Gate-controlled one-dimensional channel on the topological surface

We investigate the formation of the one-dimensional channels on the topological surface under the gate electrode. The energy dispersion of these channels is almost linear in the momentum with the velocity sensitively depending on the strength of the gate voltage. The energy is also restricted to be positive or negative depending on the strength of the gate voltage. Consequently, the local density of states near the gated region has an asymmetric structure with respect to zero energy. In the presence of the electron-electron interaction, the correlation effect can be tuned by the gate voltage. We also suggest a tunneling experiment to verify the presence of these bound states.

Unconventional superconductivity on a topological insulator

We study proximity-induced superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator (TI), focusing on unconventional pairing. We find that the excitation spectrum becomes gapless for any spin-triplet pairing, such that both subgap bound states and Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed. For spin-singlet pairing, the zero-energy surface state in the $d_{xy}$-wave case becomes a Majorana fermion, in contrast to the situation realized in the topologically trivial high-$T_c$ cuprates. We also study the influence of a Zeeman field on the surface states. Both the magnitude and direction of this field is shown to strongly influence the transport properties, in contrast to the case without TI. We predict an experimental signature of the Majorana states via conductance spectroscopy.

Theory of electromagnon in the multiferroic Mn perovskites: Vital role of higher harmonic components of the spiral spin order

We study theoretically the electromagnon and its optical spectrum (OS) of the terahertz-frequency regime in the magnetic-spiral-induced multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, taking into account the elliptical deformation or the higher harmonics of the spiral spin configuration, which has been missed so far. A realistic spin Hamiltonian, which gives phase diagrams in agreement with experiments, resolves a long standing puzzle, i.e., the double-peak structure of the OS with a larger low-energy peak originating from magnon modes hybridized with the zone-edge state. We also predict the magnon branches associated with the electromagnon, which can be tested by neutron-scattering experiment.

Monopole Current and Unconventional Hall Response on Topological Insulator

We study theoretically the charged current above a topological insulator (TI) separated by a ferromagnetic insulating layer. An unconventional Hall response occurs in the conducting layer on top of the TI which approaches to a constant value independent of R for R< >l, where R is the separation between TI and conducting layer and l is the screening length. In the comoving frame, it can be interpreted as a monopole current attached to the TI surface. The same mechanism gives the Hall response and deflection of the electron beam injected to the surface of insulating ferromagnet. A realistic estimate of an order of magnitude shows that both effects give reasonably large signal experimentally accessible.

Electro-spinon in one-dimensional Mott insulator

The low-energy dynamical optical response of dimerized and undimerized spin liquid states in a one-dimensional charge transfer Mott insulator is theoretically studied. An exact analysis is given for the low-energy asymptotic behavior using conformal field theory for the undimerized state. In the dimerized state, the infrared absorption due to the bound state of two solitons, i.e, the breather mode, is predicted with an accurate estimate for its oscillator strength, offering a way to detect experimentally the excited singlet state. Effects of external magnetic fields are also discussed.

Anomalous magnetoresistance on the topological surface

We investigate charge transport in two-dimensional ferromagnet/feromagnet junction on a topological insulator. The conductance across the interface depends sensitively on the directions of the magnetizations of the two ferromagnets, showing anomalous behaviors compared with the conventional spin-valve. It is found that the conductance depends strongly on the in-plane direction of the magnetization. Moreover, in sharp contrast to the conventional magnetoresistance effect, in the p-n junction, the conductance at the parallel configuration is much smaller than that at the antiparallel configuration. This stems from the way how the wavefunctions connect between both sides.

Manipulation of Majorana fermion, Andreev reflection and Josephson current on topological insulators

We study theoretically charge transport properties of normal metal (N) / ferromagnet insulator (FI) / superconductor (S) junction and S/FI/S junction formed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), where chiral Majorana mode (CMM) exists at FI/S interface. We find that CMM generated in N/FI/S and S/FI/S junctions are very sensitively controlled by the direction of the magnetization ${\bm m}$ in FI region. Especially, the current-phase relation of Josephson current in S/FI/S junctions has a phase shift neither 0 nor $π$, which can be tuned continuously by the component of ${\bm m}$ perpendicular to the interface.

