Exact and approximate solutions of Schroedinger's equation for a class of trigonometric potentials

The asymptotic iteration method is used to find exact and approximate solutions of Schroedinger's equation for a number of one-dimensional trigonometric potentials (sine-squared, double-cosine, tangent-squared, and complex cotangent). Analytic and approximate solutions are obtained by first using a coordinate transformation to reduce the Schroedinger equation to a second-order differential equation with an appropriate form. The asymptotic iteration method is also employed indirectly to obtain the terms in perturbation expansions, both for the energies and for the corresponding eigenfunctions.

Discrete spectra for confined and unconfined -a/r + b r^2 potentials in d dimensions

Exact solutions to the d-dimensional Schroedinger equation, d\geq 2, for Coulomb plus harmonic oscillator potentials V(r)=-a/r+br^2, b>0 and a\ne 0 are obtained. The potential V(r) is considered both in all space, and under the condition of spherical confinement inside an impenetrable spherical box of radius R. With the aid of the asymptotic iteration method, the exact analytic solutions under certain constraints, and general approximate solutions, are obtained. These exhibit the parametric dependence of the eigenenergies on a, b, and R. The wave functions have the simple form of a product of a power function, an exponential function, and a polynomial. In order to achieve our results the question of determining the polynomial solutions of the second-order differential equation (\sum_{i=0}^{k+2}a_{k+2,i}r^{k+2-i})y"+(\sum_{i=0}^{k+1}a_{k+1,i}r^{k+1-i})y'-(\sum_{i=0}^{k}τ_{k,i}r^{k-i})y=0 for k=0,1,2 is solved.

Study of the generalized quantum isotonic nonlinear oscillator potential

We study the generalized quantum isotonic oscillator Hamiltonian given by H=-d^2/dr^2+l(l+1)/r^2+w^2r^2+2g(r^2-a^2)/(r^2+a^2)^2, g>0. Two approaches are explored. A method for finding the quasi-polynomial solutions is presented, and explicit expressions for these polynomials are given, along with the conditions on the potential parameters. By using the asymptotic iteration method we show how the eigenvalues of this Hamiltonian for arbitrary values of the parameters g, w and a may be found to high accuracy.

Spectral characteristics for a spherically confined -1/r + br^2 potential

We consider the analytical properties of the eigenspectrum generated by a class of central potentials given by V(r) = -a/r + br^2, b>0. In particular, scaling, monotonicity, and energy bounds are discussed. The potential $V(r)$ is considered both in all space, and under the condition of spherical confinement inside an impenetrable spherical boundary of radius R. With the aid of the asymptotic iteration method, several exact analytic results are obtained which exhibit the parametric dependence of energy on a, b, and R, under certain constraints. More general spectral characteristics are identified by use of a combination of analytical properties and accurate numerical calculations of the energies, obtained by both the generalized pseudo-spectral method, and the asymptotic iteration method. The experimental significance of the results for both the free and confined potential V(r) cases are discussed.

Generalized quantum isotonic nonlinear oscillator in d dimensions

We present a supersymmetric analysis for the d-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the generalized isotonic nonlinear-oscillator potential V(r)={B^2}/{r^{2}}+ω^{2} r^{2}+2g{(r^{2}-a^{2})}/{(r^{2}+a^{2})^{2}}, B\geq 0. We show that the eigenequation for this potential is exactly solvable provided g=2 and (ωa^2)^2 = B^2 +(\ell +(d-2)/2)^2. Under these conditions, we obtain explicit formulae for all the energies and normalized bound-state wavefunctions.

Calculation of generalized Hubbell rectangular source integral

A simple formula for computing the generalized Hubbell radiation rectangular source integral $$H[{a,b,p,λ\atop α,β,γ}]=\frac{σa}{4π}\int_0^b x^λ(x^2+p)^{-α}{}_2F_1(α,β;γ;-{a^2\over x^2+p})dx, $$ is introduced. Tables are given to compare the numerical values derived from our approximation formula with those given earlier in the literature.

