Ricci Flow in Two Dimensions

Ricci flow on two dimensional surfaces is far simpler than in the higher dimensional cases. This presents an opportunity to obtain much more detailed and comprehensive results. We review the basic facts about this flow, including the original results by Hamilton and Chow concerning Ricci flow on compact surfaces. The rationale for this paper, however, is especially to survey recent work concerning this flow on open surfaces, including various classes of both complete and incomplete surfaces, where a number of striking new phenomena have been observed.

Blow-up rate of the mean curvature during the mean curvature flow and a gap theorem for self-shrinkers

In this paper, we prove that the mean curvature blows up at the same rate as the second fundamental form at the first singular time $T$ of any compact, Type I mean curvature flow. For the mean curvature flow of surfaces, we obtain similar result provided that the Gaussian density is less than two. Our proofs are based on continuous rescaling and the classification of self-shrinkers. We show that all notions of singular sets defined in \cite{St} coincide for any Type I mean curvature flow, thus generalizing the result of Stone who established that for any mean convex Type I Mean curvature flow. We also establish a gap theorem for self-shrinkers.

Remarks on curvature behavior at the first singular time of the Ricci flow

In this paper, we study curvature behavior at the first singular time of solution to the Ricci flow on a smooth, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g_{ij} = -2R_{ij}$ for $t\in [0,T)$. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type I singularities at $T$, using Perelman's $\mathcal{W}$-functional, we show that suitable blow-ups of our evolving metrics converge in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov sense to a Gaussian shrinker. If the flow has uniformly bounded scalar curvature and develops Type II singularities at $T$, we show that suitable scalings of the potential functions in Perelman's entropy functional converge to a positive constant on a complete, Ricci flat manifold. We also show that if the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded along the flow in certain integral sense then the flow either develops a type II singularity at $T$ or it can be smoothly extended past time $T$.

Ricci flow on asymptotically conical surfaces with nontrivial topology

As part of the general investigation of Ricci flow on complete surfaces with finite total curvature, we study this flow for surfaces with asymptotically conical (which includes as a special case asymptotically Euclidean) geometries. After establishing long-time existence, and in particular the fact that the flow preserves the asymptotically conic geometry, we prove that the solution metric $g(t)$ expands at a locally uniform linear rate; moreover, the rescaled family of metrics $t^{-1}g(t)$ exhibits a transition at infinite time inasmuch as it converges locally uniformly to a complete, finite area hyperbolic metric which is the unique uniformizing metric in the conformal class of the initial metric $g_0$.

The mean curvature at the first singular time of the mean curvature flow

Consider a family of smooth immersions $F(\cdot,t): M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ moving by the mean curvature flow $\frac{\partial F(p,t)}{\partial t} = -H(p,t)\cdot ν(p,t)$, for $t\in [0,T)$. We prove that the mean curvature blows up at the first singular time $T$ if all singularities are of type I. In the case $n = 2$, regardless of the type of a possibly forming singularity, we show that at the first singular time the mean curvature necessarily blows up provided that either the Multiplicity One Conjecture holds or the Gaussian density is less than two. We also establish and give several applications of a local regularity theorem which is a parabolic analogue of Choi-Schoen estimate for minimal submanifolds.

Ricci flow on surfaces with cusps

We consider the normalized Ricci flow $\del_t g = (ρ- R)g$ with initial condition a complete metric $g_0$ on an open surface $M$ where $M$ is conformal to a punctured compact Riemann surface and $g_0$ has ends which are asymptotic to hyperbolic cusps. We prove that when $χ(M) < 0$ and $ρ< 0$, the flow $g(t)$ converges exponentially to the unique complete metric of constant Gauss curvature $ρ$ in the conformal class.

