Energy Efficiency Analysis of Collaborative Compressive Sensing Scheme in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficiency of conventional collaborative compressive sensing (CCCS) scheme, focusing on balancing the tradeoff between energy efficiency and detection accuracy in cognitive radio environment. In particular, we derive the achievable throughput, energy consumption and energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme, and formulate an optimization problem to determine the optimal values of parameters which maximize the energy efficiency of the CCCS scheme. The maximization of energy efficiency is proposed as a multi-variable, non-convex optimization problem, and we provide approximations to reduce it to a convex optimization problem. We highlight that errors due to these approximations are negligible. Later, we analytically characterize the tradeoff between dimensionality reduction and collaborative sensing performance of the CCCS scheme -- the implicit tradeoff between energy saving and detection accuracy, and show that the loss due to compression can be recovered through collaboration which improves the overall energy efficiency.

Opportunistic Ambient Backscatter Communication in RF-Powered Cognitive Radio Networks

In the present contribution, we propose a novel opportunistic ambient backscatter communication (ABC) framework for radio frequency (RF)-powered cognitive radio (CR) networks. This framework considers opportunistic spectrum sensing integrated with ABC and harvest-then-transmit (HTT) operation strategies. Novel analytic expressions are derived for the average throughput, the average energy consumption and the energy efficiency in the considered set up. These expressions are represented in closed-form and have a tractable algebraic representation which renders them convenient to handle both analytically and numerically. In addition, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of the CR system operating in mixed ABC $-$ and HTT $-$ modes, for a given set of constraints including primary interference and imperfect spectrum sensing constraints. Capitalizing on this, we determine the optimal set of parameters which in turn comprise the optimal detection threshold, the optimal degree of trade-off between the CR system operating in the ABC $-$ and HTT $-$ modes and the optimal data transmission time. Extensive results from respective computer simulations are also presented for corroborating the corresponding analytic results and to demonstrate the performance gain of the proposed model in terms of energy efficiency.

Sensing-Throughput Tradeoff for Superior Selective Reporting-based Spectrum Sensing in Energy Harvesting HCRNs

In this paper, we investigate the performance of conventional cooperative sensing (CCS) and superior selective reporting (SSR)-based cooperative sensing in an energy harvesting-enabled heterogeneous cognitive radio network (HCRN). In particular, we derive expressions for the achievable throughput of both schemes and formulate nonlinear integer programming problems, in order to find the throughput-optimal set of spectrum sensors scheduled to sense a particular channel, given primary user (PU) interference and energy harvesting constraints. Furthermore, we present novel solutions for the underlying optimization problems based on the cross-entropy (CE) method, and compare the performance with exhaustive search and greedy algorithms. Finally, we discuss the tradeoff between the average achievable throughput of the SSR and CCS schemes, and highlight the regime where the SSR scheme outperforms the CCS scheme. Notably, we show that there is an inherent tradeoff between the channel available time and the detection accuracy. Our numerical results show that, as the number of spectrum sensors increases, the channel available time gains a higher priority in an HCRN, as opposed to detection accuracy.

Hybrid Powerline/Wireless Diversity for Smart Grid Communications: Design Challenges and Real-time Implementation

The demand for energy is growing at an unprecedented pace that is much higher than the energy generation capacity growth rate using both conventional and green technologies. In particular, the electric power sector is consistently rated among the most dynamic growth markets over all other energy markets. Distributed (decentralized) energy generation based on renewable energy sources is an efficient and reliable solution to serve such huge energy demand growth [1]. However, to manage dynamic and complex distributed systems, a massive amount of data has to be measured, collected, exchanged and processed in real time. Smart grids manage an intelligent energy delivery network enabled two-way communications between data concentrators operated by utility companies and smart meters installed at the end users. In particular, dynamic power-grid loading and peak load management are the two main driving forces for bidirectional communications over the grid. Narrowband power line communications (NB-PLC) and wireless communications in the unlicensed frequency band (sub-1 GHz or 2.4 GHz) are the two main communications systems adopted to support the growing smart grid applications. Moreover, since NB-PLC and unlicensed wireless links experience channel and interference with markedly different statistics, transmitting the same information signal concurrently over both links significantly enhances the smart grid communications reliability. In this article, we compare various diversity combining schemes for simultaneous power line and wireless transmissions. Furthermore, we developed a real-time testbed for the hybrid PLC/wireless system to demonstrate the performance enhancement achieved by PLC/wireless diversity combining over a single link performance.