Optical conductivity of doped Mott insulator: the interplay between correlation and electron-phonon interaction

The optical conductivity (OC) of cuprates is studied theoretically in the low density limit of the t-t'-J-Holstein model. By developing a limited phonon basis exact diagonalization (LPBED) method capable of treating the lattice of largest size 4x4 ever considered, we are able to discern fine features of the mid-infrared (MIR) part of the OC revealing three-peak structure. The two lowest peaks are observed in experiments and the highest one is tacitly resolved in moderately doped cuprates. Comparison of OC with the results of semianalytic approaches and detailed analysis of the calculated isotope effect indicate that the middle-energy MIR peak is of mostly magnetic origin while the lowest MIR band originates from the scattering of holes by phonons.

Quantum spin Hall effect in a transition metal oxide Na2IrO3

We study theoretically the electronic states in a $5d$ transition metal oxide Na$_2$IrO$_3$, in which both the spin-orbit interaction and the electron correlation play crucial roles. Tight-binding model analysis together with the fisrt-principles band structure calculation predicts that this material is a layered quantum spin Hall system. Due to the electron correlation, an antiferromagnetic order first develops at the edge, and later inside the bulk at low temperatures.

Holstein polaron in the presence of disorder

Non-local, inhomogeneous and retarded response observed in experiments is reproduced by introducing the Inhomogeneous Momentum Average (IMA) method to study single polaron problems with disorder in the on-site potential and/or spatial variations of the electron-phonon couplings and/or phonon frequencies. We show that the electron-phonon coupling gives rise to an additional inhomogeneous, strongly retarded potential, which makes instant approximations questionable. The accuracy of IMA is demonstrated by comparison with results from the approximation free Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC) method. Its simplicity allows for easy study of many problems that were previously unaccessible. As an example, we show how inhomogeneities in the electron-phonon coupling lead to nonlocal, retarded response in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images.

Purely electric spin pumping in one-dimension

We show theoretically that a simple one dimensional system (such as metallic wire) can display quantum spin pumping possibly without pushing any charge. It is achieved by applying two slowly varying orthogonal gate electric fields on different sections of the wire, thereby generating local spin-orbit (Rashba) terms such that unitary transformations at different places do not commute. This construction is a unique manifestation of a spin-orbit observable effect in purely one dimensional systems with potentials respecting time-reversal symmetry.

Anomalous Hall effect

We present a review of experimental and theoretical studies of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), focusing on recent developments that have provided a more complete framework for understanding this subtle phenomenon and have, in many instances, replaced controversy by clarity. Synergy between experimental and theoretical work, both playing a crucial role, has been at the heart of these advances. On the theoretical front, the adoption of Berry-phase concepts has established a link between the AHE and the topological nature of the Hall currents which originate from spin-orbit coupling. On the experimental front, new experimental studies of the AHE in transition metals, transition-metal oxides, spinels, pyrochlores, and metallic dilute magnetic semiconductors, have more clearly established systematic trends. These two developments in concert with first-principles electronic structure calculations, strongly favor the dominance of an intrinsic Berry-phase-related AHE mechanism in metallic ferromagnets with moderate conductivity. The intrinsic AHE can be expressed in terms of Berry-phase curvatures and it is therefore an intrinsic quantum mechanical property of a perfect cyrstal. An extrinsic mechanism, skew scattering from disorder, tends to dominate the AHE in highly conductive ferromagnets. We review the full modern semiclassical treatment of the AHE together with the more rigorous quantum-mechanical treatments based on the Kubo and Keldysh formalisms, taking into account multiband effects, and demonstrate the equivalence of all three linear response theories in the metallic regime. Finally we discuss outstanding issues and avenues for future investigation.

