Robust Adaptive measurement for qubit state preparation

This paper reconsiders the method of adaptive measurement for qubit state preparation developed by Jacobs and shows an alternative scheme that works even under unknown unitary evolution of the state. The key idea is that the measurement is adaptively changed so that one of the eigenstates of the measured observable is always set between the current and the target states at while that eigenstate converges to the target. The most significant feature of this scheme is that the measurement strength can be taken constant unlike Jacobs' one, which eventually provides fine robustness property of the controlled state against the uncertainty of the unitary evolution.

Phase quenching in finite-density QCD: models, holography, and lattice

Finite-density QCD is difficult to study numerically because of the sign problem. We prove that, in a certain region of the phase diagram, the phase quenched approximation is exact to O(Nf/Nc). It is true for any physical observables. We also consider the implications for the lattice simulations and find a quantitative evidence for the validity of the phase quenching from existing lattice QCD results at Nc=3. Our results show that the phase-quench approximation is rather good already at Nc=3, and the 1/Nc correction can be incorporated by the phase reweighting method without suffering from the overlap problem. We also show the same equivalence in effective models and holographic models.

Sign problem and phase quenching in finite-density QCD: models, holography, and lattice

The effect of the complex phase of the fermion determinant is a key question related to the sign problem in finite-density QCD. Recently it has been shown that ignoring the complex phase -- the phase quenching -- does not change physics in a certain region of the phase diagram when a number of colors N_c is large. In this paper we study the effect of the phase quenching within the frameworks of effective models and holographic models. We show, in a unified manner, that the phase quenching gives exact results for any fermionic observables (e.g., chiral condensate) in the mean-field approximation and for gauge-invariant gluonic observables (e.g., Polyakov loop) to one-meson-loop corrections beyond mean field. We also discuss implications for the lattice simulations and confirm good quantitative agreement between our prediction and existing lattice QCD results. Therefore the phase quenching provides rather accurate answer already at N_c=3 with small 1/N_c corrections which can be taken into account by the phase reweighting.

Distributed entanglement generation between continuous-mode Gaussian fields with measurement-feedback enhancement

This paper studies a scheme of two spatially distant oscillator systems that are connected by Gaussian fields and examines distributed entanglement generation between two continuous-mode output Gaussian fields that are radiated by the oscillators. It is demonstrated that using measurement-feedback control while a non-local effective entangling operation is on can help to enhance the Einstein-Podolski-Rosen (EPR)-like entanglement between the output fields. The effect of propagation delays and losses in the fields interconnecting the two oscillators, and the effect of other losses in the system, are also considered. In particular, for a range of time delays the measurement feedback controller is able to maintain stability of the closed-loop system and the entanglement enhancement, but the achievable enhancement is only over a smaller bandwidth that is commensurate with the length of the time delays.

Experimental demonstration of coherent feedback control on optical field squeezing

Coherent feedback is a non-measurement based, hence a back-action free, method of control for quantum systems. A typical application of this control scheme is squeezing enhancement, a purely non-classical effect in quantum optics. In this paper we report its first experimental demonstration that well agrees with the theory taking into account time delays and losses in the coherent feedback loop. The results clarify both the benefit and the limitation of coherent feedback control in a practical situation.

No-Go Theorem for Critical Phenomena in Large-Nc QCD

We derive some rigorous results on the chiral phase transition in QCD and QCD-like theories with a large number of colors, Nc, based on the QCD inequalities and the large-Nc orbifold equivalence. We show that critical phenomena and associated soft modes are forbidden in flavor-symmetric QCD at finite temperature T and finite but not so large quark chemical potential μfor any nonzero quark mass. In particular, the critical point in QCD at a finite baryon chemical potential μ_B = Ncμis ruled out, if the coordinate (T, μ) is outside the pion condensed phase in the corresponding phase diagram of QCD at a finite isospin chemical potential μ_I = 2μ.

Universality of Phases in QCD and QCD-like Theories

We argue that the whole or the part of the phase diagrams of QCD and QCD-like theories should be universal in the large-N_c limit through the orbifold equivalence. The whole phase diagrams, including the chiral phase transitions and the BEC-BCS crossover regions, are identical between SU(N_c) QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. Outside the BEC-BCS crossover region in these theories, the phase diagrams are also identical to that of SU(N_c) QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We give examples of the universality in some solvable cases: (i) QCD and QCD-like theories at asymptotically high density where the controlled weak-coupling calculations are possible, (ii) chiral random matrix theories of different universality classes, which are solvable large-N (large volume) matrix models of QCD. Our results strongly suggest that the chiral phase transition and the QCD critical point at finite baryon chemical potential can be studied using sign-free theories, such as QCD at finite isospin chemical potential, in lattice simulations.

Pure Gaussian state generation via dissipation: A quantum stochastic differential equation approach

Recently the complete characterization of a general Gaussian dissipative system having a unique pure steady state was obtained in [Koga and Yamamoto 2012, Phys. Rev. A 85, 022103]. This result provides a clear guideline for engineering an environment such that the dissipative system has a desired pure steady state such as a cluster state. In this paper, we describe the system in terms of a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) so that the environment channels can be explicitly dealt with. Then a physical meaning of that characterization, which cannot be seen without the QSDE representation, is clarified; more specifically, the nullifier dynamics of any Gaussian system generating a unique pure steady state is passive. In addition, again based on the QSDE framework, we provide a general and practical method to implement a desired dissipative Gaussian system, which has a structure of quantum state transfer.

