Strong and variable stratospheric CO emission from lava-planet 55 Cnc e observed with NIRCam/JWST

Some rocky planets orbit so close to their host stars that stellar heating melts their surfaces. They offer a rare glimpse of planets in a magma-ocean state, providing an observable analogue to processes that likely shaped the early Earth and other terrestrial planets during their infancy. Recent JWST observations of five eclipses of the prototypical lava planet 55 Cnc e have confirmed earlier hints that it exhibits highly variable thermal emission, with low-resolution spectroscopy pointing to a possible volatile-rich atmosphere likely rich in CO and CO2. Here we report on an analysis of the same JWST datasets but at their native spectral resolution, utilizing cross-correlation techniques. An unambiguously strong ~8 sigma signal from CO in emission is recovered during one out of five epochs, with potential ~3 sigma detections during two others. The strongest observed cross-correlation signal is difficult to reconcile with a hydrostatic atmosphere, requiring a steep and strong thermal inversion at the right pressure level (~1-10 mbar) and a relative abundance of CO2 that is at least 3 orders of magnitude lower which would otherwise mask the CO signal. Self-consistent atmospheric modelling indicates that this is most readily achieved in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, which produces the steepest inversions and highest CO/CO2 ratios. The pronounced epoch-to-epoch variability suggests that the CO signal does not trace a static atmosphere alone, but may reveal a transient, dynamically active component, potentially linked to variable atmospheric outflow.

JWST high-contrast spectroscopy with speckle modelling: Atmospheric retrievals of the T dwarf companion HD 19467 B

High-contrast, medium-resolution spectroscopy with JWST can resolve molecular and isotopic features in cool substellar atmospheres, but for close-in companions the extracted spectra can be biased by wavelength-dependent residual stellar contamination. We assess the impact of residual speckles on atmospheric inference for the T dwarf companion HD 19467 B and compare the results to the field T dwarf 2MASS J0415-0935. We analyse JWST/NIRSpec G395H spectra ($2.87$--$5.2$$\mu$m; $R\sim2700$) and perform Bayesian atmospheric retrievals with petitRADTRANS coupled to nested sampling using ultranest. We use a flexible, parameterised pressure-temperature profile with free, constant-with-altitude molecular abundances. For HD 19467 B we fit the PSF-subtracted spectrum with a linear model that includes the atmospheric model and a set of speckle spectra from the integral field unit. We detect H$_2$O, CH$_4$, CO, CO$_2$, and NH$_3$ in both atmospheres and measure carbon isotopic ratios from CO isotopologues, finding $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C$=154^{+19}_{-17}$ for HD 19467 B and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C$=85\pm5$ for 2MASS J0415-0935. Speckle contamination primarily affects the low-frequency spectral shape at $3.0$--$3.7$$\mu$m and can affect retrieved abundances if not accounted for. We obtain seemingly constrained posteriors for some additional species (e.g.\ SiO and H$_2$S) in some cases, but treat these as tentative because cross-correlation does not yield significant detections; PH$_3$ is not detected in either target. Joint fitting of the atmospheric spectrum and the speckle contamination enables native-resolution retrievals of the high-contrast companion HD 19467 B with JWST/NIRSpec without continuum subtraction. Over $2.87$--$5.2$$\mu$m, medium-resolution spectroscopy constrains elemental and isotopic composition; both objects exhibit near-solar metallicity and subsolar C/O ratios.