Robust Resource Allocation for MISO Cognitive Radio Networks Under Two Practical Non-Linear Energy Harvesting Models

To achieve a good tradeoff between the consumed power and the harvested power, a robust resource optimization problem is studied in a multiple-input single-output cognitive radio network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer under imperfect channel state information. Unlike most of the existing works that assume an ideal linear energy harvesting (EH) model, we assume two practical non-linear EH models. In order to solve the resulting challenging non-convex problem, we propose an algorithm based on successive convex approximation and prove that a rank-one solution is obtained in each iteration of the proposed algorithm. Our simulation results quantify the effect of the sensitivity threshold of the EH circuit on the harvested power.

Enhancing PHY Security of MISO NOMA SWIPT Systems With a Practical Non-Linear EH Model

Non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) are promising techniques to improve spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. However, the security of NOMA SWIPT systems has not received much attention in the literature. In this paper, an artificial noise-aided beamforming design problem is studied to enhance the security of a multiple-input single-output NOMA SWIPT system where a practical non-linear energy harvesting model is adopted. The problem is non-convex and challenging to solve. Two algorithms are proposed to tackle this problem based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation. Simulation results show that a performance gain can be obtained by using NOMA compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access. It is also shown that the performance of the algorithm using a cost function is better than the algorithm using SDR at the cost of a higher computation complexity.

On the Secrecy Capacity of Fisher-Snedecor F Fading Channels

The performance of physical-layer security of the classic Wyner's wiretap model over Fisher-Snedecor F composite fading channels is considered in this work. Specifically, the main channel (i.e., between the source and the legitimate destination) and the eavesdropper's channel (i.e., between the source and the illegitimate destination) are assumed to experience independent quasi-static Fisher-Snedecor F fading conditions, which have been shown to be encountered in realistic wireless transmission scenarios in conventional and emerging communication systems. In this context, exact closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC) and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNSC) are derived. Additionally, an asymptotic analytical expression for the ASC is also presented. The impact of shadowing and multipath fading on the secrecy performance is investigated. Our results show that increasing the fading parameter of the main channel and or the shadowing parameter of the eavesdropper's channel improves the secrecy performance. The analytical results are compared with Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the analysis.

Security-Enhanced SC-FDMA Transmissions Using Temporal Artificial-Noise and Secret-Key Aided Schemes

We investigate the physical layer security of uplink single-carrier frequency-division multiple-access (SC-FDMA) systems. Multiple users, Alices, send confidential messages to a common legitimate base-station, Bob, in the presence of an eavesdropper, Eve. To secure the legitimate transmissions, each user superimposes an artificial noise (AN) signal on the time-domain SC-FDMA data block. We reduce the computational and storage requirements at Bob's receiver by assuming simple per-subchannel detectors. We assume that Eve has global channel knowledge of all links in addition to high computational capabilities, where she adopts high-complexity detectors such as single-user maximum likelihood (ML), multiuser minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE), and multiuser ML. We analyze the correlation properties of the time-domain AN signal and illustrate how Eve can exploit them to reduce the AN effects. We prove that the number of useful AN streams that can degrade Eve's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is dependent on the channel memories of Alices-Bob and Alices-Eve links. Furthermore, we enhance the system security for the case of partial Alices-Bob channel knowledge at Eve, where Eve only knows the precoding matrices of the data and AN signals instead of knowing the entire Alices-Bob channel matrices, and propose a hybrid scheme that integrates temporal AN with channel-based secret-key extraction.

Securing Untrusted Full-Duplex Relay Channels in the Presence of Multiple External Cluster-Based Eavesdroppers

This letter investigates the physical layer security in a wireless cooperative network where communication is assisted by a full-duplex (FD) untrusted relay in the presence of multiple external eavesdroppers. A cluster-based colluding eavesdropping setting is considered, where illegitimate nodes with common interests are grouped in a cluster. In order to confuse the different eavesdropping clusters, we consider artificial-noise-aided beamforming at the source node. Moreover, FD relay jamming is adopted to improve the system's security. To maintain secure communications against the untrusted relay node, a FD destination jamming scheme is adopted. Our proposed scheme is designed based on the channel state information of the legitimate nodes only. Numerical results show that the optimal power allocation factor between data and artificial noise depends on the total number of antennas of the different colluding eavesdropping clusters.

