On the invariance of the string topology coproduct

We give a variant of Naef's formula for the failure of invariance of the string topology coproduct under homotopy equivalences, using an obstruction class built from homotopy data associated to a homotopy equivalence as well as the ``fake diagonal''. The vanishing of our obstruction class can be seen as a way to measure a form of boundedness for homotopy equivalences. We show that the same obstruction rules the failure of invariance for a generalization of the coproduct to higher dimensional loops.

Homological stability for symplectic groups via algebraic arc complexes

We use algebraic arc complexes to prove a homological stability result for symplectic groups with slope 2/3 for rings with finite unitary stable rank. Symplectic groups are here interpreted as the automorphism groups of formed spaces with boundary, which are algebraic analogues of surfaces with boundary, that we also study in the present paper. Our stabilization map is a rank one stabilization in the category of formed spaces with boundary, going through both odd and even symplectic groups.

The double of a simplicial complex

We introduce the notion of doubling and r-tupling for simplicial complexes, a notion reminiscent to that of matching complexes in graph theory. We prove a connectivity result for such complexes and relate r-tupling to stabilizing r times faster in homological stability.

Disordered arcs and Harer stability

We give a new proof of homological stability with the best known isomorphism range for mapping class groups of surfaces with respect to genus. The proof uses the framework of Randal-Williams-Wahl and Krannich applied to disk stabilization in the category of bidecorated surfaces, using the Euler characteristic instead of the genus as a grading. The monoidal category of bidecorated surfaces does not admit a braiding, distinguishing it from previously known settings for homological stability. Nevertheless, we find that it admits a suitable Yang-Baxter element, which we show is sufficient structure for homological stability arguments.

Homological stability: a tool for computations

Homological stability has shown itself to be a powerful tool for the computation of homology of families of groups such as general linear groups, mapping class groups or automorphisms of free groups. We survey here tools and techniques for proving homological stability theorems and for computing the stable homology, and illustrate the method through the computation of the homology of Higman-Thompson groups.

String topology in three flavours

We describe two major string topology operations, the Chas-Sullivan product and the Goresky-Hingston coproduct, from geometric and algebraic perspectives. The geometric construction uses Thom-Pontrjagin intersection theory while the algebraic construction is phrased in terms of Hochschild homology. We give computations of products and coproducts on lens spaces via geometric intersection, and deduce that the coproduct distinguishes 3-dimensional lens spaces. Algebraically, we describe the structure these operations define together on the Tate-Hochschild complex. We use rational homotopy theory methods to sketch the equivalence between the geometric and algebraic definitions for simply connected manifolds and real coefficients, emphasizing the role of configuration spaces. Finally, we study invariance properties of the operations, both algebraically and geometrically.

Product and coproduct in string topology

Let M be a closed Riemannian manifold. We extend the product of Goresky-Hingston, on the cohomology of the free loop space of M relative to the constant loops, to a nonrelative product. It is graded associative and commutative, and compatible with the length filtration on the loop space, like the original product. We prove the following new geometric property of the dual homology coproduct: the nonvanishing of the k-th iterate of the coproduct on a homology class ensures the existence of a loop with a (k+1)-fold self-intersection in every representative of the class. For spheres and projective spaces, we show that this is sharp, in the sense that the k-th iterated coproduct vanishes precisely on those classes that have support in the loops with at most k-fold self-intersections. We study the interactions between this cohomology product and the more well-known Chas-Sullivan product. We give explicit integral chain level constructions of these loop products and coproduct, including a new construction of the Chas-Sullivan product, which avoid the technicalities of infinite dimensional tubular neighborhoods and delicate intersections of chains in loop spaces.

An infinity operad of normalized cacti

We show that normalized cacti form an $\infty$-operad in the form of a dendroidal space satisfying a weak Segal condition. To do this, we introduce a new topological operad of bracketed trees and an enrichment of the dendroidal category $Ω$.

Homological stability for classical groups

We prove a slope 1 stability range for the homology of the symplectic, orthogonal and unitary groups with respect to the hyperbolic form, over any fields other than $F_2$, improving the known range by a factor 2 in the case of finite fields. Our result more generally applies to the automorphism groups of vector spaces equipped with a possibly degenerate form (in the sense of Bak, Tits and Wall). For finite fields of odd characteristic, and more generally fields in which -1 is a sum of two squares, we deduce a stability range for the orthogonal groups with respect to the Euclidean form, and a corresponding result for the unitary groups. In addition, we include an exposition of Quillen's unpublished slope 1 stability argument for the general linear groups over fields other than $F_2$, and use it to recover also the improved range of Galatius-Kupers-Randal-Williams in the case of finite fields, at the characteristic.