Physical applications of second-order linear differential equations that admit polynomial solutions

Conditions are given for the second-order linear differential equation P3 y" + P2 y'- P1 y = 0 to have polynomial solutions, where Pn is a polynomial of degree n. Several application of these results to Schroedinger's equation are discussed. Conditions under which the confluent, biconfluent, and the general Heun equation yield polynomial solutions are explicitly given. Some new classes of exactly solvable differential equation are also discussed. The results of this work are expressed in such way as to allow direct use, without preliminary analysis.

Soft-core Coulomb potentials and Heun's differential equation

Schroedinger's equation with the attractive potential V(r) = -Z/(r^q+ b^q)^(1/q), Z > 0, b > 0, q >= 1, is shown, for general values of the parameters Z and b, to be reducible to the confluent Heun equation in the case q=1, and to the generalized Heun equation in case q=2. In a formulation with correct asymptotics, the eigenstates are specified a priori up to an unknown factor. In certain special cases this factor becomes a polynomial. The Asymptotic Iteration Method is used either to find the polynomial factor and the associated eigenvalue explicitly, or to construct accurate approximations for them. Detail solutions for both cases are provided.

Energies and wave functions for a soft-core Coulomb potential

For the family of model soft Coulomb potentials represented by V(r) = -\frac{Z}{(r^q+β^q)^{\frac{1}{q}}}, with the parameters Z>0, β>0, q \ge 1, it is shown analytically that the potentials and eigenvalues, E_{ν\ell}, are monotonic in each parameter. The potential envelope method is applied to obtain approximate analytic estimates in terms of the known exact spectra for pure power potentials. For the case q =1, the Asymptotic Iteration Method is used to find exact analytic results for the eigenvalues E_{ν\ell} and corresponding wave functions, expressed in terms of Z and β. A proof is presented establishing the general concavity of the scaled electron density near the nucleus resulting from the truncated potentials for all q. Based on an analysis of extensive numerical calculations, it is conjectured that the crossing between the pair of states [(ν,\ell),(ν',\ell')], is given by the condition ν'\geq (ν+1) and \ell' \geq (\ell+3). The significance of these results for the interaction of an intense laser field with an atom is pointed out. Differences in the observed level-crossing effects between the soft potentials and the hydrogen atom confined inside an impenetrable sphere are discussed.

Solvable Systems of Linear Differential Equations

The asymptotic iteration method (AIM) is an iterative technique used to find exact and approximate solutions to second-order linear differential equations. In this work, we employed AIM to solve systems of two first-order linear differential equations. The termination criteria of AIM will be re-examined and the whole theory is re-worked in order to fit this new application. As a result of our investigation, an interesting connection between the solution of linear systems and the solution of Riccati equations is established. Further, new classes of exactly solvable systems of linear differential equations with variable coefficients are obtained. The method discussed allow to construct many solvable classes through a simple procedure.

Tables of the Appell Hypergeometric Functions $F_2$

The generalized hypergeometric function $_qF_p$ is a power series in which the ratio of successive terms is a rational function of the summation index. The Gaussian hypergeometric functions $_2F_1$ and $_3F_2$ are most common special cases of the generalized hypergeometric function $_qF_p$. The Appell hypergeometric functions $F_q$, $q=1,2,3,4$ are product of two hypergeometric functions $_2F_1$ that appear in many areas of mathematical physics. Here, we are interested in the Appell hypergeometric function $F_2$ which is known to have a double integral representation. As demonstrated by Opps, Saad, and Srivastava (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 302 (2005) 180-195), the double integral representation of $F_2$ can be reduced to a single integral that can be easily evaluated for certain values of the parameters in terms of $_2F_1$ and $_3F_2$. Using many of the reduction formulas of $_2F_1$ and $_3F_2$ and the representation of $F_2$ in terms of a single integral, we have begun to tabulate new reduction formulas for $F_2$.

Critical box radii, at which states are no longer bound, are also calculated. The results are compared with those in the literature.