Interacting two helical edge modes in quantum spin Hall systems

We study theoretically the two interacting one-dimensional helical modes at the edges of the quantum spin Hall systems. A new type of inter-edge correlated liquid (IECL) without the spin gap is found. This liquid shows the diverging density wave (DW) and superconductivity (SC) correlations much stronger than those of the spinfull electrons. Possible experimental observations are also discussed.

Skyrmions and Anomalous Hall Effect in a Dzyloshinskii-Moriya Spiral Magnet

Monte Carlo simulation study of a classical spin model with Dzylosinskii-Moriya interaction and the spin anisotropy under the magnetic field is presented. We found a rich phase diagram containing the multiple spin spiral (or skyrme crystal) phases of square, rectangular, and hexagonal symmetries in addition to the spiral spin state. The Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ is calculated within the $sd$ model for each of the phases. While $σ_{xy}$ is zero in the absence of external magnetic field, applying a field strength $H$ larger than a threshold value $H_c$ leads to the simultaneous onset of nonzero chirality and Hall conductivity. We find $H_c = 0$ for the multiple spin spiral states, but $H_c > 0$ for a single spin spiral state regardless of the field orientation. Relevance of the present results to MnSi is discussed.

Giant spin rotation in the normal metal/quantum spin Hall junction

We study theoretically reflection problem in the junction between a normal metal and an insulator characterized by a parameter $M$, which is a usual insulator for $M>0$ or a quantum spin Hall system for $M<0$. The spin rotation angle $α$ at the reflection is obtained in the plane of $M$ and the incident angle $θ$ measured from the normal to the interface. The $α$ shows rich structures around the quantum critical point M=0 and $θ=0$, i.e., $α$ can be as large as $\sim π$ at an incident angle in the quatum spin Hall case $M<0$ because the helical edge modes resonantly enhance the spin rotation, which can be used to map the energy dispersion of the helical edge modes. As an experimentally relevant system, we also study spin rotation effect in quantum spin Hall/normal metal/quantum spin Hall trilayer junction.

Spin Hall Effect of Excitons

Spin Hall effect for excitons in alkali halides and in Cu_2O is investigated theoretically. In both systems, the spin Hall effect results from the Berry curvature in k space, which becomes nonzero due to lifting of degeneracies of the exciton states by exchange coupling. The trajectory of the excitons can be directly seen as spatial dependence of the circularly polarized light emitted from the excitons. It enables us to observe the spin Hall effect directly in the real-space time.

Topological spin-current in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We study the spin transport properties of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor with time-reversal-symmetry where spin-triplet $(p_{x} \pm i p_{y})$-wave and spin-singlet s-wave pair potential can mix each other. We show that when the amplitude of $(p_{x} \pm ip_{y})$-wave pair potential is larger than that of s-wave one, the superconducting state belongs to the topologically nontrivial class analogous to the quantum spin Hall system, and the resulting helical edge modes as Andreev bound states are topologically protected. We find that the incident angle dependent spin polarized current flows through the interface due to the presence of the helical edge modes. With a weak magnetic field, also the angle-integrated current is strongly spin polarized.

Enhanced spin Hall effect by resonant skew scattering in orbital-selective Kondo effect

The enhanced spin Hall effect in Au metal due to the resonant skew scattering is studied with first-principles band structure calculations. Especially the gigantic spin Hall angle $γ_S \cong 0.1$ observed recently (T.Seki et al., Nature Materials {\bf 7}, 125 (2008)) is attributed to the orbital-dependent Kondo effect of Fe in the Au host metal, where the $t_{2g}$-orbitals are in the mixed-valence region while $e_g$-orbitals are in the Kondo limit. The enhanced spin-orbit interaction by the electron correlation in the $t_{2g}$-orbitals leads to the gigantic spin Hall effect. Impurities with 5d orbitals are also discussed.
