of tachyonic modes with m^2<0. We also get a continuum spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) states with m^2>0 that are suppressed at y=c_2 and turn asymptotically into plane waves. We found a particular case in which the Schroedinger equation can be solved for all m^2>0, giving us the opportunity of studying analytically the massive modes of the spectrum of KK excitations, a rare fact when considering thick brane configurations.

Localization of 4D gravity on pure geometrical Thick branes

We consider the generation of thick brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time which constitutes a non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory. In this framework, we show how 4D gravity can be localized on a scalar thick brane which does not necessarily respect reflection symmetry, generalizing in this way several previous models based on the Randall-Sundrum (RS) system and avoiding both, the restriction to orbifold geometries and the introduction of the branes in the action by hand. We first obtain a thick brane solution that preserves 4D Poincar'e invariance and breaks Z_2-symmetry along the extra dimension which, indeed, can be either compact or extended, and supplements brane solutions previously found by other authors. In the non-compact case, this field configuration represents a thick brane with positive energy density centered at y=c_2, whereas pairs of thick branes arise in the compact case. Remarkably, the Weylian scalar curvature is non-singular along the fifth dimension in the non-compact case, in contraposition to the RS thin brane system. We also recast the wave equations of the transverse traceless modes of the linear fluctuations of the classical background into a Schr"odinger's equation form with a volcano potential of finite bottom in both the compact and the extended cases. We solve Schr"odinger equation for the massless zero mode m^2=0 and obtain a single bound wave function which represents a stable 4D graviton. We also get a continuum gapless spectrum of KK states with m^2>0 that are suppressed at y=c_2 and turn asymptotically into plane waves.

4D gravity localized in non Z_2-symmetric thick branes

We present a comparative analysis of localization of 4D gravity on a non Z_2-symmetric scalar thick brane in both a 5-dimensional Riemannian space time and a pure geometric Weyl integrable manifold. This work was mainly motivated by the hypothesis which claims that Weyl geometries mimic quantum behaviour classically. We start by obtaining a classical 4-dimensional Poincare invariant thick brane solution which does not respect Z_2-symmetry along the (non-)compact extra dimension. The scalar energy density of our field configuration represents several series of thick branes with positive and negative energy densities centered at y_0. The only qualitative difference we have encountered when comparing both frames is that the scalar curvature of the Riemannian manifold turns out to be singular for the found solution, whereas its Weylian counterpart presents a regular behaviour. By studying the transverse traceless modes of the fluctuations of the classical backgrounds, we recast their equations into a Schroedinger's equation form with a volcano potential of finite bottom (in both frames). By solving the Schroedinger equation for the massless zero mode m^2=0 we obtain a single bound state which represents a stable 4-dimensional graviton in both frames. We also get a continuum gapless spectrum of KK states with positive m^2>0 that are suppressed at y_0, turning into continuum plane wave modes as "y" approaches spatial infinity. We show that for the considered solution to our setup, the potential is always bounded and cannot adopt the form of a well with infinite walls; thus, we do not get a discrete spectrum of KK states, and we conclude that the claim that Weylian structures mimic, classically, quantum behaviour does not constitute a generic feature of these geometric manifolds.

O(d+1,d+n+1)--invariant Formulation of Stationary Heterotic String Theory

We present a pair of symmetric formulations of the matter sector of the stationary effective action of heterotic string theory that arises after the toroidal compactification of d dimensions. The first formulation is written in terms of a pair of matrix potentials Z_1 and Z_2 which exhibits a clear symmetry between them and can be used to generate new families of solutions on the basis of either Z_1 or Z_2; the second one is an O(d+1,d+n+1)-invariant formulation which is written in terms of a matrix vector W endowed with an O(d+1,d+n+1)-invariant scalar product which linearizes the action of the O(d+1,d+n+1) symmetry group on the coset space O(d+1,d+n+1)/[O(d+1)XO(d+n+1)]; this fact opens as well a simple solution--generating technique which can be applied on the basis of known solutions. A special class of extremal solutions is indicated by asuming a simple ansatz for the matrix vector W that reduces the equation of motion to the Laplace equation for a real scalar function.
