Quasinormal modes of a charged spherical black hole with scalar hair for scalar and Dirac perturbations

The quasinormal modes of charged and uncharged massive scalar fields and also of charged Dirac fields against the background of a charged spherical black hole endowed with a scalar hair have been investigated. Special emphasis has been given to the case where negative scalar charge dominates over the electric charge of the black hole which mimics an Einstein-Rosen bridge. Except for the complete monotonic behaviour of the damping (imaginary part of the quasinormal mode) against the charge of the black hole as opposed to the existence of a peak for the pure RN case, the qualitative behaviour does not appreciably change due to the presence of scalar hair.

Electromagnetic effect on anisotropic scalar field collapse in higher curvature gravity

We consider a `Scalar-Maxwell-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet' theory in four dimension, where the scalar field couples non-minimally with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. This coupling with the scalar field ensures the non topological character of the GB term. In such higher curvature scenario, we explore the effect of electromagnetic field on scalar field collapse. Our results reveal that the presence of a time dependent electromagnetic field requires an anisotropy in the background spacetime geometry and such anisotropic spacetime allows a collapsing solution for the scalar field. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity which may be point like or line like depending on the strength of the anisotropy. We also show that the singularity is always hidden from exterior by an apparent horizon.

Astronomical bounds on a cosmological model allowing a general interaction in the dark sector

Non-gravitational interaction between two barotropic dark fluids, namely the pressureless dust and the dark energy in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker model has been discussed. It is shown that for the interactions which are linear in terms the energy densities of the dark components and their first order derivatives, the net energy density is governed by a second order differential equation with constant coefficients. Taking a generalized interaction, which includes a number of already known interactions as special cases, the dynamics of the universe is described for three types of the dark energy equation of state, namely that of interacting quintessence, interacting vacuum energy density and interacting phantom. The models have been constrained using the standard cosmological probes, Supernovae type Ia data from joint light curve analysis and the observational Hubble parameter data. Two geometric tests, the cosmographic studies and the $Om$ diagnostic have been invoked so as to ascertain the behaviour of the present model vis-a-vis the $Λ$-cold dark matter model. We further discussed the interacting scenarios taking into account the thermodynamic considerations.

Scalar field collapse in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We consider a "Scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet" theory in four dimension, where the scalar field couples non minimally with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. This coupling with the scalar field ensures the non topological character of the GB term. In this scenario, we examine the possibility for collapsing of the scalar field. Our result reveals that such a collapse is possible in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet gravity for suitable choices of parametric regions. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity which is hidden from exterior by an apparent horizon.

Inflationary scenario from higher curvature warped spacetime

We consider a five dimensional AdS spacetime, in presence of higher curvature term like $F(R) = R + αR^2$ in the bulk, in the context of Randall-Sundrum two-brane model. Our universe is identified with the TeV scale brane and emerges as a four dimensional effective theory. From the perspective of this effective theory, we examine the possibility of "inflationary scenario" by considering the on-brane metric ansatz as an FRW one. Our results reveal that the higher curvature term in the five dimensional bulk spacetime generates a potential term for the radion field. Due to the presence of radion potential, the very early universe undergoes a stage of accelerated expansion and moreover the accelerating period of the universe terminates in a finite time. We also find the spectral index of curvature perturbation ($n_s$) and tensor to scalar ratio ($r$) in the present context, which match with the observational results based on the observations of $Planck$ $2015$.

Constraining a dark matter and dark energy interaction scenario with a dynamical equation of state

In this work we have used the recent cosmic chronometers data along with the latest estimation of the local Hubble parameter value, $H_0$ at 2.4\% precision as well as the standard dark energy probes, such as the Supernovae Type Ia, baryon acoustic oscillation distance measurements, and cosmic microwave background measurements (PlanckTT $+$ lowP) to constrain a dark energy model where the dark energy is allowed to interact with the dark matter. A general equation of state of dark energy parametrized by a dimensionless parameter `$β$' is utilized. From our analysis, we find that the interaction is compatible with zero within the 1$σ$ confidence limit. We also show that the same evolution history can be reproduced by a small pressure of the dark matter.

An Exact Interior Kerr Solution

We present a simple exact solution for the interior of a rotating star. The interpretation of the stress energy tensor as that of a fluid requires the existence of a high viscosity, which is quite expected for a rotating fluid. In spite of the negative stresses, energy conditions are in fact all satisfied.

Generalized Brans-Dicke Theory: A Dynamical Systems Analysis

The stability criteria for the generalized Brans-Dicke cosmology in a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model is discussed in the presence of a perfect fluid. The generalization comes through the channel that the Brans-Dicke coupling parameter $ω$ is allowed to be a function of the scalar field $ϕ$. This generalization can lead to a host of scalar-tensor theories of gravity for various choices of $ω= ω(ϕ)$. A very interesting general result has been found. Excepting for the case of a radiation distribution as the choice of the fluid, all other solutions find a natural habitat in the corresponding solutions in general relativity in an infinite $ω$ limit. For the radiation distribution, the dependence of stability on $ω$ is a bit obscure. If a scalar potential, function of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, is added to the action, the requirement of an infinite $ω$ for stability is relaxed for a matter distribution with a non-zero trace whereas it becomes a possibility for a radiation distribution.

