Tree Approximation for Spin Glass Models

An approximate numerical approach to spin models is proposed, in which the original lattice is transformed into a tree. This method is applied to the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model in two and three dimensions. It captures the characteristics of each individual sample and reproduces various qualitative features of sample averaged quantities similar to those that have been observed in previous Monte Carlo simulations. For example, from the Binder parameter for various system sizes as a function of the temperature we obtain Tc ~ 1.0 with ν~ 1.85, in reasonable agreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations. The present approximation yields the trivial structure for the overlap distribution function.

Dimer-Quadrupolar Quantum Phase Transition in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Heisenberg Model with Biquadratic Interaction

The quasi-one-dimensional S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a biquadratic term is investigated at zero temperature by quantum Monte Carlo simulation. As the magnitude of the inter-chain coupling is increased, the system undergoes a phase transition from a spontaneously dimerized phase to a Néel ordered or spin nematic phase. The numerical results suggest the possibility of an unconventional second-order transition in which the symmetry group characterizing one phase is not a subgroup of the other.

Quantum Critical Point of the XY Model and Condensation of Field-Induced Quasiparticles in Dimer Compounds

The quantum critical point of the three-dimensional XY model in a symmetry-preserving field is investigated. The results of Monte Carlo simulations with the directed-loop algorithm show that the quantum critical behavior is characterized by the mean-field values of critical exponents. The system-size dependence of various quantities is compared to a simple field-theoretical argument that supports the mean-field scaling.

Recent Developments of World-Line Monte Carlo Methods

World-line quantum Monte Carlo methods are reviewed with an emphasis on breakthroughs made in recent years. In particular, three algorithms -- the loop algorithm, the worm algorithm, and the directed-loop algorithm -- for updating world-line configurations are presented in a unified perspective. Detailed descriptions of the algorithms in specific cases are also given.

Transition matrix Monte Carlo method for quantum systems

We propose an efficient method for Monte Carlo simulation of quantum lattice models. Unlike most other quantum Monte Carlo methods, a single run of the proposed method yields the free energy and the entropy with high precision for the whole range of temperature. The method is based on several recent findings in Monte Carlo techniques, such as the loop algorithm and the transition matrix Monte Carlo method. In particular, we derive an exact relation between the DOS and the expectation value of the transition probability for quantum systems, which turns out to be useful in reducing the statistical errors in various estimates.

A quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for softcore boson systems

An efficient Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for the simulation of bosonic systems on a lattice in a grand canonical ensemble is proposed. It is based on the mapping of bosonic models to the spin models in the limit of the infinite total spin quantum number. It is demonstrated, how this limit may be taken explicitly in the algorithm, eliminating the systematic errors. The efficiency of the algorithm is examined for the non-interacting lattice boson model and compared with the stochastic series expansion method with the heat-bath type scattering probability of the random walker.

Coarse-grained loop algorithms for Monte Carlo simulation of quantum spin systems

Recently, Syljuasen and Sandvik proposed a new framework for constructing algorithms of quantum Monte Carlo simulation. While it includes new classes of powerful algorithms, it is not straightforward to find an efficient algorithm for a given model. Based on their framework, we propose an algorithm that is a natural extension of the conventional loop algorithm with the split-spin representation. A complete table of the vertex density and the worm-scattering probability is presented for the general XXZ model of an arbitrary S with a uniform magnetic field.

Néel and Spin-Peierls ground states of two-dimensional SU(N) quantum antiferromagnets

The two-dimensional SU(N) quantum antiferromagnet, a generalization of the quantum Heisenberg model, is investigated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state for $N\le 4$ is found to be of the Néel type with broken SU(N) symmetry, whereas it is of the Spin-Peierls type for $N\ge 5$ with broken lattice translational invariance. No intermediate spin-liquid phase was observed in contrast to previous numerical simulations on smaller lattices [Santoro et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 83} 3065 (1999)].

