Fermion pair production at $e^- e^+$ linear collider experiments in GUT inspired gauge-Higgs unification

Fermion pair production at $e^-e^+$ linear collider experiments with polarized $e^-$ and $e^+$ beams is examined in the GUT inspired $SO(5)\times U(1)\times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification. There arises large parity violation in the couplings of leptons and quarks to Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited neutral vector bosons $Z'$s, which leads to distinctive polarization dependence in cross sections, forward-backward asymmetries, left-right asymmetries, and left-right forward-backward asymmetries in various processes. Those effects are detectable even for the KK mass scale up to about 15 TeV at future $e^-e^+$ linear collider experiments with energies 250$\,$GeV to 1$\,$TeV.

The effective potential and universality in GUT inspired gauge-Higgs unification

The effective potential for the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the fifth dimension in GUT inspired $SO(5)\times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification is evaluated to show that dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking takes place with $θ_H \not= 0$, the 4D Higgs boson mass 125$\,$GeV being generated at the quantum level. The cubic and quartic self-couplings $(λ_3, λ_4)$ of the Higgs boson are found to satisfy universal relations, i.e. they are determined, to high accuracy, solely by $θ_H$, irrespective of values of other parameters in the model. For $θ_H=0.1$ ($0.15$), $λ_3$ and $λ_4$ are smaller than those in the standard model by 7.7% (8.1%) and 30% (32%), respectively.

CKM matrix and FCNC suppression in $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix and flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC's) in the quark sector are examined in the GUT inspired $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification in which the 4D Higgs boson is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension. Gauge invariant brane interactions play an important role for the flavor mixing in the charged-current weak interactions. The CKM matrix is reproduced except that the up quark mass needs to be larger than the observed one. FCNC's are naturally suppressed as a consequence of the gauge invariance, with a factor of order $10^{-6}$. It is also shown that induced flavor-changing Yukawa couplings are extremely small.

Dynamical Breaking to Special or Regular Subgroups in $SO(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

It is recently shown that in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type models, the $SU(N)$ symmetry breaking into its special subgroups is not special but much more common than that into the regular subgroups, where the fermions belong to complex representations of $SU(N)$. We perform the same analysis for $SO(N)$ NJL model for various $N$ with fermions belonging to an irreducible spinor representation of $SO(N)$. We find that the symmetry breaking into special or regular subgroups has some correlation with the type of fermion representations; i.e., complex, real, pseudo-real representations.

GUT inspired $SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification

$SO(5) \times U(1) \times SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification model inspired by $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification is constructed in the Randall-Sundrum warped space. The 4D Higgs boson is identified with the Aharonov-Bohm phase in the fifth dimension. Fermion multiplets are introduced in the bulk in the spinor, vector and singlet representations of $SO(5)$ such that they are implemented in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. The mass spectrum of quarks and leptons in three generations is reproduced except for the down quark mass. The small neutrino masses are explained by the gauge-Higgs seesaw mechanism which takes the same form as in the inverse seesaw mechanism in grand unified theories in four dimensions.

Is Symmetry Breaking into Special Subgroup Special?

The purpose of this paper is to show that the symmetry breaking into special subgroups is not special at all, contrary to the usual wisdom. To demonstrate this explicitly, we examine dynamical symmetry breaking pattern in 4D $SU(N)$ Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type models in which the fermion matter belongs to an irreducible representation of $SU(N)$. The potential analysis shows that for almost all cases at the potential minimum the $SU(N)$ group symmetry is broken to its special subgroups such as $SO(N)$ or $USp(N)$ when symmetry breaking occurs.

Family Unification in Special Grand Unification

We discuss family unification in grand unified theory (GUT) based on an $SU(19)$ GUT gauge group broken to its subgroups including a special subgroup. In the $SU(19)$ GUT on the six-dimensional (6D) orbifold space $M^4\times T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$, three generations of the 4D SM Weyl fermions can be embedded into a 6D bulk Weyl fermions in an $SU(19)$ second-rank anti-symmetric tensor representation. 6D and 4D gauge anomalies can be canceled out by considering proper matter content without 4D exotic chiral fermions at low energies.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Mass Spectra in Six-Dimensional Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

The mass spectra of the standard model particles are reproduced in the $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the six-dimensional warped space without introducing exotic light fermions. Light neutrino masses are explained by the gauge-Higgs seesaw mechanism. We evaluate the effective potential of the 4d Higgs boson appearing as a fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ in the extra-dimensioal space, and show that the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking takes place with the Higgs boson mass $m_H \sim 125\,$GeV and $θ_H \sim 0.1$. The Kaluza-Klein mass scale in the fifth dimension is approximately given by $m_{\rm KK} \sim 1.230\,{\rm TeV}/\sin θ_H$.

Gauge-Higgs Seesaw Mechanism in Six-Dimensional Grand Unification

$SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification is formulated in the six-dimensional hybrid warped space in which the fifth and sixth dimensions play as the electroweak and grand-unification dimensions. Fermions are introduced in ${\bf 32}$, ${\bf 11}$ and ${\bf 1}$ of $SO(11)$. Small neutrino masses naturally emerge as a result of a new seesaw mechanism in the gauge-Higgs unification which is characterized by a $3 \times 3$ mass matrix.

