Diffusion model for analyzing quantum fingerprints in conductance fluctuation

A conditional diffusion model has been developed to analyze intricate conductance fluctuations called universal conductance fluctuations or quantum fingerprints appearing in quantum transport phenomena. The model reconstructs impurity arrangements and quantum interference patterns in nanometals by using magnetoconductance data, providing a novel approach to analyze complex data based on machine learning. In addition, we visualize the attention weights in the model, which efficiently extract information on the non-local correlation of the electron wave functions, and the score functions, which represent the force fields in the wave-function space.

Holographic Dual of Quantum Spin Chain as Chern-Simons-Scalar Theory

We construct a holographic dual theory of one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain, which includes two Chern-Simons gauge fields and a charged scalar field. Thermodynamic quantities of the spin chain at low temperatures, which are exactly calculated from the integrability, are completely reproduced by the dual theory on three-dimensional black hole backgrounds and the exact matching of the parameters between the dual theory and the spin chain is obtained. The holographic dual theory provides a new theoretical framework to analyze the quantum spin chain and one-dimensional quantum many-body systems.

Magnetization Dynamics in Holographic Ferromagnets: Landau-Lifshitz Equation from Yang-Mills Fields

We introduce a new approach to understand magnetization dynamics in ferromagnets based on the holographic realization of ferromagnets. A Landau-Lifshitz equation describing the magnetization dynamics is derived from a Yang-Mills equation in the dual gravitational theory, and temperature dependences of the spin-wave stiffness and spin transfer torque appearing in the holographic Landau-Lifshitz equation are investigated by the holographic approach. The results are consistent with the known properties of magnetization dynamics in ferromagnets with conduction electrons.

Stimulated Emission of Dark Matter Axion from Condensed Matter Excitations

We discuss a possible principle for detecting dark matter axions in galactic halos. If axions constitute a condensate in the Milky Way, stimulated emissions of the axions from a type of excitation in condensed matter can be detectable. We provide general mechanism for the dark matter emission, and, as a concrete example, an emission of dark matter axions from magnetic vortex strings in a type II superconductor are investigated along with possible experimental signatures.

A Holographic Realization of Ferromagnets

A holographic realization for ferromagnetic systems has been constructed. Owing to the holographic dictionary proposed on the basis of this realization, we obtained relevant thermodynamic quantities such as magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and free energy. This holographic model reproduces the behavior of the mean field theory near the critical temperature. At low temperatures, the results automatically incorporate the contributions from spin wave excitations and conduction electrons.

Quark confinement via magnetic color-flavor locking

The color-flavor locking phenomenon in the magnetic picture can be the microscopic description of the quark confinement in QCD. We demonstrate it in an N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xSU(Nc) quiver gauge theory coupled to Nf flavors of quarks (Nf<Nc). This model reduces to SU(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors when the vacuum expectations value of the link field is much larger than the dynamical scales, and thus provides a continuous deformation of the N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We study a vacuum which survives upon adding a superpotential term to reduce to N=1 while preserving the vectorial SU(Nf) flavor symmetry. We find a region of the parameter space where the confinement is described by the Higgsing of a weakly coupled magnetic SU(Nf)xU(1) gauge theory. The Higgsing locks the quantum numbers of SU(Nf) magnetic color to those of SU(Nf) flavor symmetry, and thus the massive magnetic gauge bosons become the singlet and adjoint representations of the flavor group, i.e, the vector mesons. If the qualitative picture remains valid in non-supersymmetric QCD, one can understand the Hidden Local Symmetry as the magnetic dual description of QCD, and the confining string is identified as the vortex of vector meson fields.

Making confining strings out of mesons

The light mesons such as pi, rho, omega, f0, and a0 are possible candidates of magnetic degrees of freedom, if a magnetic dual picture of QCD exists. We construct a linear sigma model to describe spontaneous breaking of the magnetic gauge group, in which there is a stable vortex configuration of vector and scalar mesons. We numerically examine whether such a string can be interpreted as the confining string. By using meson masses and couplings as inputs, we calculate the tension of the string as well as the strength of the Coulomb force between static quarks. They are found to be consistent with those inferred from the quarkonium spectrum and the Regge trajectories of hadrons. By using the same Lagrangian, the critical temperature of the QCD phase transition is estimated, and a non-trivial flavor dependence is predicted. We also discuss a possible connection between the Seiberg duality and the magnetic model we studied.