On the extension of the mean curvature flow

Consider a family of smooth immersions $F(\cdot,t): M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ moving by the mean curvature flow $\frac{\partial F(p,t)}{\partial t} = -H(p,t)\cdot ν(p,t)$, for $t\in [0,T)$. In \cite{Cooper} Cooper has recently proved that the mean curvature blows up at the singular time $T$. We show that if the second fundamental form stays bounded from below all the way to $T$, then the scaling invariant mean curvature integral bound is enough to extend the flow past time $T$, and this integral bound is optimal in some sense explained below.

On the evolution of convex hypersurfaces by the $Q_k$ flow

We prove the existence and uniqueness of a $C^{1,1}$ solution of the $Q_k$ flow in the viscosity sense for compact convex hypersurfaces $Σ_t$ embedded in $R^{n+1}$ ($n \geq 2$) . In particular, for compact convex hypersurfaces with flat sides we show that, under a certain non-degeneracy initial condition, the interface separating the flat from the strictly convex side, becomes smooth, and it moves by the $Q_{k-1}$ flow at least for a short time.

The Poisson equation on complete manifolds with positive spectrum and applications

In this paper we investigate the existence of a solution to the Poisson equation on complete manifolds with positive spectrum and Ricci curvature bounded from below. We show that if a function $f$ has decay $f=O(r^{-1-\varepsilon}) $ for some $\varepsilon >0,$ where $r$ is the distance function to a fixed point, then the Poisson equation $Δu=f$ has a solution $u$ with at most exponential growth. We apply this result on the Poisson equation to study the existence of harmonic maps between complete manifolds and also existence of Hermitian Einstein metrics on holomorphic vector bundles over complete manifolds, thus extending some results of Li-Tam and Ni. Assuming that the manifold is simply connected and of Ricci curvature between two negative constants, we can prove that in fact the Poisson equation has a bounded solution and we apply this result to the Ricci flow on complete surfaces.

The harmonic mean curvature flow of nonconvex surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider a compact, star-shaped, mean convex hypersurface $Σ^2\subset \mathbb{R}^3$. We prove that in some cases the flow exists until it shrinks to a point in a spherical manner, which is very typical for convex surfaces as well (see \cite{An1}). We also prove that in the case we have a surface of revolution which is star-shaped and mean convex, a smooth solution always exists up to some finite time $T < \infty$ at which the flow shrinks to a point asymptotically spherically.

Classification of compact ancient solutions to the curve shortening flow

We consider an embedded convex ancient solution $Γ_t$ to the curve shortening flow in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that there are only two possibilities: the family $Γ_t$ is either the family of contracting circles, which is a type I ancient solution, or the family of evolving Angenent ovals, which correspond to a type II ancient solution to the curve shortening flow. We also give a necessary and sufficient curvature condition for an embedded, closed ancient solution to the curve shortening flow to be convex.

Compactness results for the Kähler-Ricci flow

We consider the Kähler-Ricci flow $\frac{\partial}{\partial t}g_{i\bar{j}} = g_{i\bar{j}} - R_{i\bar{j}}$ on a compact Kähler manifold $M$ with $c_1(M) > 0$, of complex dimension $k$. We prove the $ε$-regularity lemma for the Kähler-Ricci flow, based on Moser's iteration. Assume that the Ricci curvature and $\int_M |\rem|^k dV_t$ are uniformly bounded along the flow. Using the $ε$-regularity lemma we derive the compactness result for the Kähler-Ricci flow. Under our assumptions, if $k \ge 3$ in addition, using the compactness result we show that $|\rem| \le C$ holds uniformly along the flow. This means the flow does not develop any singularities at infinity. We use some ideas of Tian from \cite{Ti} to prove the smoothing property in that case.