A Hybrid Artificial-Noise and Secret-Key Scheme for Securing OFDM Transmissions in V2G Networks

We propose a new scheme to enhance the physical-layer security of wireless single-input single-output orthogonal-frequency division-multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions from an electric vehicle, Alice, to the aggregator, Bob, in the presence of an eavesdropper, Eve. To prevent information leakage to Eve, Alice exploits the wireless channel randomness to extract secret key symbols that are used to encrypt some data symbols which are then multiplexed in the frequency domain with the remaining unencrypted data symbols. To secure the unencrypted data symbols, Alice transmits an artificial-noise (AN) signal superimposed over her data signal. We propose a three-level optimization procedure to increase the average secrecy rate of this wiretap channel by optimizing the transmit power allocation between the encrypted data symbols, unencrypted data symbols and the AN symbols. Our numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves considerable secrecy rate gains compared to the benchmark cases

Securing OFDM-Based Wireless Links Using Temporal Artificial-Noise Injection

We investigate the physical layer security of wireless single-input single-output orthogonal-division multiplexing (OFDM) when a transmitter, which we refer to as Alice, sends her information to a receiver, which we refer to as Bob, in the presence of an eavesdropping node, Eve. To prevent information leakage, Alice sends an artificial-noise (AN) signal superimposed over her information signal. We investigate the impact of the channel delay spread, OFDM cyclic prefix, information/AN power allocation, and information and AN precoders design on the achievable average secrecy rate. We consider the two cases of known and unknown channel state information (CSI) at Alice. Furthermore, we compare both cases of per-sub-channel processing and joint sub-channels processing at Eve's receiver. Our numerical results show the gain of AN injection in terms of average secrecy rate for different OFDM operating conditions. Moreover, based on our new insights, we demonstrate that the AN-aided scheme is effective and achieves almost the same average secrecy rate as the full-CSI case without the need for Eve's instantaneous CSI at Alice.

Secure Beamforming in Full-Duplex SWIPT Systems With Loopback Self-Interference Cancellation

Security is a critical issue in full duplex (FD) communication systems due to the broadcast nature of wireless channels. In this paper, joint design of information and artificial noise beamforming vectors is proposed for the FD simultaneous wireless information and power transferring (FD-SWIPT) systems with loopback self-interference cancellation. To guarantee high security and energy harvesting performance of the FD-SWIPT system, the proposed design is formulated as a secrecy rate maximization problem under energy transfer rate constraints. Although the secrecy rate maximization problem is non-convex, we solve it via semidefinite relaxation and a two-dimensional search. We prove the optimality of our proposed algorithm and demonstrate its performance via simulations.

On the Monetary Loss Due to Passive and Active Attacks on MIMO Smart Grid Communications

We consider multiple source nodes (consumers) communicating wirelessly their energy demands to the meter data-management system (MDMS) over the subarea gateway(s). We quantify the impacts of passive and active security attacks on the wireless communications system's reliability and security as well as the energy-demand estimation-error cost in dollars paid by the utility. We adopt a multiple-input multiple-output multi-antenna-eavesdropper (MIMOME) wiretap channel model. To secure the MIMO wireless communication system, the legitimate nodes generate artificial noise (AN) vectors to mitigate the effect of the passive eavesdropping attacks. In addition, we propose a redundant design where multiple gateways are assumed to coexist in each subarea to forward the consumers' energy-demand messages. We quantify the redundant designs impact on the communication reliability between the consumers and the MDMS and on the energy-demand estimation-error cost.

An Artificial-Noise-Aided Secure Scheme for Hybrid Parallel PLC/Wireless OFDM Systems

We investigate the physical-layer security of indoor hybrid parallel power-line/wireless orthogonal-frequency division-multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. We propose an artificial-noise (AN) aided scheme to enhance the system's security in the presence of an eavesdropper by exploiting the decoupled nature of the power-line and wireless communication media. The proposed scheme does not require the instantaneous channel state information of the eavesdropper's links to be known at the legitimate nodes. In our proposed scheme, the legitimate transmitter (Alice) and the legitimate receiver (Bob) cooperate to secure the hybrid system where an AN signal is shared from Bob to Alice on the link with the lower channel-to-noise ratio (CNR) while the information stream in addition to a noisy-amplified version of the received AN signal is transmitted from Alice to Bob on the link with higher CNR at each OFDM sub-channel. In addition, we investigate the effect of the transmit power levels at both Alice and Bob and the power allocation ratio between the data and AN signals at Alice on the secure throughput. We investigate both single-link eavesdropping attacks, where only one link is exposed to eavesdropping attacks, and two-link eavesdropping attacks, where the two links are exposed to eavesdropping attacks.

