Coherent-Incoherent Crossover of Charge and Neutral Mode Transport as Evidence for the Disorder-Dominated Fractional Edge Phase

Couplings between topological edge channels open electronic phases possessing nontrivial eigenmodes far beyond the noninteracting-edge picture. However, inelastic scatterings mask the eigenmodes' inherent features, often preventing us from identifying the phases, as is the case for the quintessential Landau-level filling factor v = 2/3 edge composed of the counter-propagating v = 1/3 and 1 (1/3-1) channels. Here, we study the coherent-incoherent crossover of the 1/3-1 channels by tuning the channel length in-situ using a new device architecture comprising a junction of v = 1/3 and 1 systems, the particle-hole conjugate of the 2/3 edge. We successfully observed the concurrence of the fluctuating electrical conductance and the quantized thermal conductance in the crossover regime, the definitive hallmark of the eigenmodes in the disorder-dominated edge phase left experimentally unverified.

Dynamics of the fractional quantum Hall edge probed by stroboscope measurements of trions

By using observations from pump-probe stroboscopic confocal microscopy and spectroscopy, we demonstrate the dynamics of trions and the fractional quantum Hall edge on the order of $\sim1$ ps. The propagation of the quantum Hall edge state excited by a voltage pulse is detected as a temporal change in reflectance in the downstream edge probed by optical pulses synchronized with the voltage pulse. The temporal resolution of such stroboscopic pump-probe measurements is as fast as the duration time of the probe pulse ($\sim1$ ps). This ultra-fast stroboscope measurement enables us to distinguish between the normal mode of edge excitation, known as the edge magneto-plasmon or charge density wave, and other high-energy non-linear excitations. This is the only experimental method available to study the ultra-fast dynamics of quantum Hall edges, and makes it possible to derive the metric tensor $g_{μν}$ of the $(1+1)=2$-dimensional curved spacetime in quantum universe and black hole analogs implemented in the quantum Hall edge.

Classical simulation and theory of quantum annealing in a thermal environment

We study quantum annealing in the quantum Ising model coupled to a thermal environment. When the speed of quantum annealing is sufficiently slow, the system evolves following the instantaneous thermal equilibrium. This quasistatic and isothermal evolution, however, fails near the end of annealing because the relaxation time grows infinitely, therefore yielding excess energy from the thermal equilibrium. We develop a phenomenological theory based on this picture and derive a scaling relation of the excess energy after annealing. The theoretical results are numerically confirmed using a novel non-Markovian method that we recently proposed based on a path-integral representation of the reduced density matrix and the infinite time evolving block decimation. In addition, we discuss crossovers from weak to strong coupling as well as from the adiabatic to quasistatic regime, and propose experiments on the D-Wave quantum annealer.

Even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state in conventional triple-gated quantum point contact

The even-denominator states have attracted considerable attention owing to their possible applications in future quantum technologies. In this letter, we first report a 3/2 diagonal resistance, indicating the existence of a 3/2 state in a nanometer-sized triple-gated quantum point contact (QPC) fabricated on a high-mobility (not ultra-high-mobility) single-layer two-dimensional (2D) GaAs wafer. The center gate plays a crucial role in realizing the QPC's 3/2 state. Our observation of the 3/2 state using a conventional QPC device, which is a suitable building block for semiconductor quantum devices, paves a new path for the development of semiconductor-based quantum technologies.

Real-time and -space visualization of excitations of the ν= 1/3 fractional quantum Hall edge

We present scanning optical stroboscopic confocal microscopy and spectroscopy measurements wherein three degrees of freedom, namely energy, real-space, and real-time, are resolvable. The edge-state propagation is detected as a temporal change in the optical response in the downstream edge. We succeeded in visualizing the excited states of the most fundamental fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state and the collective excitations near the edge. The results verify the current understanding of the edge excitation and also point toward further dynamics outside the edge channel.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional $t$-$J_s$-$J_τ$ model at quarter filling

We study the ground state of the one-dimensional "$t$-$J_s$-$J_τ$ model," which is a variant of the $t$-$J$ model with additional channel degree of freedom. The model is not only a generalization of the $t$-$J$ model but also an effective model of the two-channel Kondo lattice model in the strong-coupling region. The low-energy excitations and correlation functions are systematically calculated by the density matrix renormalization group method, and the ground-state phase diagram at quarter filling consisting of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, spin-gap state, channel-gap state, insulator, and phase separation is determined. We find that weak channel fluctuations stabilize the spin-gap state, while strong channel fluctuations lead to the transition to the insulator.

