Spectral invariants for discrete Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

The aim of this article is to present a complete system of Floquet spectral invariants for the discrete Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic graphs. These invariants are polynomials in the potential and determined by cycles in the quotient graph from some specific cycle sets. We discuss some properties of these invariants and give an explicit expression for the linear and quadratic (in the potential) Floquet spectral invariants. The constructed system of spectral invariants can be used to study the sets of isospectral periodic potentials for the Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs. In particular, we deduce that under certain assumptions, if a real potential is isospectral to the zero (respectively, "degree") potential, then it must be the zero (respectively, "degree") potential.

On the measure of spectra for discrete Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators $H_{μQ}=Δ+μQ$ with real periodic potentials $Q$ on periodic graphs, where $Δ$ is the adjacency operator and $μ\in\mathbb R$ is a coupling constant. The spectra of the operators consist of a finite number of closed intervals (bands). In the large coupling regime, we obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the measure of the spectrum of $H_{μQ}$ which depends essentially on a "degeneracy degree" of the potential $Q$. This result extends the result of Y. Last obtained for the one-dimensional lattice $\mathbb Z$ to the case of general periodic graphs. It also may serve as a certain quantitative complement to the recent criterion of J. Fillman for the measure of the spectrum of $H_{μQ}$ to go to zero as $μ\to\infty$.

Spectrum of Schrödinger operators on subcovering graphs

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with real periodic potentials on periodic graphs. The spectra of the operators consist of a finite number of bands. By "rolling up" a periodic graph along some appropriate directions we obtain periodic graphs of smaller dimensions called subcovering graphs. For example, rolling up a planar hexagonal lattice along different directions will lead to nanotubes with various chiralities. We describe connections between spectra of the Schrödinger operators on a periodic graph and its subcoverings. In particular, we provide a simple criterion for the subcovering graph to be isospectral to the original periodic graph. By isospectrality of periodic graphs we mean that the spectra of the Schrödinger operators on the graphs consist of the same number of bands and the corresponding bands coincide as sets. We also obtain asymptotics of the band edges of the Schrödinger operator on the subcovering graph as the "chiral" (roll up) vectors are long enough.

Asymptotic isospectrality of Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic graphs. Their spectra consist of a finite number of bands. We perturb a periodic graph by adding edges in a periodic way (without changing the vertex set) and show that if the added edges are long enough, then the perturbed graph is asymptotically isospectral to some periodic graph of a higher dimension but without long edges. We also obtain a criterion for the perturbed graph to be not only asymptotically isospectral but just isospectral to this higher dimensional periodic graph. One of the simplest examples of such asymptotically isospectral periodic graphs is the square lattice perturbed by long edges and the cubic lattice. We also get asymptotics of the endpoints of the spectral bands for the Schrödinger operator on the perturbed graph as the length of the added edges tends to infinity.

Trace formulas for magnetic Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs and their applications

We consider Schrödinger operators with periodic magnetic and electric potentials on periodic discrete graphs. The spectrum of such operators consists of a finite number of bands. We determine trace formulas for the magnetic Schrödinger operators. The traces of the fiber operators are expressed as finite Fourier series of the quasimomentum. The coefficients of the Fourier series are given in terms of the magnetic fluxes, electric potentials and cycles in the quotient graph from some specific cycle sets. Using the trace formulas we obtain new lower estimates of the total bandwidth for the magnetic Schrödinger operator in terms of geometric parameters of the graph, magnetic fluxes and electric potentials. We show that these estimates are sharp.

Two-sided estimates of total bandwidth for Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic discrete graphs. Their spectrum consists of a finite number of bands. We obtain two-sided estimates of the total bandwidth for the Schrödinger operators in terms of geometric parameters of the graph and the potentials. In particular, we show that these estimates are sharp. It means that these estimates become identities for specific graphs and potentials. The proof is based on the Floquet theory and trace formulas for fiber operators. The traces are expressed as finite Fourier series of the quasimomentum with coefficients depending on the potentials and cycles of the quotient graph from some specific cycle sets. In order to obtain our results we estimate these Fourier coefficients in terms of geometric parameters of the graph and the potentials.

Trace formulas for Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic discrete graphs. Their spectrum consists of a finite number of bands. We determine trace formulas for the Schrödinger operators. The proof is based on the decomposition of the Schrödinger operators into a direct integral and a specific representation of fiber operators. The traces of the fiber operators are expressed as finite Fourier series of the quasimomentum. The coefficients of the Fourier series are given in terms of the potentials and cycles in the quotient graph from some specific cycle sets. We also present the trace formulas for the heat kernel and the resolvent of the Schrödinger operators and the determinant formulas.

On continuous spectrum of magnetic Schrödinger operators on periodic discrete graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators with periodic electric and magnetic potentials on periodic discrete graphs. The spectrum of such operators consists of an absolutely continuous (a.c.) part (a union of a finite number of non-degenerate bands) and a finite number of eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We prove the following results: 1) the a.c. spectrum of the magnetic Schrödinger operators is empty for specific graphs and magnetic fields; 2) we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which the a.c. spectrum of the magnetic Schrödinger operators is empty; 3) the spectrum of the magnetic Schrödinger operator with each magnetic potential $tα$, where $t$ is a coupling constant, has an a.c. component for all except finitely many $t$ from any bounded interval.

