Finding Exponential Product Formulas of Higher Orders

In the present article, we review a continual effort on generalization of the Trotter formula to higher-order exponential product formulas. The exponential product formula is a good and useful approximant, particularly because it conserves important symmetries of the system dynamics. We focuse on two algorithms of constructing higher-order exponential product formulas. The first is the fractal decomposition, where we construct higher-order formulas recursively. The second is to make use of the quantum analysis, where we compute higher-order correction terms directly. As interludes, we also have described the decomposition of symplectic integrators, the approximation of time-ordered exponentials, and the perturbational composition.

Quantum Nernst Effect

It is theoretically predicted that the Nernst coefficient is strongly suppressed and the thermal conductance is quantized in the quantum Hall regime of the two-dimensional electron gas. The Nernst effect is the induction of a thermomagnetic electromotive force in the $y$ direction under a temperature bias in the $x$ direction and a magnetic field in the $z$ direction. The quantum nature of the Nernst effect is analyzed with the use of a circulating edge current and is demonstrated numerically. The present system is a physical realization of the non-equilibrium steady state.

Models of Universal Power-Law Distributions

Power-law distributions with various exponents are studied. We first introduce a simple and generic model that reproduces Zipf's law. We can regard this model both as the time evolution of the population of cities and that of the asset distribution. We show that our model is very robust against various variations. Next, we explain theoretically why our model reproduces Zipf's law. By considering the time-evolution equation of our model, we see that the essence of Zipf's law is an asymmetric random walk in a logarithmic scale. Finally, we extend our model by introducing an additional asymmetry. We show that the extended model reproduces various power-law exponents. By extending the theoretical argument for Zipf's law, we find a simple equation of the power-law exponent.

Evidence for the double degeneracy of the ground-state in the 3D $\pm J$ spin glass

A bivariate version of the multicanonical Monte Carlo method and its application to the simulation of the three-dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin glass are described. We found the autocorrelation time associated with this particular multicanonical method was approximately proportional to the system volume, which is a great improvement over previous methods applied to spin-glass simulations. The principal advantage of this version of the multicanonical method, however, was its ability to access information predictive of low-temperature behavior. At low temperatures we found results on the three-dimensional $\pm J$ Ising spin glass consistent with a double degeneracy of the ground-state: the order-parameter distribution function $P(q)$ converged to two delta-function peaks and the Binder parameter approached unity as the system size was increased. With the same density of states used to compute these properties at low temperature, we found their behavior changing as the temperature is increased towards the spin glass transition temperature. Just below this temperature, the behavior is consistent with the standard mean-field picture that has an infinitely degenerate ground state. Using the concept of zero-energy droplets, we also discuss the structure of the ground-state degeneracy. The size distribution of the zero-energy droplets was found to produce the two delta-function peaks of $P(q)$.

Universality of Zipf's Law

We introduce a simple and generic model that reproduces Zipf's law. By regarding the time evolution of the model as a random walk in the logarithmic scale, we explain theoretically why this model reproduces Zipf's law. The explanation shows that the behavior of the model is very robust and universal.

Triangular arbitrage as an interaction among foreign exchange rates

We first show that there are in fact triangular arbitrage opportunities in the spot foreign exchange markets, analyzing the time dependence of the yen-dollar rate, the dollar-euro rate and the yen-euro rate. Next, we propose a model of foreign exchange rates with an interaction. The model includes effects of triangular arbitrage transactions as an interaction among three rates. The model explains the actual data of the multiple foreign exchange rates well.

Non-Adiabatic Transition in Spin-Boson Model and Generalization of the Landau-Zener Formula

Non-adiabatic transitions are studied in a spin-boson model with multiple scattering points. In order to generalize the Landau-Zener formula, which describes the case of a single scattering point, we define an ``effective gap'' for a set of scattering points. The generalized formula agrees very well with numerical results of the non-adiabatic dynamics, which we obtained by a direct numerical method. This will make the Landau-Zener formula yet more useful in analyzing experimental data of magnetic-moment inversion.

Non-Hermitian Delocalization and Eigenfunctions

Recent literature on delocalization in non-Hermitian systems has stressed criteria based on sensitivity of eigenvalues to boundary conditions and the existence of a non-zero current. We emphasize here that delocalization also shows up clearly in eigenfunctions, provided one studies the product of left- and right-eigenfunctions, as required on physical grounds, and not simply the squared modulii of the eigenfunctions themselves. We also discuss the right- and left-eigenfunctions of the ground state in the delocalized regime and suggest that the behavior of these functions, when considered separately, may be viewed as ``intermediate'' between localized and delocalized.

Localization in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and flux-line pinning in superconductors

A recent development in studies of random non-Hermitian quantum systems is reviewed. Delocalization was found to occur under a sufficiently large constant imaginary vector potential even in one and two dimensions. The phenomenon has a physical realization as flux-line depinning in type-II superconductors. Relations between the delocalization transition and the complex energy spectrum of the non-Hermitian systems are described. Analytical and numerical results obtained for a non-Hermitian Anderson model are shown.

Vortex Pinning and Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics

A delocalization phenomenon is studied in a class of non-Hermitian random quantum-mechanical problems. Delocalization arises in response to a sufficiently large constant imaginary vector potential. The transition is related to depinning of flux lines from extended defects in type-II superconductors subject to a tilted external magnetic field. The physical meaning of the complex eigenvalues and currents of the non-Hermitian system is elucidated in terms of properties of tilted vortex lines. The singular behavior of the penetration length describing stretched exponential screening of a perpendicular magnetic field (transverse Meissner effect), the surface transverse magnetization, and the trapping length are determined near the flux-line depinning point.

Extrapolation-CAM Theory for Critical Exponents

By intentionally underestimating the rate of convergence of exact-diagonalization values for the mass or energy gaps of finite systems, we form families of sequences of gap estimates. The gap estimates cross zero with generically nonzero linear terms in their Taylor expansions, so that $ν= 1$ for each member of these sequences of estimates. Thus, the Coherent Anomaly Method can be used to determine $ν$. Our freedom in deciding exactly how to underestimate the convergence allows us to choose the sequence that displays the clearest coherent anomaly. We demonstrate this approach on the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model, for which $ν= 1$. We also use it on the three-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model, finding $ν\approx 0.629$, in good agreement with other estimates.

Localization transitions in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics

We study the localization transitions which arise in both one and two dimensions when quantum mechanical particles described by a random Schrödinger equation are subjected to a constant imaginary vector potential. A path-integral formulation relates the transition to flux lines depinned from columnar defects by a transverse magnetic field in superconductors. The theory predicts that the transverse Meissner effect is accompanied by stretched exponential relaxation of the field into the bulk and a diverging penetration depth at the transition.

Hidden Orders and RVB Formation of the Four-Leg Heisenberg Ladder Model

The ground state of the four-chain Heisenberg ladder model is numerically investigated. Hidden-order correlations suitable for the system are introduced and calculated with an emphasis on the spatially isotropic point, where a corresponding material exists. The existence of a long-range hidden correlation indicates formation of a short-range RVB state in the case of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. A transition between the phase of the ferromagnetic inter-chain coupling and that of the antiferromagnetic one is discussed.

Scaling Theory of Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Ladder Models

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on multi-leg ladders is investigated. Criticality of the ground-state transition is explored by means of finite-size scaling. The ladders with an even number of legs and those with an odd number of legs are distinguished clearly. In the former, the energy gap opens up as $ΔE\sim{J_\perp}$, where ${J_\perp}$ is the strength of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. In the latter, the critical phase with the central charge $c=1$ extends over the whole region of ${J_\perp}>0$.
