Molecularly Thin Polyaramid Nanomechanical Resonators

Two-dimensional polyaramids exhibit strong hydrogen bonding to create molecularly thin nanosheets analogous to graphene. Here, we report the first nanomechanical resonators made out of a two-dimensional polyaramid, 2DPA-1, with thicknesses as small as 8 nm. To fabricate these molecular-scale resonators, we transferred nanofilms of 2DPA-1 onto chips with previously etched arrays of circular microwells. We then characterized the thermal resonances of these resonators under different conditions. When there is no residual gas inside the 2DPA-1-covered microwells, the eigenfrequencies are well-described by a tensioned plate theory, providing the Young's modulus and tension of the 2DPA-1 nanofilms. With gas present, the nanofilms bulge up and mechanical resonances are modified due to the adhesion, bulging and slack present in the system. The fabrication and mechanical characterization of these first 2DPA-1 nanomechanical resonators represent a convincing path toward molecular-scale polymeric NEMS with high mechanical strength, low density, and synthetic processability.

Blister Test to Measure the Out-of-Plane Shear Modulus of Few-Layer Graphene

We measure the out-of-plane shear modulus of few-layer graphene (FLG) by a blister test. During the test, we employed a monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) membrane stacked onto FLG wells to facilitate the separation of FLG from the silicon oxide (SiOx) substrate. Using the deflection profile of the blister, we determine an average shear modulus G of 0.97 +- 0.15 GPa, and a free energy model incorporating the interfacial shear force is developed to calculate the adhesion energy between FLG and SiOx substrate. The experimental protocol can be extended to other two-dimensional (2D) materials and layered structures (LS) made from other materials (WS2, hBN, etc.) to characterize their interlayer interactions. These results provide valuable insight into the mechanics of 2D nano devices which is important in designing more complex flexible electronic devices and nanoelectromechanical systems.

Adhesion of 2D MoS$_2$ to Graphite and Metal Substrates Measured by a Blister Test

Using a blister test, we measured the work of separation between MoS$_2$ membranes from metal, semiconductor, and graphite substrates. We found a work of separation ranging from 0.11 +- 0.05 J/m^2 for chromium to 0.39 +- 0.1 J/m^2 for graphite substrates. In addition, we measured the work of adhesion of MoS$_2$ membranes over these substrates and observed a dramatic difference between the work of separation and adhesion which we attribute to adhesion hysteresis. Due to the prominent role that adhesive forces play in the fabrication and functionality of devices made from 2D materials, an experimental determination of the work of separation and adhesion as provided here will help guide their development.

SFCDecomp: Multicriteria Optimized Tool Path Planning in 3D Printing using Space-Filling Curve Based Domain Decomposition

We explore efficient optimization of toolpaths based on multiple criteria for large instances of 3D printing problems. We first show that the minimum turn cost 3D printing problem is NP-hard, even when the region is a simple polygon. We develop SFCDecomp, a space filling curve based decomposition framework to solve large instances of 3D printing problems efficiently by solving these optimization subproblems independently. For the Buddha model, our framework builds toolpaths over a total of 799,716 nodes across 169 layers, and for the Bunny model it builds toolpaths over 812,733 nodes across 360 layers. Building on SFCDecomp, we develop a multicriteria optimization approach for toolpath planning. We demonstrate the utility of our framework by maximizing or minimizing tool path edge overlap between adjacent layers, while jointly minimizing turn costs. Strength testing of a tensile test specimen printed with tool paths that maximize or minimize adjacent layer edge overlaps reveal significant differences in tensile strength between the two classes of prints.

Adhesion, Stiffness and Instability in Atomically Thin MoS2 Bubbles

We measured the work of separation of single and few-layer MoS2 membranes from a SiOx substrate using a mechanical blister test, and found a value of 220 +- 35 mJ/m^2. Our measurements were also used to determine the 2D Young's modulus of a single MoS2 layer to be 160 +- 40 N/m. We then studied the delamination mechanics of pressurized MoS2 bubles, demonstrating both stable and unstable transitions between the bubbles' laminated and delaminated states as the bubbles were inflated. When they were deflated, we observed edge pinning and a snap-in transition which are not accounted for by the previously reported models. We attribute this result to adhesion hysteresis and use our results to estimate the work of adhesion of our membranes to be 42 +- 20 mJ/m^2.