String-Inspired Special Grand Unification

We discuss a grand unified theory (GUT) based on an $SO(32)$ GUT gauge group broken to its subgroups including a special subgroup. In the $SO(32)$ GUT on six-dimensional (6D) orbifold space $M^4\times T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$, one generation of the SM fermions can be embedded into a 6D bulk Weyl fermion in the $SO(32)$ vector representation. We show that for a three generation model, all the 6D and 4D gauge anomalies in the bulk and on the fixed points are canceled out without exotic chiral fermions at low energies.

Special Grand Unification

We discuss new-type grand unified theories based on grand unified groups broken to their special subgroups as well as their regular subgroups. In the framework, when we construct four-dimensional (4D) chiral gauge theories, i.e., the Standard Model (SM), 4D gauge anomaly cancellation restricts the minimal number of generations of the 4D SM Weyl fermions. We show that in a six-dimensional (6D) $SU(16)$ gauge theory on $M^4\times T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ one generation of the SM fermions can be embedded into a 6D bulk Weyl fermion. For the model including three chiral generations of the SM fermions, the 6D and 4D gauge anomalies on the bulk and fixed points are canceled out without exotic 4D chiral fermions.

Toward Realistic Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

The $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is presented. The 4D Higgs field is identified as the zero mode of the fifth dimensional component of the gauge potentials, or as the fluctuation mode of the Aharonov-Bohm phase $θ_H$ along the fifth dimension. Fermions are introduced in the bulk in the spinor and vector representations of $SO(11)$. $SO(11)$ is broken to $SO(4) \times SO(6)$ by the orbifold boundary conditions, which is broken to $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times SU(3)_C$ by a brane scalar. Evaluating the effective potential $V_{\rm eff} (θ_H)$, we show that the electroweak symmetry is dynamically broken to $U(1)_{\rm EM}$. The quark-lepton masses are generated by the Hosotani mechanism and brane interactions, with which the observed mass spectrum is reproduced. The proton decay is forbidden thanks to the new fermion number conservation. It is pointed out that there appear light exotic fermions. The Higgs boson mass is determined with the quark-lepton masses given, which, however, turns out smaller than the observed value.

Gauge Coupling Unification in Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

We discuss renormalization group equations for gauge coupling constants in gauge-Higgs grand unification on five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum warped space. We show that all the four-dimensional Standard Model gauge coupling constants are asymptotically free and are effectively unified in $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unified theories on 5D Randall-Sundrum warped space.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

Gauge-Higgs grand unification is formulated. By extending $SO(5) \times U(1)_X$ gauge-Higgs electroweak unification, strong interactions are incorporated in $SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space. Quarks and leptons are contained in spinor and vector multiplets of $SO(11)$. Although the KK scale can be as low as $10 $ TeV, proton decay is forbidden by a conserved fermion number in the absence of Majorana masses of neutrinos.

Gauge-Higgs Grand Unification

$SO(11)$ gauge-Higgs grand unification in the Randall-Sundrum warped space is proposed. Orbifold boundary conditions and one brane scalar field reduce $SO(11)$ to the standard model symmetry, which is further broken to $SU(3)_C \times U(1)_{EM}$ by the Hosotani mechanism. In a minimal model quarks and leptons are contained in a multiplet in ${\bf 32}$ of $SO(11)$ in each generation. Proton decay is naturally suppressed by a conserved fermion number.

A Supersymmetric Grand Unified Model with Noncompact Horizontal Symmetry

In a supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified model with a horizontal symmetry SU(1,1), we discuss spontaneous generation of generations to produce three chiral generations of quarks and leptons and one generation of higgses by using one structure field with a half-integer spin of SU(1,1) and two structure fields with integer spins. In particular, the colored higgses can disappear without fine-tuning. The difference of the Yukawa coupling matrices between the down-type quarks and charged leptons is discussed. We show that some special SU(1,1) weight assignments include R-parity as a discrete subgroup, and R-parity remains even after we take into account the SU(1,1) breaking effects from all the VEVs of the structure and matter fields. The assignments forbid the baryon and/or lepton number violating terms except a superpotential quartic term including a coupling of two lepton doublets and two up-type higgses. We discuss how to generate sizable neutrino masses. We show that the proton decay derived from the colored higgses is highly suppressed.

New Mixing Structures of Chiral Generations in a Model with Noncompact Horizontal Symmetry

New mixing structures between chiral generations of elementary particles at low energy are shown in a vectorlike model with a horizontal symmetry SU(1,1). In this framework the chiral model including odd number chiral generations is realized via the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the horizontal symmetry. It is shown that the Yukawa coupling matrices of chiral generations have naturally hierarchical patterns, and in some cases the overall factors of their Yukawa coupling matrices, e.g. the Yukawa coupling constants of the bottom quark and tau lepton are naturally suppressed.

Properties of a Discrete Quantum Field Theory

A scalar quantum field theory defined on a discrete spatial coordinate is examined. The renormalization of the lattice propagator is discussed with an emphasis on the periodic nature of the associated momentum coordinate. The analytic properties of the scattering amplitudes indicate the development of a second branch point on which the branch cut from the optical theorem terminates.