On the extinction profile of solutions to fast-diffusion

We study the extinction behavior of solutions to the fast diffusion equation $u_t = Δu^m$ on $\R^N\times (0,T)$, in the range of exponents $m \in (0, \frac{N-2}{N})$, $N > 2$. We show that if the initial data $u_0$ is trapped in between two Barenblatt solutions vanishing at time $T$, then the vanishing behaviour of $u$ at $T$ is given by a Barenblatt solution. We also give an example showing that for such a behavior the bound from above by a Barenblatt solution $B$ (vanishing at $T$) is crucial: we construct a class of solutions $u$ with initial data $u_0 = B (1 + o(1))$, near $ |x| >> 1$, which live longer than $B$ and change behaviour at $T$. The behavior of such solutions is governed by $B(\cdot,t)$ up to $T$, while for $t >T$ the solutions become integrable and exhibit a different vanishing profile. For the Yamabe flow ($m = \frac{N-2}{N+2}$) the above means that these solutions $u$ develop a singularity at time $T$, when the Barenblatt solution disappears, and at $t >T$ they immediately smoothen up and exhibit the vanishing profile of a sphere. In the appendix we show how to remove the assumption on the bound on $u_0$ from below by a Barenblatt.

Type II extinction profile of maximal solutions to the Ricci flow in $\R^2$

We consider the initial value problem $u_t = Δ\log u$, $u(x,0) = u_0(x)\ge 0$ in $\R^2$, corresponding to the Ricci flow, namely conformal evolution of the metric $u (dx_1^2 + dx_2^2)$ by Ricci curvature. It is well known that the maximal (complete) solution $u$ vanishes identically after time $T= \frac 1{4π} \int_{\R^2} u_0 $. Assuming that $u_0$ is compactly supported we describe precisely the Type II vanishing behavior of $u$ at time $T$: we show the existence of an inner region with exponentially fast vanishing profile, which is, up to proper scaling, a {\em soliton cigar solution}, and the existence of an outer region of persistence of a logarithmic cusp. This is the only Type II singularity which has been shown to exist, so far, in the Ricci Flow in any dimension. It recovers rigorously formal asymptotics derived by J.R. King \cite{K}.

Eternal Solutions to the Ricci Flow on $\R^2$

We provide the classification of eternal (or ancient) solutions of the two-dimensional Ricci flow, which is equivalent to the fast diffusion equation $ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} = Δ\log u $ on $ \R^2 \times \R.$ We show that, under the necessary assumption that for every $t \in \R$, the solution $u(\cdot, t)$ defines a complete metric of bounded curvature and bounded width, $u$ is a gradient soliton of the form $ U(x,t) = \frac{2}{β(|x-x_0|^2 + δe^{2βt})}$, for some $x_0 \in \R^2$ and some constants $β>0$ and $δ>0$.

Properties of the solutions of the conjugate heat equation

In this paper we consider the class $\mathcal{A}$ of those solutions $u(x,t)$ to the conjugate heat equation $\frac{d}{dt}u = -Δu + Ru$ on compact Kähler manifolds $M$ with $c_1 > 0$ (where $g(t)$ changes by the unnormalized Kähler Ricci flow, blowing up at $T < \infty$), which satisfy Perelman's differential Harnack inequality on $[0,T)$. We show $\mathcal{A}$ is nonempty. If $|\ric(g(t))| \le \frac{C}{T-t}$, which is alaways true if we have type I singularity, we prove the solution $u(x,t)$ satisfies the elliptic type Harnack inequlity, with the constants that are uniform in time. If the flow $g(t)$ has a type I singularity at $T$, then $\mathcal{A}$ has excatly one element.

The compactness result for Kähler Ricci solitons

In this paper we prove the compactness result for compact Kähler Ricci gradient shrinking solitons. If $(M_i,g_i)$ is a sequence of Kähler Ricci solitons of real dimension $n \ge 4$, whose curvatures have uniformly bounded $L^{n/2}$ norms, whose Ricci curvatures are uniformly bounded from below and $μ(g_i,1/2) \ge A$ (where $μ$ is Perelman's functional), there is a subsequence $(M_i,g_i)$ converging to a compact orbifold $(M_{\infty},g_{\infty})$ with finitely many isolated singularitites, where $g_{\infty}$ is a Kähler Ricci soliton metric in an orbifold sense (satisfies a soliton equation away from singular points and smoothly extends in some gauge to a metric satisfying Kähler Ricci soliton equation in a lifting around singular points).