Density matrix renormalization group study of the $ν=1/3$ edge states in fractional quantum Hall systems

The edge states in the fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $ν=1/3$ are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is shown that the density oscillation induced by the local boundary condition at the edge is characterized by the wave number of the minimum magnetoroton excitation, and this structure is partially reconstructed with the change in the confinement potential shape. In particular, the $ν=1$ counterpropagating edge channel appears with the change in the chemical potential, which is consistent with recent experiments on heat transport. The stability of the bulk states against the change in the number of electrons confirms that the bulk part of the fractional quantum Hall state is incompressible, while the edge state is compressible.

Probing the Universality of Topological Defect Formation in a Quantum Annealer: Kibble-Zurek Mechanism and Beyond

The number of topological defects created in a system driven through a quantum phase transition exhibits a power-law scaling with the driving time. This universal scaling law is the key prediction of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), and testing it using a hardware-based quantum simulator is a coveted goal of quantum information science. Here we provide such a test using quantum annealing. Specifically, we report on extensive experimental tests of topological defect formation via the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model on two different D-Wave quantum annealing devices. We find that the quantum simulator results can indeed be explained by the KZM for open-system quantum dynamics with phase-flip errors, with certain quantitative deviations from the theory likely caused by factors such as random control errors and transient effects. In addition, we probe physics beyond the KZM by identifying signatures of universality in the distribution and cumulants of the number of kinks and their decay, and again find agreement with the quantum simulator results. This implies that the theoretical predictions of the generalized KZM theory, which assumes isolation from the environment, applies beyond its original scope to an open system. We support this result by extensive numerical computations. To check whether an alternative, classical interpretation of these results is possible, we used the spin-vector Monte Carlo model, a candidate classical description of the D-Wave device. We find that the degree of agreement with the experimental data from the D-Wave annealing devices is better for the KZM, a quantum theory, than for the classical spin-vector Monte Carlo model, thus favoring a quantum description of the device. Our work provides an experimental test of quantum critical dynamics in an open quantum system, and paves the way to new directions in quantum simulation experiments.

Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a Dissipative Transverse Ising Chain

We study the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in the transverse Ising chain coupled to a dissipative boson bath, making use of a new numerical method with the infinite time evolving block decimation combined with the discrete-time path integral. We first show the ground-state phase diagram and confirm that a quantum phase transition takes place in the presence of the system-bath coupling. Then we present the time dependence of the energy expectation value of the spin Hamiltonian and the scaling of the kink density with respect to the time period over which the spin Hamiltonian crosses a quantum phase transition. The energy of spins starts to grow from the energy at the ground state of the full system near a quantum phase transition. The kink density decays as a power law with respect to the time period. These results confirm that the Kibble-Zurek mechanism happens. We discuss the exponent for the decay of the kink density in comparison with a theoretical result with the quantum Monte-Carlo simulation. A comparison to an experimental study is also briefly mentioned.

Quantum annealing of pure and random Ising chains coupled to a bosonic environment

We study quantum annealing of pure and random transverse Ising chains that are coupled to boson baths, using a novel numerical method based on the combination of the quasi-adiabatic propagation path integral (QUAPI) and the matrix product state (MPS) formalisms. We present numerical results on systems up to 64 spins and conclude that the baths disturb quantum annealing of pure and random Ising chains. The numerical method to compute the reduced density matrix is described in detail.

Spontaneous Transition to a Correlated Phase of Skyrmions Observed in Real Space

We conduct photoluminescence microscopy that is sensitive to both electron and nuclear spin polarization to investigate the changes that occur in the magnetic ordering in the vicinity of the first integer quantum Hall state in a GaAs 2D electron system (2DES). We observe a discontinuity in the electron spin polarization and nuclear spin longitudinal relaxation time which heralds a spontaneous transition to a phase of magnetic skyrmions. We image in real space the spin phase domains that coexist at this transition, and observe hysteresis in their formation as a function of the 2DES's chemical potential. Based on measurements in a tilted magnetic field orientation, we found that the transition is protected by an energy gap containing the Zeeman energy, and conclude that the skyrmions here have formed as an ensemble.

Thermodynamic properties of the $S=1/2$ twisted triangular spin tube

Thermodynamic properties of the twisted three-leg spin tube under magnetic field are studied by the finite-$T$ density-matrix renormalization group method. The specific heat, spin, and chiral susceptibilities of the infinite system are calculated for both the original and its low-energy effective models. The obtained results show that the presence of the chirality is observed as a clear peak in the specific heat at low temperature and the contribution of the chirality dominates the low-temperature part of the specific heat as the exchange coupling along the spin tube decreases. The peak structures in the specific heat, spin, and chiral susceptibilities are strongly modified near the quantum phase transition where the critical behaviors of the spin and chirality correlations change. These results confirm that the chirality plays a major role in characteristic low-energy behaviors of the frustrated spin systems.