The Casimir Force in Randall Sundrum Models with q+1 dimensions

We evaluate the Casimir force between two parallel plates in Randall Sundrum (RS) scenarios extended by q compact dimensions. After giving exact expressions for one extra compact dimension (RS 6D model), we generalize to an arbitrary number of compact dimensions. We present the complete calculation for both two brane scenario (RSI model) and one brane scenario (RSII models) using the method of summing over the modes. We investigate the effects of extra dimensions on the magnitude and sign of the force, and comment on limits for the size and number of the extra dimensions.

Asymptotic Iteration method for singular potentials

The asymptotic iteration method (AIM) is applied to obtain highly accurate eigenvalues of the radial Schroedinger equation with the singular potential V(r)=r^2+λ/r^α(α,λ> 0) in arbitrary dimensions. Certain fundamental conditions for the application of AIM, such as a suitable asymptotic form for the wave function, and the termination condition for the iteration process, are discussed. Several suggestions are introduced to improve the rate of convergence and to stabilize the computation. AIM offers a simple, accurate, and efficient method for the treatment of singular potentials such as V(r) valid for all ranges of coupling λ.

The Klein-Gordon equation with the Kratzer potential in d dimensions

We apply the Asymptotic Iteration Method to obtain the bound-state energy spectrum for the d-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with scalar S(r) and vector potentials V(r). When S(r) and V(r) are both Coulombic, we obtain all the exact solutions; when the potentials are both of Kratzer type, we obtain all the exact solutions for S(r)=V(r); if S(r) > V(r) we obtain exact solutions under certain constraints on the potential parameters: in this case, a possible general solution is found in terms of a monic polynomial, whose coefficients form a set of elementary symmetric polynomials.

Eigenvalue bounds for polynomial central potentials in d dimensions

If a single particle obeys non-relativistic QM in R^d and has the Hamiltonian H = - Delta + f(r), where f(r)=sum_{i = 1}^{k}a_ir^{q_i}, 2\leq q_i < q_{i+1}, a_i \geq 0$, then the eigenvalues E = E_{n\ell}^{(d)}(λ) are given approximately by the semi-classical expression E = \min_{r > 0}[\frac{1}{r^2} + \sum_{i = 1}^{k}a_i(P_ir)^{q_i}]. It is proved that this formula yields a lower bound if P_i = P_{n\ell}^{(d)}(q_1), an upper bound if $P_i = P_{n\ell}^{(d)}(q_k) and a general approximation formula if P_i = P_{n\ell}^{(d)}(q_i). For the quantum anharmonic oscillator f(r)=r^2+λr^{2m},m=2,3,... in d dimension, for example, E = E_{n\ell}^{(d)}(λ) is determined by the algebraic expression λ={1\over β}({2α(m-1)\over mE-δ})^m({4α\over (mE-δ)}-{E\over (m-1)}) where δ={\sqrt{E^2m^2-4α(m^2-1)}} and α, βare constants. An improved lower bound to the lowest eigenvalue in each angular-momentum subspace is also provided. A comparison with the recent results of Bhattacharya et al (Phys. Lett. A, 244 (1998) 9) and Dasgupta et al (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., 40 (2007) 773) is discussed.

Solutions for certain classes of Riccati differential equation

We derive some analytic closed-form solutions for a class of Riccati equation y'(x)-λ_0(x)y(x)\pm y^2(x)=\pm s_0(x), where λ_0(x), s_0(x) are C^{\infty}-functions. We show that if δ_n=λ_n s_{n-1}-λ_{n-1}s_n=0, where λ_{n}= λ_{n-1}^\prime+s_{n-1}+λ_0λ_{n-1} and s_{n}=s_{n-1}^\prime+s_0λ_{k-1}, n=1,2,..., then The Riccati equation has a solution given by y(x)=\mp s_{n-1}(x)/λ_{n-1}(x). Extension to the generalized Riccati equation y'(x)+P(x)y(x)+Q(x)y^2(x)=R(x) is also investigated.