Spectral-Function Sum Rules in Supersymmetry Breaking Models

The technique of Weinberg's spectral-function sum rule is a powerful tool for a study of models in which global symmetry is dynamically broken. It enables us to convert information on the short-distance behavior of a theory to relations among physical quantities which appear in the low-energy picture of the theory. We apply such technique to general supersymmetry breaking models to derive new sum rules.

Near horizon superconformal symmetry of rotating BPS black holes in five dimensions

We investigate the asymptotic supersymmetry group of the near horizon region of the BMPV black holes, which are the rotating BPS black holes in five dimensions. When considering only bosonic fluctuations, we show that there exist consistent boundary conditions and the corresponding asymptotic symmetry group is generated by a chiral Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central charge. After turning on fermionic fluctuations with the boundary conditions, we also show that the asymptotic supersymmetry group is generated by a chiral super-Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central extension. The super-Virasoro algebra is originated in the AdS2 isometry supergroup of the near horizon solution.

Operator Formulation of Green-Schwarz Superstring in the Semi-Light-Cone Conformal Gauge

In this article we present a comprehensive account of the operator formulation of the Green-Schwarz superstring in the semi-light-cone (SLC) gauge, where the worldsheet conformal invariance is preserved. Starting from the basic action, we systematically study the symmetry structure of the theory in the SLC gauge both in the Lagrangian and the phase space formulations. After quantizing the theory in the latter formulation we construct the quantum Virasoro and the super-Poincare generators and clarify the closure properties of these symmetry algebras. Then by making full use of this knowledge we will be able to construct the BRST-invariant vertex operators which describe the emission and the absorption of the massless quanta and show that they form the appropriate representation of the quantum symmetry algebras. Furthermore, we will construct an exact quantum similarity transformation which connects the SLC gauge and the familiar light-cone (LC) gauge. As an application BRST-invariant DDF operators in the SLC gauge are obtained starting from the corresponding physical oscillators in the LC gauge.

Smoothing out Negative Tension Brane

We propose an extension of the five dimensional gravitational action with an external source in order to allow arbitrary smoothing of the negative tension brane in the Randall-Sundrum model. This extended action can be derived from a model with an auxiliary four form field coupled to the gravity. We point out a further generalization of our model in relation to tachyon condensation. A possible mechanism for radion stabilization in our model is also discussed.

Superstring in the plane-wave background with RR flux as a conformal field theory

We study the type IIB superstring in the plane-wave background with Ramond-Ramond flux and formulate it as an exact conformal field theory in operator formalism. One of the characteristic features of the superstring in a consistent background with RR flux, such as the AdS5xS5 and its plane-wave limit, is that the left- and the right-moving degrees of freedom on the worldsheet are inherently coupled. In the plane-wave case, it is manifested in the well-known fact that the Green-Schwarz formulation of the theory reduces to that of free massive bosons and fermions in the light-cone gauge. This raises the obvious question as to how this feature is reconciled with the underlying conformal symmetry of the string theory. By adopting the semi-light-cone conformal gauge, we will show that, despite the existence of such non-linear left-right couplings, one can construct two independent sets of quantum Virasoro operators in terms of fields obeying the free-field commutation relations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the BRST cohomology analysis reproduces the physical spectrum obtained in the light-cone gauge.

On the moduli space of semilocal strings and lumps

We study BPS non-abelian semilocal vortices in U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors, Nf > Nc, in the Higgs phase. The moduli space for arbitrary winding number is described using the moduli matrix formalism. We find a relation between the moduli spaces of the semilocal vortices in a Seiberg-like dual pairs of theories, U(Nc) and U(Nf-Nc). They are two alternative regularizations of a "parent" non-Hausdorff space, which tend to the same moduli space of sigma-model lumps in the infinite gauge coupling limits. We examine the normalizability of the zero-modes and find the somewhat surprising phenomenon that the number of normalizable zero-modes, dynamical fields in the effective action, depends on the point of the moduli space we are considering. We find, in the lump limit, an effective action on the vortex worldsheet, which we compare to that found by Shifman and Yung.