Broad histogram relation for the bond number and its applications

We discuss Monte Carlo methods based on the cluster (graph) representation for spin models. We derive a rigorous broad histogram relation (BHR) for the bond number; a counterpart for the energy was derived by Oliveira previously. A Monte Carlo dynamics based on the number of potential moves for the bond number is proposed. We show the efficiency of the BHR for the bond number in calculating the density of states and other physical quantities.

Combination of improved multibondic method and the Wang-Landau method

We propose a method for Monte Carlo simulation of statistical physical models with discretized energy. The method is based on several ideas including the cluster algorithm, the multicanonical Monte Carlo method and its acceleration proposed recently by Wang and Landau. As in the multibondic ensemble method proposed by Janke and Kappler, the present algorithm performs a random walk in the space of the bond population to yield the state density as a function of the bond number. A test on the Ising model shows that the number of Monte Carlo sweeps required of the present method for obtaining the density of state with a given accuracy is proportional to the system size, whereas it is proportional to the system size squared for other conventional methods. In addition, the new method shows a better performance than the original Wang-Landau method in measurement of physical quantities.

Quadrupolar Order in Isotropic Heisenberg Models with Biquadratic Interaction

Through Quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we study the biquadratic-interaction model with the SU(2) symmetry in two and three dimensions. The zero-temperature phase diagrams for the two cases are identical and exhibit an intermediate phase characterized by finite quadrupole moment, in agreement with mean-field type arguments and the semi-classical theory. In three dimensions, we demonstrate that the model in the quadrupolar regime has a phase transition at a finite temperature. In contrast to predictions by mean-field theories, the phase transition to the quadrupolar phase turns out to be of the second order. We also examine the critical behavior in the two marginal cases with the SU(3) symmetry.

Universal relations in the finite-size correction terms of two-dimensional Ising models

Quite recently, Izmailian and Hu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5160 (2001)] studied the finite-size correction terms for the free energy per spin and the inverse correlation length of the critical two-dimensional Ising model. They obtained the universal amplitude ratio for the coefficients of two series. In this study we give a simple derivation of this universal relation; we do not use an explicit form of series expansion. Moreover, we show that the Izmailian and Hu's relation is reduced to a simple and exact relation between the free energy and the correlation length. This equation holds at any temperature and has the same form as the finite-size scaling.

Loop algorithm for Heisenberg models with biquadratic interaction and phase transitions in two dimensions

We present a new algorithm for quantum Monte Carlo simulation based on global updating with loops. While various theoretical predictions are confirmed in one dimension, we find, for S=1 systems on a square lattice with an antiferromagnetic biquadratic interaction, that the intermediate phase between the antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic phases is disordered and that the two phase transitions are both of the first order in contrast to the one-dimensional case. It is strongly suggested that the transition points coincide those at which the algorithm changes qualitatively.

Optimization Algorithms Based on Renormalization Group

Global changes of states are of crucial importance in optimization algorithms. We review some heuristic algorithms in which global updates are realized by a sort of real-space renormalization group transformation. Emphasis is on the relationship between the structure of low-energy excitations and ``block-spins'' appearing in the algorithms. We also discuss the implication of existence of a finite-temperature phase transition on the computational complexity of the ground-state problem.

Fractal Droplets in Two Dimensional Spin Glasses

The two-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian bond distribution is investigated at T=0 with a numerical method. Droplet excitations are directly observed. It turns out that the averaged volume of droplets is proportional to l^D with D = 1.80(2) where l is the spanning length of droplets, revealing their fractal nature. The exponent characterizing the l dependence of the droplet excitation energy is estimated to be -0.42(4), clearly different from the stiffness exponent for domain wall excitations.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study on Magnetization Processes

A quantum Monte Carlo method combining update of the loop algorithm with the global flip of the world line is proposed as an efficient method to study the magnetization process in an external field, which has been difficult because of inefficiency of the update of the total magnetization. The method is demonstrated in the one dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model and the trimer model. We attempted various other Monte Carlo algorithms to study systems in the external field and compared their efficiency.
