Total Recall at What Cost? Benchmarking the Serving Cost of Agentic Memory Systems

Long-running conversational agents increasingly rely on a memory system to avoid resending the whole conversation each turn, yet how much that costs to serve has received little systematic benchmarking. We compare three memory systems (Mem0, Hindsight, and Mastra Observational Memory) against two reference strategies -- a fixed-size rolling window and resubmitting the full transcript -- across two backbones and conversations of up to 400 turns, pairing every cost measurement with answer accuracy on 665 LoCoMo questions. First, a memory system's serving cost cannot be predicted from conversation length and message size alone: a regression that tracks the two reference strategies closely misses the memory systems by 18-69%, their cost driven instead by internal memory behavior. Second, a break-even analysis shows that whether -- and when -- a memory system becomes cheaper to serve than the full transcript is highly sensitive to the system and the backbone, from the first tens of turns for the cheapest to never within 400 turns for the most expensive. Third, no system wins on both axes: accuracy spans 21-54%, and the backbone choice drives cost as much as the memory system does.

Beyond the Context Window: A Cost-Performance Analysis of Fact-Based Memory vs. Long-Context LLMs for Persistent Agents

Persistent conversational AI systems face a choice between passing full conversation histories to a long-context large language model (LLM) and maintaining a dedicated memory system that extracts and retrieves structured facts. We compare a fact-based memory system built on the Mem0 framework against long-context LLM inference on three memory-centric benchmarks - LongMemEval, LoCoMo, and PersonaMemv2 - and evaluate both architectures on accuracy and cumulative API cost. Long-context GPT-5-mini achieves higher factual recall on LongMemEval and LoCoMo, while the memory system is competitive on PersonaMemv2, where persona consistency depends on stable, factual attributes suited to flat-typed extraction. We construct a cost model that incorporates prompt caching and show that the two architectures have structurally different cost profiles: long-context inference incurs a per-turn charge that grows with context length even under caching, while the memory system's per-turn read cost remains roughly fixed after a one-time write phase. At a context length of 100k tokens, the memory system becomes cheaper after approximately ten interaction turns, with the break-even point decreasing as context length grows. These results characterize the accuracy-cost trade-off between the two approaches and provide a concrete criterion for selecting between them in production deployments.

JAI-1: A Thai-Centric Large Language Model

This technical report introduces JAI-1, a Thai-centric language model with 75B parameters. Recent Thai models have primarily relied on existing open-source models, applying additional training without structural modifications to specialize in Thai. However, this approach risks eroding pre-existing knowledge in the model's parameter space during the injection of Thai-specific information, as optimized parameters for general tasks may conflict with new linguistic requirements. In contrast, JAI-1 adopts an upscaling strategy: starting from a smaller, high-performing English open-source LLM, we expanded its parameter space and utilized the newly allocated capacity to systematically integrate Thai-language knowledge. This methodology not only preserves the original model's general intelligence but also establishes a unique architecture distinct from other open-source models, enabling scalable future enhancements. During pre-training, JAI-1 was exposed to 1.5T tokens, including over 300B Thai language tokens. This was followed by post-training stages -- supervised fine-tuning and alignment tuning -- using more than 600K instruction-based examples. The final model demonstrated superior performance compared to Typhoon2-70B on Thai-centric benchmarks (IFEval-TH, MT-Bench-TH, and JAI-Hall-Bench), validating the efficacy of its upscaling and knowledge-integration framework.