Fractional quantum Hall effects in graphene on a h-BN substrate

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effects in graphene are studied because of their relativistic characteristics and the valley degree of freedom. Recently FQH effects have been observed at various filling factors with graphene on a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate. However, it is known that h-BN creates the mass term in the Dirac Hamiltonian that acts as the effective model of graphene. To understand recent experiments, we shall investigate many-body effects in the massive Dirac electron system. In this paper, we study the mass-term effects on the FQH states of Dirac electrons by exact diagonalization. We examine the ground state at filling factor 1/3 in the $n=\pm 1$ Landau level. Without the mass term, the ground state in the Laughlin state featuring valley degeneracy and the lowest excitation is characterized by the valley unpolarized state (known as the valley skyrmion state). Conversely, we find that the mass-term lifts the valley degeneracy due to the breaking of the inversion symmetry. We also demonstrate that the valley unpolarized excitation is suppressed and that the fully or partially polarized state appears in the lowest excitation by increasing the mass term. Finally, we discuss the stability of FQH states in the massive Dirac Hamiltonian in experimental situations. We find that our numerical results are in agreement with previous experimental results.

Transmission and reflection of charge density waves in a quantum Hall edge controlled by a metal gate

Quantum energy teleportation (QET) is a proposed protocol related to the quantum vacuum. The edge channels in a quantum Hall system is well suited for the experimental verification of QET. For this purpose, we examine a charge density wave excited and detected by capacitively coupled front gate electrodes. We observe the waveform of the charge density wave, which is proportional to the time derivative of the applied square voltage wave. Further, we study the transmission and reflection behaviors of the charge density wave by applying a voltage to another front gate electrode to control the path of the edge state. We show that the threshold voltages where the dominant direction is switched in either transmission or reflection for dense and sparse waves are different from the threshold voltage where the current stops flowing in an equilibrium state.

Multiple Magnetization Plateaus and the Magnetic Structures in $S=1/2$ Heisenberg Model on the Checkerboard Lattice

We study the ground state of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice in a magnetic field by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method with the sine-square deformation. We obtain magnetization plateaus at $M/M_{\rm sat}=$0, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 where $M_{\rm sat}$ is the saturated magnetization. The obtained 3/4 plateau state is consistent with the exact result, and the 1/2 plateau is found to have a four-spin resonating loop structure similar to the six-spin loop structure of the 1/3 plateau of the kagome lattice. Different four-spin loop structures are obtained in the 1/4 and 3/8 plateaus but no corresponding states exist in the kagome lattice. The 3/8 plateau has a unique magnetic structure of three types of four-spin local quantum states in a $4\sqrt{2}\times2\sqrt{2}$ magnetic unit cell with a 16-fold degeneracy.

Formulation of the Relativistic Quantum Hall Effect and "Parity Anomaly"

We present a relativistic formulation of the quantum Hall effect on Haldane sphere. An explicit form of the pseudopotential is derived for the relativistic quantum Hall effect with/without mass term. We clarify particular features of the relativistic quantum Hall states with the use of the exact diagonalization study of the pseudopotential Hamiltonian. Physical effects of the mass term to the relativistic quantum Hall states are investigated in detail. The mass term acts as an interpolating parameter between the relativistic and non-relativistic quantum Hall effects. It is pointed out that the mass term unevenly affects the many-body physics of the positive and negative Landau levels as a manifestation of the "parity anomaly". In particular, we explicitly demonstrate the instability of the Laughlin state of the positive first relativistic Landau level with the reduction of the charge gap.

Field Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in $S=1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Model on the Square Lattice

We study the magnetic field dependence of the ground state of $S=1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice by the DMRG method with the sine-square deformation. We obtain 8 different phases including plaquette valence-bond crystal with a finite spin gap, transverse N$\acute{\rm e}$el, transverse stripe, 1/2 magnetization plateau with up-up-up-down (uuud), and three new phases we named Y-like, V-like, and $Ψ$ phases around $J_2/J_1$ =0.55-0.6 depending on the magnetic field. The phase transitions to uuud and Y-like states from transverse N$\acute{\rm e}$el (at $J_2/J_1$ = 0.55) and stripe (at $J_2/J_1$ = 0.6) states are discontinuous, as in the case of spin-flop.

Ground state phase diagram of twisted three-leg spin tube in magnetic field

We study the ground state phase diagram of the twisted three-leg spin tube in magnetic fields by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The twisted spin tube is composed of triangular unit cells and possesses strong quantum fluctuations under geometrical frustration. We apply the sine square deformation method to remove the strong boundary effects and obtain smooth magnetization curves without steps of finite systems. With the analysis of the magnetization curves and correlation functions we determine the ground state phase diagram consisting of (a) a Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid characterized by spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Heisenberg model, (b) 3-sublattice state named UUD with 1/3 magnetization and (c) TL-liquid of massless chirality with 1/3 magnetization plateau, (d) TL-liquid of massless spin mode with or without chirality quasi long-range order.
