Quantum vortex channels as Josephson junctions

In quantum gases, weak links are typically realized with externally imposed optical potentials. We show that, in rotating binary condensates, quantized vortices in one component form hollow channels that act as self-induced weak links for the other, enabling superflow through otherwise impenetrable, phase-separated domains. This introduces a novel barrier mechanism: quantum pressure creates an effective barrier inside the vortex channel, set by the constriction width, which controls the superflow. Tuning the interspecies interaction strength drives a crossover from the hydrodynamic transport to Josephson tunneling regime. Long-range dipolar interactions further tune the weak-link properties, enabling both short links and two coupled junctions in series. Circuit models quantitatively capture the dc current-phase relations for both configurations. These results establish vortices as reconfigurable, interaction-controlled Josephson elements in superfluids.

Rotational Superradiance in a Time-Reversal Symmetry-Broken Quantum Gas inside an Optical Cavity

Appearance of quantized vortices in a superfluid and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) stems from their nontrivial response to broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Here we show that breaking of the TRS by, for example, rotation or an external synthetic magnetic field in a transversely-driven BEC coupled to a single mode of an optical cavity modifies drastically Dicke-superradiance and self-ordering phenomena in this system. In particular, photon scattering from the pump laser into the cavity is amplified by the rotational motion of the BEC, leading to so-called 'rotational superradiance' - in a loose analogy to black-hole physics - with distinct critical scaling properties. Another notable finding is that cavity photons mediate long-range, periodic attractive interactions among the vortices, which compete with pair-wise logarithmic repulsive vortex interactions and deform the Abrikosov triangular vortex lattice favoring a stripe-like pattern. Remarkably, the rotation of the BEC and topological properties of the vortex lattice can be monitored nondestructively through the cavity output field.

Tuning photon-mediated interactions in a multimode cavity: from supersolid to insulating droplets hosting phononic excitations

Ultracold atoms trapped in laser-generated optical lattices serve as a versatile platform for quantum simulations. However, as these lattices are infinitely stiff, they do not allow to emulate phonon degrees of freedom. This restriction can be lifted in emerged optical lattices inside multimode cavities. Motivated by recent experimental progress in multimode cavity QED, we propose a scheme to implement and study supersolid and droplet states with phonon-like lattice excitations by coupling a Bose gas to many longitudinal modes of a ring cavity. The interplay between contact collisional and tunable-range cavity-mediated interactions leads to a rich phase diagram, which includes elastic supersolid as well as insulating droplet phases exhibiting roton-type mode softening for a continuous range of momenta across the superradiant phase transition. The non-trivial dynamic response of the system to local density perturbations further proves the existence of phonon-like modes.

Spin and density self-ordering in dynamic polarization gradients fields

We study the zero-temperature quantum phase diagram for a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity. The two atomic spin states are Raman coupled by two transverse orthogonally-polarized, blue detuned plane-wave lasers inducing a repulsive cavity potential. For weak pump the lasers favor a state with homogeneous density and predefined uniform spin direction. When one pump laser is polarized parallel to the cavity mode polarization, the photons coherently scattered into the resonator induce a polarization gradient along the cavity axis, which mediates long-range density-density, spin-density, and spin-spin interactions. We show that the coupled atom-cavity system implements central aspects of the $t$-$J$-$V$-$W$ model with a rich phase diagram. At the mean-field limit we identify at least four qualitatively distinct density- and spin-ordered phases including ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic order along the cavity axis, which can be controlled via the pump strength and detuning. A real time observation of amplitude and phase of the emitted fields bears strong signatures of the realized phase and allows for real-time determination of phase transition lines. Together with measurements of the population imbalance most properties of the phase diagram can be reconstructed.

Modified gravitational collapse, or the wonders of the MOND

There are many hot discussions in the literature about two competing paradigms in galactic and extra-galactic astronomy and cosmology, namely the Dark Matter and the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). It is very difficult to challenge MOND from the cosmological side because a full relativistic realisation is needed in the first place, and any failure can then be attributed to a particular model, and not to the MOND itself. We propose to study non-relativistic stages of gravitational collapse in MOND which, we argue, is a relevant task for this competition. Spherically symmetric dust cloud collapse and intrinsic unavoidable non-linearities of the deep MOND regime are discussed. We conclude that complicated, both numerical and analytic, studies of modified gravitational dynamics are needed in order to assess the viability of MOND.