Scattering on periodic metric graphs

We consider the Laplacian on a periodic metric graph and obtain its decomposition into a direct fiber integral in terms of the corresponding discrete Laplacian. Eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the fiber metric Laplacian are expressed explicitly in terms of eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the corresponding fiber discrete Laplacian and eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet problem on the unit interval. We show that all these eigenfunctions are uniformly bounded. We apply these results to the periodic metric Laplacian perturbed by real integrable potentials. We prove the following: a) the wave operators exist and are complete, b) the standard Fredholm determinant is well-defined and is analytic in the upper half-plane without any modification for any dimension, c) the determinant and the corresponding S-matrix satisfy the Birman-Krein identity.

Invariants of magnetic Laplacians on periodic graphs

We consider a magnetic Laplacian with periodic magnetic potentials on periodic discrete graphs. Its spectrum consists of a finite number of bands, where degenerate bands are eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We obtain a specific decomposition of the magnetic Laplacian into a direct integral in terms of minimal forms. A minimal form is a periodic function defined on edges of the periodic graph with a minimal support on the period. It is crucial that fiber magnetic Laplacians (matrices) have the minimal number of coefficients depending on the quasimomentum and the minimal number of coefficients depending on the magnetic potential. We show that these numbers are invariants for the magnetic Laplacians on periodic graphs. Using this decomposition, we estimate the position of each band, the Lebesgue measure of the magnetic Laplacian spectrum and a variation of the spectrum under a perturbation by a magnetic field in terms of these invariants and minimal forms. In addition, we consider an inverse problem: we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for matrices depending on the quasimomentum on a finite graph to be fiber magnetic Laplacians. Moreover, similar results for magnetic Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials are obtained.

Schrödinger operators with guided potentials on periodic graphs

We consider discrete Schrödinger operators with periodic potentials on periodic graphs perturbed by guided non-positive potentials, which are periodic in some directions and finitely supported in other ones. The spectrum of the unperturbed operator is a union of a finite number of non-degenerate bands and eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We show that the spectrum of the perturbed operator consists of the unperturbed one plus the additional guided spectrum, which is a union of a finite number of bands. We estimate the position of the guided bands and their length in terms of graph geometric parameters. We also determine the asymptotics of the guided bands for large guided potentials. Moreover, we show that the possible number of the guided bands, their length and position can be rather arbitrary for some specific potentials.

Laplacians on periodic graphs with guides

We consider Laplace operators on periodic discrete graphs perturbed by guides, i.e., graphs which are periodic in some directions and finite in other ones. The spectrum of the Laplacian on the unperturbed graph is a union of a finite number of non-degenerate bands and eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We show that the spectrum of the perturbed Laplacian consists of the unperturbed one plus the additional so-called guided spectrum which is a union of a finite number of bands. We estimate the position of the guided bands and their length in terms of geometric parameters of the graph. We also determine the asymptotics of the guided bands for guides with large multiplicity of edges. Moreover, we show that the possible number of guided bands, their length and position can be rather arbitrary for some specific periodic graphs with guides.

Magnetic Schrödinger operators on periodic discrete graphs

We consider magnetic Schrödinger operators with periodic magnetic and electric potentials on periodic discrete graphs. The spectrum of the operators consists of an absolutely continuous part (a union of a finite number of non-degenerate bands) plus a finite number of flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We estimate the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum in terms of the Betti numbers and show that these estimates become identities for specific graphs. We estimate a variation of the spectrum of the Schrödinger operators under a perturbation by a magnetic field in terms of magnetic fluxes. The proof is based on Floquet theory and a precise representation of fiber magnetic Schrödinger operators constructed in the paper.

Effective masses for Laplacians on periodic graphs

We consider Laplacians on periodic both discrete and metric equilateral graphs. Their spectrum consists of an absolutely continuous part (which is a union of non-degenerate spectral bands) and flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. We estimate effective masses associated with the ends of each spectral band in terms of geometric parameters of graphs. Moreover, in the case of the beginning of the spectrum we determine two-sided estimates of the effective mass in terms of geometric parameters of graphs. The proof is based on the Floquet theory, the factorization of fiber operators, the perturbation theory and the relation between effective masses for Laplacians on discrete and metric graphs, obtained in our paper.

Spectral band bracketing for Laplacians on periodic metric graphs

We consider Laplacians on periodic metric graphs with unit-length edges. The spectrum of these operators consists of an absolutely continuous part (which is a union of an infinite number of non-degenerated spectral bands) plus an infinite number of flat bands, i.e., eigenvalues of infinite multiplicity. Our main result is a localization of spectral bands in terms of eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann operators on a fundamental domain of the periodic graph. The proof is based on the spectral band localization for discrete Laplacians and on the relation between the spectra of discrete and metric Laplacians.

Spectral band localization for Schrödinger operators on periodic graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators on periodic discrete graphs. It is known that the spectrum of these operators has band structure. We obtain a localization of spectral bands in terms of eigenvalues of Dirichlet and Neumann operators on a finite graph, which is constructed from the fundamental cell of the periodic graph. The proof is based on the Floquet decomposition of Schrödinger operators and the minimax principle.