Scalar field collapse in a conformally flat spacetime

The collapse scenario of a scalar field along with a perfect fluid distribution is investigated for a conformally flat spacetime. The theorem for the integrability of an anharmonic oscillator has been utilized. For a pure power law potential of the form $ϕ^{n+1}$, it is found that a central singularity is formed which is covered by an apparent horizon for $n>0$ and $n<-3$. Some numerical results have also been presented for a combination of two different powers of $ϕ$ in the potential.

Self-similar scalar field collapse

A spherically symmetric collapsing scalar field model is discussed with a dissipative fluid which includes a heat flux. This vastly general matter distribution is analyzed at the expense of a high degree of symmetry in the space-time, that of conformal flatness and self-similarity. Indeed collapsing models terminating into a curvature singularity can be obtained. The formation of black holes or the occurrence of naked singularities depends on the initial collapsing profiles.

In search of the dark matter dark energy interaction: a kinematic approach

The present work deals with a kinematic approach to the modelling the late time dynamics of the universe. This approach is based upon the assumption of constant value of cosmological jerk parameter, which is the dimensionless representation of the 3rd order time derivative of the scale factor. For the $Λ$CDM model, the value of jerk parameter is -1 throughout the evolution history. Now any model dependent estimation of the value of the jerk parameter would indicate the deviation of the model from the cosmological constant. In the present work, it has also been shown that for a constant jerk parameter model, any deviation of its value from -1 would not allow the dark matter to have an independent conservation, thus indicating towards an interaction between dark matter and dark energy. Statistical analysis with different observational data sets (namely the observational Hubble parameter data (OHD), the type Ia supernova data (SNe), and the baryon acoustic oscillation data (BAO)) lead to a well constrained values of the jerk parameter and the model remains at a very close proximity of the $Λ$CDM. The possibility of interaction is found to be more likely at high redshift rather than at present epoch.

Equivalence of Einstein and Jordan frames in quantized cosmological models

The present work shows that the mathematical equivalence of Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame, so far as Brans-Dicke theory is concerned, survives a quantization of cosmological models in the theory. We work with the Wheeler-deWitt quantization scheme and take up quite a few anisotropic cosmological models as examples. We effectively show that the transformation from Jordan to Einstein frame is a canonical one and hence two frames are equivalent description of same physical scenario.

Equivalence of Jordan and Einstein frames at the quantum level

It is shown that the Jordan frame and its conformally transformed version, the Einstein frame of nonminimally coupled theories of gravity, are actually equivalent at the quantum level. The example of the theory taken up is the Brans-Dicke theory, and the wave packet calculations are done for a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model in the purest form of the theory, i.e., in the absence of any additional matter sector. The calculations are clean and exact, and the result obtained are unambiguous.

Gravitational collapse in f(R) gravity for a spherically symmetric spacetime admitting a homothetic Killing vector

The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.

Spherically symmetric collapse of a perfect fluid in f(R) gravity

The present work investigates the gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid in $f(R)$ gravity models. For a general $f(R)$ theory, it is shown analytically that a collapse is quite possible. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity of shell focusing type. The possibility of the formation of an apparent horizon hiding the central singularity depends on the initial conditions.

Unitary evolution for anisotropic quantum cosmologies: models with variable spatial curvature

Contrary to the general belief, there has recently been quite a few examples of unitary evolution of quantum cosmological models. The present work gives more examples, namely Bianchi type VI and type II. These examples are important as they involve varying spatial curvature unlike the most talked about homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models like Bianchi I, V and IX. We exhibit either explicit example of the unitary solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, or at least show that a self-adjoint extension is possible.

A question mark on the equivalence of Einstein and Jordan frames

With an explicit example, we show that Jordan frame and the conformally transformed Einstein frames clearly lead to different physics for a non-minimally coupled theory of gravity, namely Brans-Dicke theory, at least at the quantum level. The example taken up is the spatially flat Friedmann cosmology in Brans-Dicke theory.

A parametric reconstruction of the cosmological jerk from diverse observational data sets

A parametric reconstruction of the jerk parameter, the third order derivative of the scale factor expressed in a dimensionless way, has been discussed. Observational constraints on the model parameters have been obtained by Maximum Likelihood Analysis of the models using Supernova Distance Modulus data (SNe), Observational Hubble Data (OHD), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data and CMB shift parameter data (CMBShift). The present value of the jerk parameter has been kept open to start with, but the plots of various cosmological parameter like deceleration parameter $q(z)$, jerk parameter $j(z)$, dark energy equation of state parameter $w_{DE}(z)$ indicate that the reconstructed models are very close to a $Λ$CDM model with a slight inclination towards a non-phantom behaviour of the evolution.