Secure Beamforming in Full-Duplex SWIPT Systems

Physical layer security is a key issue in the full duplex (FD) communication systems due to the broadcast nature of wireless channels. In this paper, the joint design of information and artificial noise beamforming vectors is proposed for the FD simultaneous wireless information and power transferring (FD-SWIPT) systems. To guarantee high security and energy harvesting performance of the FD-SWIPT system, the proposed design is formulated as a sum information transmission rate (SITR) maximization problem under information-leakage and energy constraints. In addition, we consider the fairness issue between the uplink and downlink information transmission rates by formulating a \mbox{fairness-aware} SITR-maximization problem. Although the formulated \mbox{SITR-maximization} and \mbox{fairness-aware} \mbox{SITR-maximization} problems are non-convex, we solve them via semidefinite relaxation and one-dimensional search. The optimality of our proposed algorithms is theoretically proved, and the computation complexities are established. Moreover, we propose two suboptimal solutions to the formulated optimization problems. In terms of the SITR-maximization problem, numerical results show that the performance achieved by one of the two suboptimal algorithms is close to the performance of the optimal algorithm with increasing maximum transmission power of the FD-BST.

Sparsity-Aware Joint Frame Synchronization and Channel Estimation: Algorithm and USRP Implementation

Conventional correlation-based frame synchronization techniques can suffer significant performance degradation over multi-path frequency-selective channels. As a remedy, in this paper we consider joint frame synchronization and channel estimation. This, however, increases the length of the resulting combined channel and its estimation becomes more challenging. On the other hand, since the combined channel is a sparse vector, sparse channel estimation methods can be applied. We propose a joint frame synchronization and channel estimation method using the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm which exploits the sparsity of the combined channel vector. Subsequently, the channel estimate is used to design the equalizer. Our simulation results and experimental outcomes using software defined radios show that the proposed approach improves the overall system performance in terms of the mean square error (MSE) between the transmitted and the equalized symbols compared to the conventional method.

Performance Analysis of Coherent and Noncoherent Modulation under I/Q Imbalance

In-phase/quadrature-phase Imbalance (IQI) is considered a major performance-limiting impairment in direct-conversion transceivers. Its effects become even more pronounced at higher carrier frequencies such as the millimeter-wave frequency bands being considered for 5G systems. In this paper, we quantify the effects of IQI on the performance of different modulation schemes under multipath fading channels. This is realized by developing a general framework for the symbol error rate (SER) analysis of coherent phase shift keying, noncoherent differential phase shift keying and noncoherent frequency shift keying under IQI effects. In this context, the moment generating function of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio is first derived for both single-carrier and multi-carrier systems suffering from transmitter (TX) IQI only, receiver (RX) IQI only and joint TX/RX IQI. Capitalizing on this, we derive analytic expressions for the SER of the different modulation schemes. These expressions are corroborated by comparisons with corresponding results from computer simulations and they provide insights into the dependence of IQI on the system parameters. We demonstrate that the effects of IQI differ considerably depending on the considered system as some cases of single-carrier transmission appear robust to IQI, whereas multi-carrier systems experiencing IQI at the RX require compensation in order to achieve a reliable communication link.

Achievable Rates of Buffer-Aided Full-Duplex Gaussian Relay Channels

We derive closed-form expressions for the achievable rates of a buffer-aided full-duplex (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian relay channel. The FD relay still suffers from residual self-interference (RSI) after the application of self-interference mitigation techniques. We investigate both cases of a slow-RSI channel where the RSI is fixed over the entire codeword, and a fast-RSI channel where the RSI changes from one symbol duration to another within the codeword. We show that the RSI can be completely eliminated in the slow-RSI case when the FD relay is equipped with a buffer while the fast RSI cannot be eliminated. For the fixed-rate data transmission scenario, we derive the optimal transmission strategy that should be adopted by the source node and relay node to maximize the system throughput. We verify our analytical findings through simulations.