Forms over fields and Witt's lemma

We give an overview of the general framework of forms of Bak, Tits and Wall, when restricting to vector spaces over fields, and describe its relationship to the classical notions of Hermitian, alternating and quadratic forms. We then prove a version of Witt's lemma in this context, showing in particular that the action of the group of isometries of a space equipped with a form is transitive on isometric subspaces.

The homology of the Higman-Thompson groups

We prove that Thompson's group $V$ is acyclic, answering a 1992 question of Brown in the positive. More generally, we identify the homology of the Higman-Thompson groups $V_{n,r}$ with the homology of the zeroth component of the infinite loop space of the mod $n-1$ Moore spectrum. As $V = V_{2,1}$, we can deduce that this group is acyclic. Our proof involves establishing homological stability with respect to $r$, as well as a computation of the algebraic K-theory of the category of finitely generated free Cantor algebras of any type $n$.

Homological stability for automorphism groups

Given a family of groups admitting a braided monoidal structure (satisfying mild assumptions) we construct a family of spaces on which the groups act and whose connectivity yields, via a classical argument of Quillen, homological stability for the family of groups. We show that stability also holds with both polynomial and abelian twisted coefficients, with no further assumptions. This new construction of a family of spaces from a family of groups recovers known spaces in the classical examples of stable families of groups, such as the symmetric groups, general linear groups and mapping class groups. By making systematic the proofs of classical stability results, we show that they all hold with the same type of coefficient systems, obtaining in particular without any further work new stability theorems with twisted coefficients for the symmetric groups, braid groups, automorphisms of free groups, unitary groups, mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces and mapping class groups of 3-manifolds. Our construction can also be applied to families of groups not considered before in the context of homological stability. As a byproduct of our work, we construct the braided analogue of the category FI of finite sets and injections relevant to the present context, and define polynomiality for functors in the context of pre-braided monoidal categories.

Hochschild homology of structured algebras

We give a general method for constructing explicit and natural operations on the Hochschild complex of algebras over any PROP with $A_\infty$--multiplication---we think of such algebras as $A_\infty$--algebras "with extra structure". As applications, we obtain an integral version of the Costello-Kontsevich-Soibelman moduli space action on the Hochschild complex of open TCFTs, the Tradler-Zeinalian action of Sullivan diagrams on the Hochschild complex of strict Frobenius algebras, and give applications to string topology in characteristic zero. Our main tool is a generalization of the Hochschild complex.

Universal operations in Hochschild homology

We provide a general method for finding all natural operations on the Hochschild complex of E-algebras, where E is any algebraic structure encoded in a prop with multiplication, as for example the prop of Frobenius, commutative or A_infty-algebras. We show that the chain complex of all such natural operations is approximated by a certain chain complex of formal operations, for which we provide an explicit model that we can calculate in a number of cases. When E encodes the structure of open topological conformal field theories, we identify this last chain complex, up quasi-isomorphism, with the moduli space of Riemann surfaces with boundaries, thus establishing that the operations constructed by Costello and Kontsevich-Soibelman via different methods identify with all formal operations. When E encodes open topological quantum field theories (or symmetric Frobenius algebras) our chain complex identifies with Sullivan diagrams, thus showing that operations constructed by Tradler-Zeinalian, again by different methods, account for all formal operations. As an illustration of the last result we exhibit two infinite families of non-trivial operations and use these to produce non-trivial higher string topology operations, which had so far been elusive.

Homological stability for mapping class groups of surfaces

We give a complete and detailed proof of Harer's stability theorem for the homology of mapping class groups of surfaces, with the best stability range presently known. This theorem and its proof have seen several improvements since Harer's original proof in the mid-80's, and our purpose here is to assemble these many additions.

Stabilization for mapping class groups of 3-manifolds

We prove that the homology of the mapping class group of any 3-manifold stabilizes under connected sum and boundary connected sum with an arbitrary 3-manifold when both manifolds are compact and orientable. The stabilization also holds for the quotient group by twists along spheres and disks, and includes as particular cases homological stability for symmetric automorphisms of free groups, automorphisms of certain free products, and handlebody mapping class groups. Our methods also apply to manifolds of other dimensions in the case of stabilization by punctures.
