The effect of side chain length on the mesomorphic properties of ferroelectric nematogens

The discovery of ferroelectric nematic phase opened new directions in the field of soft matter chemistry and physics. In this paper, we have modified a previously reported ferroelectric nematogen based on molecular structure with dimethylamino-terminated part. We have prepared two new homologues by prolonging a side chain and investigated the effect of its length on the mesomorphic properties. While previously reported homologues exhibited a direct phase transition from the isotropic (Iso) to the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF), for prolonged alkyl chain there is a narrow nematic phase (N) in between. For new compounds, we have established their mesomorphic and material properties. We have confirmed ferroelectricity of the NF phase by the polarization, SHG signal and permittivity. Finally, we have compared these parameters with respect to the side-chain length and discussed new effects, discovered for prolonged homologues due to the presence of an additional N phase.

The effect of fluorine or chlorine substitution on mesomorphic properties of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) represents an attractive and foremost field of liquid crystals, combining fluidity with ferroelectricity. NF materials exhibit large polarization values and remarkable non-linear optical properties. We have designed an original molecular structure with halogen substituents in the position of an electron donating group. In a prolonged molecular core, such a modification led to the presence of the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) below the nematic one. Besides, an application of Cl atom in the molecular core of one of the presented materials has been utilized for the first time for ferroelectric nematogens. We have examined mesogenic behaviour and ferroelectric characteristics of the NF phase. In the NF phase for the cell with antiparallel rubbing, we have detected a textural transformation, which evidences strong polar character of anchoring at the surfaces. The presented results provide valuable insight into the design of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystalline compounds.

The role of terminal groups in non-chiral rod-like compounds on the formation of polar fluids

The emergence of ferroelectric mesophases in non-chiral liquid crystal (LCs) has sparked fundamental interest in the molecular mechanisms governing polarity. In this study, we investigate how terminal molecular groups influence the formation and stability of polar phases by analyzing six compounds from three homologous series. Specifically, we compare newly synthesized homologs with a nitro group, which predominantly exhibit polar mesophases, to previously reported structurally related analogs containing either a cyano group or a fluorine atom as terminal fragment. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations provide insights into electronic surface potential (ESP) distributions, revealing alternating regions of positive and negative charge density along the molecular axis, consistent with Madhusudana model of polar phase stabilization. We propose the ESP-derived parameter quantifying terminal electrostatic charge, revealing a direct correlation between the negative to positive charge ratio at the molecular termini and the formation of ferroelectric or antiferroelectric mesophases. To validate this hypothesis, we analyze the molecular structure-mesomorphic behavior relationship of other known non-chiral compounds that exhibit polar phases, demonstrating the critical role of terminal groups in determining mesophase polarity. Our findings enhance the understanding of the molecular origins of ferroelectricity in non-chiral LCs, paving the way for the rational design of next-generation functional polar soft materials.

Tunable macroscopic defect patterns induced by a low-frequency AC electric field in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Regulation of topological structures and pattern formation is attracting wide interest in the field of condensed matter. Liquid crystals (LCs) represent soft matter with a remarkable combination of fluidity and anisotropic properties. Topological defects may appear in confined LCs under external stimuli. Recently discovered ferroelectric nematics (NF) opened exceptional opportunities in technologies owing to high permittivity and polarisation. Polar properties of NF supply more variability to topological structures. In this research, we present tunable 2D topological defect arrays in NF compound, induced by an alternating (AC) electric field in simple sandwich cells without pre-patterning. The observed arrays of defects form pseudo-square lattices, which character and periodicity depend on the frequency of the applied field and partially on the cell thickness. The observed effect is explained to occur due to the competition between elastic and electrical forces. The proposed system can be useful to create reconfigurable spatially periodic polarisation structures.

