Poisson Commuting Energies for a System of Infinitely Many Bosons

We consider the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy in one spatial dimension. We establish the existence of an infinite sequence of observables such that the corresponding trace functionals, which we call ``energies,'' commute with respect to the weak Lie-Poisson structure defined by the authors in arXiv:1908.03847. The Hamiltonian equation associated to the third energy functional is precisely the GP hierarchy. The equations of motion corresponding to the remaining energies generalize the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy, the third element of which is the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This work provides substantial evidence for the GP hierarchy as a new integrable system.

Small data global well-posedness for a Boltzmann equation via bilinear spacetime estimates

We provide a new analysis of the Boltzmann equation with constant collision kernel in two space dimensions. The scaling-critical Lebesgue space is $L^2_{x,v}$; we prove global well-posedness and a version of scattering, assuming that the data $f_0$ is sufficiently smooth and localized, and the $L^2_{x,v}$ norm of $f_0$ is sufficiently small. The proof relies upon a new scaling-critical bilinear spacetime estimate for the collision "gain" term in Boltzmann's equation, combined with a novel application of the Kaniel-Shinbrot iteration.

A Rigorous Derivation of the Hamiltonian Structure for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in any spatial dimension, which is a well-known example of an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system. Inspired by the knowledge that the NLS is an effective equation for a system of interacting bosons as the particle number tends to infinity, we provide a derivation of the Hamiltonian structure, which is comprised of both a Hamiltonian functional and a weak symplectic structure, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation from quantum many-body systems. Our geometric constructions are based on a quantized version of the Poisson structure introduced by Marsden, Morrison and Weinstein for a system describing the evolution of finitely many indistinguishable classical particles.

On pointwise exponentially weighted estimates for the Boltzmann equation

In this paper we prove propagation in time of weighted $L^\infty$ bounds for solutions to the non-cutoff homogeneous Boltzmann equation that satisfy propagation in time of weighted $L^1$ bounds. To emphasize that the propagation in time of weighted $L^{\infty}$ bounds relies on the propagation in time of weighted $L^1$ bounds, we express our main result using certain general weights. Consequently we apply the main result to cases of exponential and Mittag-Leffler weights, for which propagation in time of weighted $L^1$ bounds holds.

An infinite sequence of conserved quantities for the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$

We consider the (de)focusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$, which is an infinite hierarchy of coupled linear inhomogeneous PDE which appears in the derivation of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation from quantum many-particle systems. Motivated by the fact that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb{R}$ is an integrable equation which admits infinitely many conserved quantities, we exhibit an infinite sequence of operators which generate analogous conserved quantities for the GP hierarchy.

On the scattering problem for infinitely many fermions in dimensions $d\geq3$ at positive temperature

In this paper, we study the dynamics of a system of infinitely many fermions in dimensions $d\geq3$ near thermal equilibrium and prove scattering in the case of small perturbation around equilibrium in a certain generalized Sobolev space of density operators. This work is a continuation of our previous paper, and extends the important recent result of M. Lewin and J. Sabin of a similar type for dimension d=2. In the work at hand, we establish new, improved Strichartz estimates that allow us to control the case $d\geq3$.

On Mittag-Leffler moments for the Boltzmann equation for hard potentials without cutoff

We establish the $L^1$ weighted propagation properties for solutions of the Boltzmann equation with hard potentials and non-integrable angular components in the collision kernel. Our method identifies null forms by angular averaging and deploys moment estimates of solutions to the Boltzmann equation whose summability is achieved by introducing the new concept of Mittag-Leffler moments - extensions of $L^1$ exponentially weighted norms. Such $L^1$ weighted norms of solutions to the Boltzmann equation are, both, generated and propagated in time and the characterization of their corresponding Mittag-Leffler weights depends on the angular singularity and potential rates in the collision kernel. These estimates are a fundamental step in order to obtain $L^\infty$ exponentially weighted estimates for solutions of the Boltzmann equation being developed in a follow up work.

Local well-posedness for Boltzmann's equation and the Boltzmann hierarchy via Wigner transform

We use the dispersive properties of the linear Schrödinger equation to prove local well-posedness results for the Boltzmann equation and the related Boltzmann hierarchy, set in the spatial domain $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. The proofs are based on the use of the (inverse) Wigner transform along with the spacetime Fourier transform. The norms for the initial data $f_0$ are weighted versions of the Sobolev spaces $L^2_v H^α_x$ with $α\in \left( \frac{d-1}{2},\infty\right)$. Our main results are local well-posedness for the Boltzmann equation for cutoff Maxwell molecules and hard spheres, as well as local well-posedness for the Boltzmann hierarchy for cutoff Maxwell molecules (but not hard spheres); the latter result holds without any factorization assumption for the initial data.

