Constructing Concrete Hard Instances of the Maximum Independent Set Problem

We provide a deterministic construction of hard instances for the maximum independent set problem (MIS). The constructed hard instances form an infinite graph sequence with increasing size, which possesses similar characteristics to sparse random graphs and in which MIS cannot be solved efficiently. We analytically and numerically show that all algorithms employing cycle-chain refutation, which is a general refutation method we introduce for capturing the ability of many known algorithms, cannot upper bound the size of the maximum independent set tightly.

Analytic model of thermalization: Quantum emulation of classical cellular automata

We introduce a novel method of quantum emulation of a classical reversible cellular automaton. By applying this method to a chaotic cellular automaton, the obtained quantum many-body system thermalizes while all the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues are solvable. These explicit solutions allow us to verify the validity of some scenarios of thermalization to this system. We find that two leading scenarios, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis scenario and the large effective dimension scenario, do not explain thermalization in this model.

Reply to "Comment on "Systematic Construction of Counterexamples to the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis"" by Mondaini et.al

This paper is a Reply paper to the Comment paper by Mondaini et.al. [arXiv:1711.06279]. We first distinguish the diagonal and the off-diagonal eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in each sector and in the whole Hilbert space, and then clarify their properties and their roles in thermalization. We argue that our formulation of the ETH in our letter is a standard and natural one in the context of thermalization, and that our results are qualitatively new and unexpected.

Speed Limit for Classical Stochastic Processes

Speed limit for classical stochastic Markov processes with discrete states is studied. We find that a trade-off inequality exists between the speed of the state transformation and the entropy production. The dynamical activity determines the time scale and plays a crucial role in the inequality. For systems with stationary current, a similar trade-off inequality with the Hatano-Sasa entropy production gives a much better bound on the speed of the state transformation. Our inequalities contain only physically well-defined quantities, and thus the physical picture of these inequalities is clear.

Efficiency versus Speed in Quantum Heat Engines: Rigorous Constraint from Lieb-Robinson Bound

A long standing open problem whether a heat engine with finite power achieves the Carnot efficiency is investigated. We rigorously prove a general trade-off inequality on thermodynamic efficiency and time interval of a cyclic process with quantum heat engines. In a first step, employing the Lieb-Robinson bound we establish an inequality on the change in a local observable caused by an operation far from support of the local observable. This inequality provides a rigorous characterization of the following intuitive picture that most of the energy released from the engine to the cold bath remains near the engine when the cyclic process is finished. Using the above description, we finally prove an upper bound on efficiency with the aid of quantum information geometry. In addition, since our inequality falls down into the conventional second law of thermodynamics in Markovian limit, we adopt a completely different treatment which is developed in the context of classical stochastic processes. Our result generally excludes the possibility of a process with finite speed at the Carnot efficiency in quantum heat engines. In particular, the obtained constraint covers engines evolving with non-Markovian dynamics, which almost all previous studies on this topics fail to address.

Systematic Construction of Counterexamples to the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis

We propose a general method to embed target states into the middle of the energy spectrum of a many-body Hamiltonian as its energy eigenstates. Employing this method, we construct a translationally-invariant local Hamiltonian with no local conserved quantities, which does not satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. The absence of eigenstate thermalization for target states is analytically proved and numerically demonstrated. In addition, numerical calculations of two concrete models also show that all the energy eigenstates except for the target states have the property of eigenstate thermalization, from which we argue that our models thermalize after a quench even though they does not satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

Thermalization without eigenstate thermalization hypothesis after a quantum quench

Nonequilibrium dynamics of a nonintegrable system without the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is studied. It is shown that, in the thermodynamic limit, this model thermalizes after an arbitrary quantum quench at finite temperature, although it does not satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. In contrast, when the system size is finite and the temperature is low enough, the system may not thermalize. In this case, the steady state is well described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble constructed by using highly nonlocal conserved quantities. We also show that this model exhibits prethermalization, in which the prethermalized state is characterized by nonthermal energy eigenstates.

Finite-time thermodynamic uncertainty relation do not hold for discrete-time Markov process

Discrete-time counterpart of thermodynamic uncertainty relation (conjectured in P. Pietzonka, et.al., arXiv:1702.07699 (2017)) with finite time interval is considered. We show that this relation do not hold by constructing a concrete counterexample to this. Our finding suggests that the proof of thermodynamic uncertainty relation with finite time interval, if true, should strongly rely on the fact that the time is continuous.

Stationary engines in and beyond the linear response regime at the Carnot efficiency

The condition for stationary engines to attain the Carnot efficiency in and beyond the linear response regime is investigated. We find that this condition for finite-size engines is significantly different from that for macroscopic engines in the thermodynamic limit. For the case of finite-size engines, the tight-coupling condition in the linear response regime directly implies the attainability of the Carnot efficiency beyond the linear response regime. Contrary to this, for the case of macroscopic engines in the thermodynamic limit, there are three types of mechanisms to attain the Carnot efficiency. One mechanism allows engines to attain the Carnot efficiency only in the linear response limit, while other two mechanisms enable engines to attain the Carnot efficiency beyond the linear response regime. These three mechanisms are classified by introducing tight-coupling window.