Dissipation-induced pure Gaussian state

This paper provides some necessary and sufficient conditions for a generalMarkovian Gaussian master equation to have a unique pure steady state. The conditions are described by simple matrix equations; thus the so-called environment engineering problem for pure-Gaussian-state preparation can be straightforwardly dealt with in the linear algebraic framework. In fact, based on one of those conditions, for an arbitrary given pure Gaussian state,we obtain a complete parametrization of the Gaussian master equation having that state as a unique steady state; this leads to a systematic procedure for engineering a desired dissipative system. We demonstrate some examples including Gaussian cluster states.

Dynamical Gaussian state transfer with quantum error correcting architecture

Transferring a quantum state of a light field to a memory is of particular importance. However, this transfer is usually hampered because the memory system is subjected to some noise and this can limit the performance of the state transfer to a great extent. In this paper, we consider the transfer of a Gaussian state of light to a linear medium memory such as an opto-mechanical oscillator and propose a dynamical feedback controller that suppresses the noise in the memory system. To protect an unknown state, the feedback scheme employs the specific configuration of the quantum error correction; that is, a three-mode Gaussian state having appropriate syndromes is taken as the input. Correspondingly, the memory consists of three independent linear systems. The syndrome errors are estimated continuously in time through the measurement of the output field, and the results are then fed back to control the system. Because the input is Gaussian and the systems are all linear, it is possible to formulate the problem using the framework of the celebrated classical Kalman filtering and linear quadratic Gaussian control. A numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the control scheme.

Singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories

We study the singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories at zero temperature. The Dirac singular values are real and nonnegative at any nonzero quark density. The scale of their spectrum is set by the diquark condensate, in contrast to the complex Dirac eigenvalues whose scale is set by the chiral condensate at low density and by the BCS gap at high density. We identify three different low-energy effective theories with diquark sources applicable at low, intermediate, and high density, together with their overlapping domains of validity. We derive a number of exact formulas for the Dirac singular values, including Banks-Casher-type relations for the diquark condensate, Smilga-Stern-type relations for the slope of the singular value density, and Leutwyler-Smilga-type sum rules for the inverse singular values. We construct random matrix theories and determine the form of the microscopic spectral correlation functions of the singular values for all nonzero quark densities. We also derive a rigorous index theorem for non-Hermitian Dirac operators. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice simulations.

Universality of phase diagrams in QCD and QCD-like theories

We show the universality of phase diagrams in QCD and QCD-like theories through the large-N_c equivalence. The whole phase diagrams are identical between QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. In the chiral limit, they are also identical to that of QCD at finite chiral chemical potential. Outside the pion or diquark condensed phase in these theories, the universality of phase diagrams is applicable to QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We further argue that the universality may work approximately even for N_c=3. Our result makes it possible to study QCD at finite baryon chemical potential and high temperature, especially the chiral phase transition, using sign-free theories on the lattice.

Confined Monopoles Induced by Quantum Effects in Dense QCD

We analytically show that mesonic bound states of confined monopoles appear inside a non-Abelian vortex-string in massless three-flavor QCD at large quark chemical potential mu. The orientational modes CP^2 in the internal space of a vortex is described by the low-energy effective world-sheet theory. Mesons of confined monopoles are dynamically generated as bound states of kinks by the quantum effects in the effective theory. The mass of monopoles is shown to be an exponentially soft scale Delta*exp[-c*(mu/Delta)^2], with the color superconducting gap Delta and some constant c. A possible quark-monopole duality between the hadron phase and the color superconducting phase is also discussed.

Exact results for two-color QCD at low and high density

We discuss a random matrix theory that was originally constructed to describe two-color QCD at low density in the phase with a nonzero chiral condensate. With a particular choice of a parameter, the same random matrix theory also describes the high-density phase of two-color QCD. In this phase a BCS superfluid of diquark pairs is formed, and the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is very different from that at low density. Analytical results for the spectral density obtained from this random matrix theory allow for the extraction of the BCS gap from lattice data.

Holography and Anomaly Matching for Resonances

We derive a universal relation for the transverse part of triangle anomalies within a class of theories whose gravity dual is described by the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory. This relation provides a set of sum rules involving the masses, decay constants and couplings between resonances, and leads to the formulas for the matrix elements of the vector and axial currents in the presence of the soft electromagnetic field. We also discuss that this relation is valid in real QCD at least approximately. This may be regarded as the anomaly matching for resonances as an analogue of that for the massless excitations in QCD.

BEC-BCS crossover driven by the axial anomaly in the NJL model

We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the chiral-diquark interplay due to the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for a certain range of model parameters, the low temperature critical point predicted by a Ginzburg-Landau analysis appears in the phase diagram. In addition, we show that the axial anomaly presents a new scenario for a possible BEC-BCS crossover in the color-flavor locked phase of QCD.

Instabilities of Non-Abelian Vortices in Dense QCD

We construct a low-energy effective theory describing non-Abelian vortices in the color superconducting quark matter under stress. We demonstrate that all the vortices are radically unstable against decay into the only one type of vortices due to the potential term induced by the explicit flavor symmetry breaking by the strange quark mass. A simple analytical estimate for the lifetime of unstable vortices is provided under the controlled weak-coupling calculations. We briefly discuss the (non)existence of magnetic monopoles at high density.

Chiral random matrix theory for two-color QCD at high density

We identify a non-Hermitian chiral random matrix theory that corresponds to two-color QCD at high density. We show that the partition function of the random matrix theory coincides with the partition function of the finite-volume effective theory at high density, and that the Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules of the random matrix theory are identical to those derived from the effective theory. The microscopic Dirac spectrum of the theory is governed by the BCS gap, rather than the conventional chiral condensate. We also show that with a different choice of a parameter the random matrix theory yields the effective partition function at low density.