Non-Abelian duality from vortex moduli: a dual model of color-confinement

It is argued that the dual transformation of non-Abelian monopoles occurring in a system with gauge symmetry breaking G -> H is to be defined by setting the low-energy H system in Higgs phase, so that the dual system is in confinement phase. The transformation law of the monopoles follows from that of monopole-vortex mixed configurations in the system (with a large hierarchy of energy scales, v_1 >> v_2) G -> H -> 0, under an unbroken, exact color-flavor diagonal symmetry H_{C+F} \sim {\tilde H}. The transformation property among the regular monopoles characterized by π_2(G/H), follows from that among the non-Abelian vortices with flux quantized according to π_1(H), via the isomorphism π_1(G) \sim π_1(H) / π_2(G/H). Our idea is tested against the concrete models -- softly-broken {\cal N}=2 supersymmetric SU(N), SO(N) and USp(2N) theories, with appropriate number of flavors. The results obtained in the semiclassical regime (at v_1 >> v_2 >> Λ) of these models are consistent with those inferred from the fully quantum-mechanical low-energy effective action of the systems (at v_1, v_2 \sim Λ).

Non-Abelian Vortices of Higher Winding Numbers

We make a detailed study of the moduli space of winding number two (k=2) axially symmetric vortices (or equivalently, of co-axial composite of two fundamental vortices), occurring in U(2) gauge theory with two flavors in the Higgs phase, recently discussed by Hashimoto-Tong (hep-th/0506022) and Auzzi-Shifman-Yung (hep-th/0511150). We find that it is a weighted projective space WCP^2_(2,1,1)=CP^2/Z_2. This manifold contains an A_1-type (Z_2) orbifold singularity even though the full moduli space including the relative position moduli is smooth. The SU(2) transformation properties of such vortices are studied. Our results are then generalized to U(N) gauge theory with N flavors, where the internal moduli space of k=2 axially symmetric vortices is found to be a weighted Grassmannian manifold. It contains singularities along a submanifold.

Nonabelian Confinement near Nontrivial Conformal Vacua

We discuss some aspects of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the so-called nonabelian Argyres-Douglas vacua, which occur very generally in supersymmetric theories. These systems are characterized by strongly-coupled nonabelian monopoles and dyons; confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking are caused by the condensation of monopole composites, rather than by condensation of single weakly-coupled monopoles. In general, there are strong constraints on which kind of monopoles can appear as the infrared degrees of freedom, related to the proper realization of the global symmetry of the theory. Drawing analogies to some of the phenomena found here, we make a speculation on the ground state of the standard QCD.

Wheeler-DeWitt Equation in AdS/CFT Correspondence

We discuss a quantum extension of the holographic RG flow equation obtained previously from the classical Hamiltonian constraint in the bulk AdS supergravity. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation is proposed to generate the extended RG flow and to produce 1/N subleading corrections systematically. Our formulation in five dimensions is applied to the derivation of the Weyl anomaly of boundary N=4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory beyond the large N limit. It is shown that subleading 1/N^2 corrections arising from fields in AdS_5 supergravity agree with those obtained recently by Mansfield et al. using their Schroedinger equation, thereby guaranteeing to reproduce the exact form of the boundary Weyl anomaly after summing up all of the KK modes.

Comments on Quantum Aspects of Three-Dimensional de Sitter Gravity

We investigate the quantum aspects of three-dimensional gravity with a positive cosmological constant. The reduced phase space of the three-dimensional de Sitter gravity is obtained as the space which consists of the Kerr-de Sitter space-times and their Virasoro deformations. A quantization of the phase space is carried out by the geometric quantization of the coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro symmetries. The Virasoro algebras with real central charges are obtained as the quantum asymptotic symmetries. The states of globally de Sitter and point particle solutions become the primary states of the unitary irreducible representations of the Virasoro algebras. It is shown that those states are perturbatively stable at the quantum level. The Virasoro deformations of these solutions correspond to the excited states in the unitary irreducible representations. In view of the dS/CFT correspondence, we also study the relationship between the Liouville field theory obtained by a reduction of the SL(2;$\mathbb{C}$) Chern-Simons theory and the three-dimensional gravity both classically and quantum mechanically. In the analyses of the both theories, the Kerr-de Sitter geometries with nonzero angular momenta do not give the unitary representations of the Virasoro algebras.
