Chameleon field and the late time acceleration of the universe

In the present work, it is shown that a chameleon scalar field having a nonminimal coupling with dark matter can give rise to a smooth transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion for the universe. It is surprising to note that the coupling with the chameleon scalar field hardly affects the evolution of the dark matter sector, which still redshifts as $a^{-3}$.

Holographic dark energy in Brans-Dicke theory

In this Letter it is shown that when the holographic dark energy is combined with the Brans-Dicke field equations the transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion of the Universe can be more easily accounted for than when resort to the Einstein field equations is made. Likewise, the coincidence problem of late cosmic acceleration gets more readily softened.

An interacting scalar field and the recent cosmic acceleration

In this paper it is shown that the Brans - Dicke scalar field itself can serve the purpose of providing an early deceleration and a late time acceleration of the universe without any need of quintessence field if one considers an interaction, i.e, transfer of energy between the dark matter and the Brans - Dicke scalar field.

A late time acceleration of the universe with two scalar fields : many possibilities

In the present work, an attempt has been made to explain the recent cosmic acceleration with two mutually interacting scalar fields, one being the Brans-Dicke scalar field and the other a quintessence scalar field. Conditions have been derived for which the quintessence scalar field has an early oscillation and it grows during a later time to govern the dynamics of the universe.

Curvature driven acceleration : a utopia or a reality ?

The present work shows that a combination of nonlinear contribution from the Ricci curvature in Einstein field equations can drive a late time acceleration of expansion of the universe. The transit from the decelerated to the accelerated phase of expansion takes place smoothly without having to resort to a study of asymptotic behaviour. This result emphasizes the need for thorough and critical examination of models with nonlinear contribution from the curvature.

Acceleration of the universe with a simple trigonometric potential

In this paper we investigate the quintessence model with a minimally coupled scalar field in the context of recent supernovae observations. By choosing a particular form of the deceleration parameter q, which gives an early deceleration and late time acceleration for dust dominated model, we show that this sign flip in q can be obtained by a simple trigonometric patential. The early matter dominated model expands with q=1/2 as desired and enters a negative q phase quite late during the evolution.

Periodic distribution of galaxies in generalized scalar tensor theory

With the help of Nordtvedt's scalar tensor theory an exact analytical model of a non-minimally coupled scalar field cosmology in which the gravitational coupling $G$ and the Hubble factor $H$ oscillate during the radiation era is presented. A key feature is that the oscillations are confined to the early stages of the radiation dominated era with $G$ approaching its present constant value while $H$ becoming a monotonically decreasing function of time. The Brans Dicke parameter $ω$ is chosen to be a function of Brans Dicke scalar field so that no conflict with observational constraints regarding its present value arises.

On the detection of scalar hair

It is shown that the conclusion regarding the existence of a scalar hair for a black hole in a nonminimally coupled self interacting scalar tensor theory can be drawn from the that for a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity by means of a conformal transformation.

Cosmic acceleration without quintessence

It is argued that the Brans-Dicke theory may explain the present accelerated expansion of the universe without resorting to a cosmological constant or quintessence matter

Global monopoles and scalar fields as the electrogravity dual of Schwarzschild spacetime

We prove that both global monopole and minimally coupled static zero mass scalar field are electrogravity dual of the Schwarzschild solution or flat space and they share the same equation of state, $T^0_0 - T^i_i = 0$. This property was however known for the global monopole spacetime while it is for the first time being established for the scalar field. In particular, it turns out that the Xanthopoulos - Zannias scalar field solution is dual to flat space.
