Well-posedness and time stepping adaptivity for a class of collocation discretisations of time-fractional subdiffusion equations

Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ are discretised in time using collocation methods, which assume that the Caputo derivative of the computed solution is piecewise-polynomial. For such discretisations of any order $m\ge 0$, with any choice of collocation points, we give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of collocation solutions. Furthermore, we investigate the applicability and performance of such schemes in the context of the a-posteriori error estimation and adaptive time stepping algorithms.

Pointwise-in-time error bounds for semilinear and quasilinear fractional subdiffusion equations on graded meshes

Time-fractional semilinear and quasilinear parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ are considered, solutions of which exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time of type $t^σ$ for any fixed $σ\in (0,1) \cup (1,2)$. The L1 scheme in time is combined with a general class of discretizations for the semilinear term. For such discretizations, we obtain sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. Both semi-discretizations in time and full discretizations using finite differences and finite elements in space are addressed. The theoretcal findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

On the solution existence for collocation discretizations of time-fractional subdiffusion equations

Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ are discretized in time using continuous collocation methods. For such discretizations, we give sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of their solutions. Two approaches are explored: the Lax-Milgram Theorem and the eigenfunction expansion. The resulting sufficient conditions, which involve certain $m\times m$ matrices (where $m$ is the order of the collocation scheme), are verified both analytically, for all $m\ge 1$ and all sets of collocation points, and computationally, for all $ m\le 20$. The semilinear case is also addressed.

Time stepping adaptation for subdiffusion problems with non-smooth right-hand sides

We consider a time-fractional subdiffusion equation with a Caputo derivative in time, a general second-order elliptic spatial operator, and a right-hand side that is non-smooth in time. The presence of the latter may lead to locking problems in our time stepping procedure recently introduced in [2,4]. Hence, a generalized version of the residual barrier is proposed to rectify the issue. We also consider related alternatives to this generalized algorithm, and, furthermore, show that this new residual barrier may be useful in the case of a negative reaction coefficient.

Error analysis for a fractional-derivative parabolic problem on quasi-graded meshes using barrier functions

An initial-boundary value problem with a Caputo time derivative of fractional order $α\in(0,1)$ is considered, solutions of which typically exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time. For this problem, we give a simple and general numerical-stability analysis using barrier functions, which yields sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on quasi-graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. L1-type and Alikhanov-type discretization in time are considered. In particular, those results imply that milder (compared to the optimal) grading yields optimal convergence rates in positive time. Semi-discretizations in time and full discretizations are addressed. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Pointwise-in-time a posteriori error control for higher-order discretizations of time-fractional parabolic equations

Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative are considered. For such equations, we explore and further develop the new methodology of the a-posteriori error estimation and adaptive time stepping proposed in [7]. We improve the earlier time stepping algorithm based on this theory, and specifically address its stable and efficient implementation in the context of high-order methods. The considered methods include an L1-2 method and continuous collocation methods of arbitrary order, for which adaptive temporal meshes are shown to yield optimal convergence rates in the presence of solution singularities.

Maximum norm a posteriori error estimates for convection-diffusion problems

We prove residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a linear scalar elliptic convection-diffusion problem that may be singularly perturbed. Similar error analysis in the energy norm by Verfürth indicates that a dual norm of the {convective derivative of the} error must be added to the natural energy norm in order for the natural residual estimator to be reliable and efficient. We show that the situation is similar for the maximum norm. In particular, we define a mesh-dependent weighted seminorm of the convective error which functions as a maximum-norm counterpart to the dual norm used in the energy norm setting. The total error is then defined as the sum of this seminorm, the maximum norm of the error, and data oscillation. The natural maximum norm residual error estimator is shown to be equivalent to this total error notion, with constant independent of singular perturbation parameters. These estimates are proved under the assumption that certain natural estimates hold for the Green's function for the problem at hand. Numerical experiments confirm that our estimators effectively capture the maximum-norm error behavior for singularly perturbed problems, and can effectively drive adaptive refinement in order to capture layer phenomena.

Green's function estimates for a 2d singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem: extended analysis

This paper presents an extended version of the article [Franz, S., Kopteva, N.: J. Differential Equations, 252 (2012)]. The main improvement compared to the latter is in that here we additionally estimate the mixed second-order derivative of the Green's function. The case of Neumann conditions along the characteristic boundaries is also addressed. A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem is posed in the unit square with a horizontal convective direction. Its solutions exhibit parabolic and exponential boundary layers. Sharp estimates of the Green's function and its first- and second-order derivatives are derived in the $L_1$ norm. The dependence of these estimates on the small diffusion parameter is shown explicitly. The obtained estimates will be used in a forthcoming numerical analysis of the considered problem.