Linear Irreversible Thermodynamics and Onsager Reciprocity for Information-driven Engines

In the recent progress in nonequilibrium thermodynamics, information has been recognized as a kind of thermodynamic resource that can drive thermodynamic current without any direct energy injection. In this paper, we establish the framework of linear irreversible thermodynamics for a broad class of autonomous information processing. In particular, we prove that the Onsager reciprocity holds true with information: The linear response matrix is well-defined, and is shown symmetric with both of the information affinity and the conventional thermodynamic affinity. As an application, we derive a universal bound for the efficiency at maximum power for information-driven engines in the linear regime. Our result reveals the fundamental role of information flow in linear irreversible thermodynamics, and would be applicable to study the role of information in biological systems.

Universal trade-off relation between power and efficiency for heat engines

For a general thermodynamic system described as a Markov process, we prove a general lower bound for dissipation in terms of the square of the heat current, thus establishing that nonvanishing current inevitably implies dissipation. This leads to a universal trade-off relation between efficiency and power, with which we rigorously prove that a heat engine with nonvanishing power never attains the Carnot efficiency. Our theory applies to systems arbitrarily far from equilibrium, and does not assume any specific symmetry of the model.

Incompatibility between Carnot efficiency and finite power in Markovian dynamics

In Markovian dynamics with the local detailed balance condition, we decompose the total entropy production rate into microscopic transitions. By applying this decomposition to the heat to work conversion process, we rigorously show that the Carnot efficiency implies zero power for any heat engine, even with broken time-reversal symmetry beyond the linear response regime. Moreover, we propose a trade-off relationship between the entropy production rate and the heat flow between the system and bath.

Measurement-feedback formalism meets information reservoirs

There have been two distinct formalisms of thermodynamics of information: One is the measurement-feedback formalism, which concerns bipartite systems with measurement and feedback processes, and the other is the information reservoir formalism, which considers bit sequences as a thermodynamic fuel. In this paper, we derive a second-law-like inequality by applying the measurement-feedback formalism to information reservoirs, which provides a stronger bound of extractable work than any other known inequality in the same setup. In addition, we demonstrate that the Mandal-Jarzynski model, which is a prominent model of the information reservoir formalism, is equivalent to a model obtained by the contraction of a bipartite system with autonomous measurement and feedback. Our results provide a unified view on the measurement-feedback and the information-reservoir formalisms.

Attainability of Carnot Efficiency with Autonomous Engines

The maximum efficiency of autonomous engines with finite chemical potential difference is investigated. We show that without a particular type of singularity autonomous engines cannot attain the Carnot efficiency. In addition, we demonstrate that a special autonomous engine with the singularity attains the Carnot efficiency even if it is macroscopic. Our results clearly illustrate that the singularity plays a crucial role for the maximum efficiency of autonomous engines.

Role of measurement-feedback separation in autonomous Maxwell's demons

We introduce an information heat engine that is autonomous (i.e., without any time-dependent parameter) but has separated measurement and feedback processes. This model serves as a bridge between the other types of information heat engines inspired by Maxwell's demon; from the original Szilard-engine type systems to the autonomous demonic setups. By analyzing our model on the basis of a general framework introduced in our previous paper [N. Shiraishi and T. Sagawa, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 91}, 012130 (2015).], we clarify the role of the separation of measurement and feedback in the integral fluctuation theorems.

Fluctuation Theorem for Partially-masked Nonequilibrium Dynamics

We establish a novel generalization of the fluctuation theorem for partially-masked nonequilibrium dynamics. We introduce a partial entropy production with a subset of all possible transitions, and show that the partial entropy production satisfies the integral fluctuation theorem. Our result reveals the fundamental properties of a broad class of autonomous nanomachines as well as non-autonomous ones. In particular, our result gives a unified fluctuation theorem for both autonomous and non-autonomous Maxwell's demons, where mutual information plays a crucial role. Furthermore, we derive a novel kind of fluctuation-dissipation theorem that relates nonequilibrium stationary current to two kinds of equilibrium fluctuations.

Anomalous System Size Dependence of Large Deviation Functions for Local Empirical Measure

We study the large deviation function for the empirical measure of diffusing particles at one fixed position. We find that the large deviation function exhibits anomalous system size dependence in systems that satisfy the following conditions: (i) there exists no macroscopic flow, and (ii) their space dimension is one or two. We investigate this anomaly by using a contraction principle. We also analyze the relation between this anomaly and the so-called long-time tail behavior on the basis of phenomenological arguments.