Peering above the clouds of the warm Neptune GJ 436b with CRIRES+

Exoplanets with masses between Earth and Neptune are amongst the most commonly observed, yet their properties are poorly constrained. Their transmission spectra are often featureless, which indicate either high-altitude clouds or a high atmospheric metallicity. The archetypical warm Neptune GJ 436b is such a planet showing a flat transmission spectrum in observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Ground-based high-resolution spectroscopy (HRS) effectively probes exoplanet atmospheres at higher altitudes and can therefore be more sensitive to absorption coming from above potential cloud decks. In this paper we aim to investigate this for the exoplanet GJ 436b. We present new CRIRES+ HRS transit data of GJ 436b. Three transits were observed, but since two were during bad weather conditions, only one transit was analyzed. The radiative transfer code petitRADTRANS was used to create atmospheric models for cross-correlation and signal-injection purposes, including absorption from H$_2$O, CH$_4$, and CO. No transmission signals were detected, but atmospheric constraints can be derived. Injection of artificial transmission signals indicate that if GJ 436b would have a cloud deck at pressures P>10 mbar and a <300$\times$ solar metallicity, these CRIRES+ observations should have resulted in a detection. We estimate that the constraints presented here from one ground-based HRS transit are slightly better than those obtained with four HST transits. Combining HRS data from multiple transits is an interesting avenue for future studies of exoplanets with high-altitude clouds.

Ages, metallicity, and alpha-enhancement of the globular cluster populations in NGC 3311

Aims. We aim to investigate the stellar population properties, ages, and metal content of the globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 3311, the central galaxy of the Hydra I cluster, to better constrain its evolution history. Methods. We used integral-field spectroscopic data from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) to identify 680 sources in the central region of NGC 3311 and extract their 1D spectra. An analysis of these sources in terms of morphologies, radial velocities, and emission lines allowed us to narrow down our selection to 49 bona fide GC candidates. We split these candidates into two groups depending on their projected distance to the galaxy center (R), namely inner (R<20arcsec) and outer (R>20arcsec) GCs. We stacked the extracted 1D spectra of the inner and outer GC populations to increase the signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns) of the resulting spectra and hence allow full-spectrum fitting. In addition, we also created a stacked spectrum of all GCs in NGC 3311 and one of the two most central GC candidates. Using the code pPXF, we performed a stellar population analysis on the four stacked 1D spectra, obtaining mass-weighted integrated ages, metallicities, and [$α$/Fe] abundances. Results. All GCs are old, with ages >13.5 Gyr, and they have super-solar metallicities. Looking at the color distribution, we find that the inner ones tend to be redder and more metal rich than the outer ones. This is consistent with the two-phase formation scenario. Looking at the full-spectral fitting results, at face value the outer GCs have a larger [$α$/Fe] ratio, which is in line with what is found for the stars that dominate the surface brightness profile at the same radii. However, the values for outer and inner GCs are consistent within the uncertainties.

The $ρ$ Oph region revisited with Gaia EDR3

Context. Young and embedded stellar populations are important probes of the star formation process. Paradoxically, we have a better census of nearby embedded young populations than the slightly more evolved optically visible young populations. The high accuracy measurements and all-sky coverage of Gaia data are about to change this situation. Aims. This work aims to construct the most complete sample to date of YSOs in the $ρ$ Oph region. Methods. We compile a catalog of 1114 Ophiuchus YSOs from the literature and crossmatch it with the Gaia EDR3, Gaia-ESO and APOGEE-2 surveys. We apply a multivariate classification algorithm to this catalog to identify new, co-moving population candidates. Results. We find 191 new high-fidelity YSO candidates in the Gaia EDR3 catalog belonging to the $ρ$ Oph region. The new sources appear to be mainly Class III M-stars and substellar objects and are less extincted than the known members. We find 28 previously unknown sources with disks. The analysis of the proper motion distribution of the entire sample reveals a well-defined bimodality, implying two distinct populations sharing a similar 3D volume. The first population comprises young stars' clusters around the $ρ$ Ophiuchi star and the main Ophiuchus clouds (L1688, L1689, L1709). In contrast, the second population is older ($\sim$ 10 Myr), dispersed, has a distinct proper motion, and is possibly from the Upper Sco group. The two populations are moving away from each other at about 4.1 km/s, and will no longer overlap in about 4 Myr. Finally, we flag 17 sources in the literature as impostors, which are sources that exhibit large deviations from the average distance and proper motion properties of the $ρ$ Oph population. Our results show the importance of accurate 3D space and motion information for improved stellar population analysis. (Abridged)