Higher order energy conservation and global wellposedness of solutions for Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider the cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies in $d$ dimensions, for focusing and defocusing interactions. We introduce new higher order energy functionals and prove that they are conserved for solutions of energy subcritical defocusing, and $L^2$ subcritical (de)focusing GP hierarchies, in spaces also used by Erdös, Schlein and Yau in \cite{esy1,esy2}. By use of this tool, we prove a priori $H^1$ bounds for positive semidefinite solutions in those spaces. Moreover, we obtain global well-posedness results for positive semidefinite solutions in the spaces studied in the works of Klainerman and Machedon, \cite{klma}, and in \cite{chpa2}. As part of our analysis, we prove generalizations of Sobolev and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities for density matrices.

Multilinear Morawetz identities for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy

This article consists of two parts. In the first part, we review the most recent proofs establishing quadratic Morawetz inequalities for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We also describe the applications of these estimates to the problem of quantum scattering. In the second part, we generalize some of the methods developed for the NLS by many authors to the case of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. In particular, we prove both regular and interaction Morawetz identities for the GP hierarchy, which appear here for the first time in the literature.

A lower bound on blowup rates for the 3D incompressible Euler equation and a single exponential Beale-Kato-Majda type estimate

We prove a Beale-Kato-Majda type criterion for the loss of regularity for solutions of the incompressible Euler equations in $H^{s}({\mathbb R}^3)$, for $s>\frac52$. Instead of double exponential estimates of Beale-Kato-Majda type, we obtain a single exponential bound on $\|u(t)\|_{H^s}$ involving the length parameter introduced by P. Constantin in \cite{co1}. In particular, we derive lower bounds on the blowup rate of such solutions.

Global Well-posedness of the NLS System for infinitely many fermions

In this paper, we study the mean field quantum fluctuation dynamics for a system of infinitely many fermions with delta pair interactions in the vicinity of an equilibrium solution (the Fermi sea) at zero temperature, in dimensions $d=2,3$, and prove global well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. Our work extends some of the recent important results obtained by M. Lewin and J. Sabin, who addressed this problem for more regular pair interactions.

Almost sure existence of global weak solutions for super-critical Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we show that after suitable data randomization there exists a large set of super-critical periodic initial data, in $H^{-α}({\mathbb T}^d)$ for some $α(d) > 0$, for both 2d and 3d Navier-Stokes equations for which global energy bounds are proved. As a consequence, we obtain almost sure super-critical global weak solutions. We also show that in 2d these global weak solutions are unique.

Derivation of the cubic NLS and Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy from manybody dynamics in $d=3$ based on spacetime norms

We derive the defocusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy in dimension $d=3$, from an $N$-body Schrödinger equation describing a gas of interacting bosons in the GP scaling, in the limit $N\rightarrow\infty$. The main result of this paper is the proof of convergence of the corresponding BBGKY hierarchy to a GP hierarchy in the spaces introduced in our previous work on the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for GP hierarchies, \cite{chpa2,chpa3,chpa4}, which are inspired by the solutions spaces based on space-time norms introduced by Klainerman and Machedon in \cite{klma}. We note that in $d=3$, this has been a well-known open problem in the field. While our results do not assume factorization of the solutions, consideration of factorized solutions yields a new derivation of the cubic, defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in $d=3$.

The quintic NLS as the mean field limit of a Boson gas with three-body interactions

We investigate the dynamics of a boson gas with three-body interactions in dimensions $d=1,2$. We prove that in the limit of infinite particle number, the BBGKY hierarchy of $k$-particle marginals converges to a limiting (Gross-Pitaevskii (GP)) hierarchy for which we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions. Factorized solutions of the GP hierarchy are shown to be determined by solutions of a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our proof is based on, and extends, methods of Erdös-Schlein-Yau, Klainerman-Machedon, and Kirkpatrick-Schlein-Staffilani.

Stability and Unconditional Uniqueness of Solutions for Energy Critical Wave Equations in High Dimensions

In this paper we establish a complete local theory for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation (NLW) in high dimensions ${\mathbb R} \times {\mathbb R}^d$ with $d \geq 6$. We prove the stability of solutions under the weak condition that the perturbation of the linear flow is small in certain space-time norms. As a by-product of our stability analysis, we also prove local well-posedness of solutions for which we only assume the smallness of the linear evolution. These results provide essential technical tools that can be applied towards obtaining the extension to high dimensions of the analysis of Kenig and Merle \cite{keme06} of the dynamics of the focusing (NLW) below the energy threshold. By employing refined paraproduct estimates we also prove unconditional uniqueness of solutions for $d\ge 5$ in the natural energy class. This extends an earlier result by Furioli, Planchon and Terraneo \cite{FPT03} in dimension $d=4$.

Energy conservation and blowup of solutions for focusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies

We consider solutions of the focusing cubic and quintic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchies. We identify an observable corresponding to the average energy per particle, and we prove that it is a conserved quantity. We prove that all solutions to the focusing GP hierarchy at the $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical level blow up in finite time if the energy per particle in the initial condition is negative. Our results do not assume any factorization of the initial data.