Polar Nematic Phases with Enantiotropic Ferro- and Antiferroelectric Behavior

The recent discovery of a new ferroelectric nematic (NF) liquid crystalline phase became of utmost interest for the liquid crystal (LC) and the whole soft and condensed matter fields. Contrary to the previously known ferroelectric LC materials, whose ferroelectric characteristics were much weaker, new polar nematics exhibit properties comparable to solid ferroelectrics. This discovery brought about tremendous efforts to further explore compounds showing these phases, and fascinating physical properties have been reported. Herein, we present the first synthesized compounds with the enantiotropic ferro- (NF) and antiferroelectric (NX) nematic phases. The enantiotropic nature and an unprecedentedly broad temperature range of NF and NX phases are confirmed by various experimental techniques: polarized-light optical microscopy (POM) observations, different scanning calorimetry (DSC), dielectric spectroscopy, second harmonic generation (SHG), and molecular modeling. The presented achievements in designing achiral compounds that exhibit enantiotropic polar nematic phases with ferro- and antiferroelectric properties significantly contribute to the development of multicomponent mixtures with a broad temperature range of NF and NX phases down to room temperature. Furthermore, this accomplishment considerably enhances the general understanding of the structural correlations that promote polar nematic liquid crystal phases with high thermodynamic stability. Finally, this work may benefit various applications in photonic devices.

Tilt or twist-competing synclinic and anticlinic interactions in SmC phases of bent-core mesogens

Recent liquid-crystalline (LC) research is focused on structurally new molecular systems distinct from simple nematic or smectic phases. Sophisticated molecular shape may reveal structural complexity, combining helicity and polarity. Achiral symmetry-breaking in bent-core molecules leads to propensity for synclinic and anticlinic molecular structures within consecutive smectic layers. Moreover, despite their achiral character, dimers readily adopt helical phases. In our study, we investigated a hybrid molecular structure incorporating both characteristics, namely a rigid-bent core and an attached bulky polar group via a flexible spacer. To perform phase identification, we enriched the standard experimental methods with the sophisticated resonant soft x-ray scattering. Notably, we have observed a distinct preference for specific phase types depending on the length of the homologue. Longer homologues exhibit a predisposition towards the formation of tilted smectic phases, characterized by complex sequences of synclinic and anticlinic interfaces. Conversely, shorter homologues manifest a propensity for helical smectic structures. For intermediate homologues, the frustration is alleviated through the formation of several modulated smectic phases. Based on the presented research, we describe the preconditions for high level structures in relation with conflicting constraints.

Twisted domains in ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals

Ferroelectric nematics present properties promising for applications, which strongly depend on the confinement conditions and the presence of defects. In this work, we have observed and analysed textures in the cells with homogeneous geometry for a ferroelectric nematogen. The studied compound reveals the ferroelectric nematic phase, NF, directly on cooling from the isotropic phase. The NF phase is stable and persists down to the room temperatures. Textures in the homogeneous cell with antiparallel alignment prefer to be arranged in twisted domains with borderlines oriented preferentially in the perpendicular direction with respect to the surface alignment (rubbing direction). We have described these domains and developed a model of 2/pi disclinations, which are separating the areas with an opposite twist sense. We discussed the character of disclination charge and explained why these disclination lines prefer to be oriented perpendicularly to the rubbing direction.

Undulations of smectic A layers in achiral liquid crystals manifested as stripe textures

Self-assembly of organic molecules represents a fascinating playground to create various liquid crystalline (LC) nanostructures. In this work, we study layer undulations on micrometer scale in smectic A phases for achiral compounds, experimentally demonstrated as regular stripe patterns induced by thermal treatment. Undulations including their anharmonic properties are evaluated by means of polarimetric imaging and light diffraction experiments in cells with various thicknesses. The key role in stripe formation is played by high negative values of the thermal expansion coefficient.

Dimethylamino terminated ferroelectric nematogens revealing high permittivity

Since the recent discoveries, ferroelectric nematics became of upmost interest due to their outstanding ferroelectric properties. In this work, we prepared a series of polar molecules revealing a ferroelectric nematic phase (NF) with a very high dielectric constant (>104). A new motif, which differs from previously reported molecular structures, was optimized to support the NF phase. For all homologues the NF phase was observed directly on the cooling from the isotropic phase and ferroelectric behaviour was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy, second harmonic generation, polarization current measurements and by analysis of textures in the polarized light. The presented materials combine ferroelectricity with giant permittivity in a fluid media at room temperatures, so they appear to be extremely attractive. Polarity of molecules with the strong susceptibility to the electric field represent high potential for various applications in energy-efficient memory devices or capacitors.