Error analysis for time-fractional semilinear parabolic equations using upper and lower solutions

A semilinear initial-boundary value problem with a Caputo time derivative of fractional order $α\in(0,1)$ is considered, solutions of which typically exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time. For L1-type discretizations of this problem, we employ the method of upper and lower solutions to obtain sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on quasi-graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. In particular, those results imply that milder (compared to the optimal) grading yields the optimal convergence rate $2-α$ in positive time, while quasi-uniform temporal meshes yield first-order convergence in positive time. Furthermore, under appropriate conditions on the nonlinearity, the method of upper and lower solutions immediately implies that, similarly to the exact solutions, the computed solutions lie within a certain range. Semi-discretizations in time and full discretizations using finite differences and finite elements in space are addressed. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

A posteriori error analysis for variable-coefficient multiterm time-fractional subdiffusion equations

An initial-boundary value problem of subdiffusion type is considered; the temporal component of the differential operator has the form $\sum_{i=1}^{\ell}q_i(t)\, D _t ^{α_i} u(x,t)$, where the $q_i$ are continuous functions, each $D _t ^{α_i}$ is a Caputo derivative, and the $α_i$ lie in $(0,1]$. Maximum/comparison principles for this problem are proved under weak hypotheses. A new positivity result for the multinomial Mittag-Leffler function is derived. A posteriori error bounds are obtained in $L_2(Ω)$ and $L_\infty(Ω)$, where the spatial domain $Ω$ lies in $\bR^d$ with $d\in\{1,2,3\}$. An adaptive algorithm based on this theory is tested extensively and shown to yield accurate numerical solutions on the meshes generated by the algorithm.

Maximum principle for time-fractional parabolic equations with a reaction coefficient of arbitrary sign

We consider time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$. For such equations, we give an elementary proof of the weak maximum principle under no assumptions on the sign of the reaction coefficient. This proof is also extended for weak solutions, as well as for various types of boundary conditions and variable-coefficient variable-order multiterm time-fractional parabolic equations.

Pointwise-in-time a posteriori error control for time-fractional parabolic equations

For time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$, we give pointwise-in-time a posteriori error bounds in the spatial $L_2$ and $L_\infty$ norms. Hence, an adaptive mesh construction algorithm is applied for the L1 method, which yields optimal convergence rates $2-α$ in the presence of solution singularities.

Error analysis of an L2-type method on graded meshes for a fractional-order parabolic problem

An initial-boundary value problem with a Caputo time derivative of fractional order $α\in(0,1)$ is considered, solutions of which typically exhibit a singular behaviour at an initial time. An L2-type discrete fractional-derivative operator of order $3-α$ is considered on nonuniform temporal meshes. Sufficient conditions for the inverse-monotonicity of this operator are established, which yields sharp pointwise-in-time error bounds on quasi-graded temporal meshes with arbitrary degree of grading. In particular, those results imply that milder (compared to the optimal) grading yields optimal convergence rates in positive time. Semi-discretizations in time and full discretizations are addressed. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Improved energy-norm a posteriori error estimates for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems on anisotropic meshes

In the recent article [Kopteva, N., Numer. Math., 137, 607--642 (2017)] the author obtained residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for singularly perturbed semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on anisotropic triangulations. The error constants in these estimates are independent of the diameters and the aspect ratios of mesh elements and of the small perturbation parameter. The purpose of this note is to improve the weights in the jump residual part of the estimator. This is attained by using a novel sharper version of the scaled trace theorem for anisotropic elements, in which the hat basis functions are involved as weights.

Lower a posteriori error estimates on anisotropic meshes

Lower a posteriori error bounds obtained using the standard bubble function approach are reviewed in the context of anisotropic meshes. A numerical example is given that clearly demonstrates that the short-edge jump residual terms in such bounds are not sharp. Hence, for linear finite element approximations of the Laplace equation in polygonal domains, a new approach is employed to obtain essentially sharper lower a posteriori error bounds and thus to show that the upper error estimator in the recent paper [N. Kopteva, Numer. Math., 137 (2017), 607-642] is efficient on certain anisotropic meshes.

How accurate are finite elements on anisotropic triangulations in the maximum norm?

In [Kopteva, Math. Comp., 2014] a counterexample of an anisotropic triangulation was given on which the exact solution has a second-order error of linear interpolation, while the computed solution obtained using linear finite elements is only first-order pointwise accurate. This example was given in the context of a singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equation. In this paper, we present further examples of unanticipated pointwise convergence behaviour of Lagrange finite elements on anisotropic triangulations. In particular, we show that linear finite elements may exhibit lower than expected orders of convergence for the Laplace equation, as well as for certain singular equations, and their accuracy depends not only on the linear interpolation error, but also on the mesh topology. Furthermore, we demonstrate that pointwise convergence rates which are worse than one might expect are also observed when higher-order finite elements are employed on anisotropic meshes. A theoretical justification will be given for some of the observed numerical phenomena.
