Defect Detection in Magnetic Systems Using U-Net and Statistical Measures

Local material inhomogeneities can strongly influence magnetization dynamics and macroscopic magnetic properties, yet detecting such defects from magnetic imaging data remains challenging when thermal fluctuations and experimental noise obscure static contrast. Here, we investigate defect detection in strongly fluctuating magnetization regimes where signatures of inhomogeneities largely average out in time-resolved measurements. Using finite-temperature micromagnetic simulations with randomly distributed defects and material parameters representative of \ce{Ni80Fe20}, we compute per-pixel temporal mean, temporal standard deviation, and latent entropy and use them as inputs for U-Net-based semantic segmentation models. We find that the most effective descriptor depends on the noise level and, importantly, that robust detection requires training data that reflect the expected noise statistics. These results provide practical guidance for designing noise-robust defect-detection workflows in magnetic imaging.

Magnetoelastic coupling enabled tunability of magnon spin current generation in 2D antiferromagnets

We theoretically investigate the magnetoelastic coupling (MEC) and its effect on magnon transport in two-dimensional antiferromagnets with a honeycomb lattice. MEC coeffcient along with magnetic exchange parameters and spring constants are computed for monolayers of transition metal trichalcogenides with Néel order ($\text{MnPS}_3$ and $\text{VPS}_3$) and zigzag order ($\text{CrSiTe}_3$, $\text{NiPS}_3$ and $\text{NiPSe}_3$) by $ab$ $initio$ calculations. Using these parameters, we predict that the spin-Nernst coefficient is significantly enhanced due to magnetoelastic coupling. Our study shows that although Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can produce spin Nernst effect in these materials, other mechanisms such as magnon-phonon coupling should be taken into account. We also demonstrate that the magnetic anisotropy is an important factor for control of magnon-phonon hybridization and enhancement of the Berry curvature and thus the spin-Nernst coefficient. Our results pave the way towards gate tunable spin current generation in 2D magnets by SNE via electric field modulation of MEC and anisotropy.

Dynamics of magnetic nano-flake vortices in Newtonian fluids

We study the rotational motion of nano-flake ferromagnetic discs suspended in a Newtonian fluid, as a potential material owing the vortex-like magnetic configuration. Using analytical expressions for hydrodynamic, magnetic and Brownian torques, the stochastic angular momentum equation is determined in the dilute limit conditions under applied magnetic field. Results are compared against experimental ones and excellent agreement is observed. We also estimate the uncertainty in the orientation of the discs due to the Brownian torque when an external magnetic field aligns them. Interestingly, this uncertainty is roughly proportional to the ratio of thermal energy of fluid to the magnetic energy stored in the discs. Our approach can be implemented in many practical applications including biotechnology and multi-functional fluidics.
