Early Telescope Throughput Results from the Collimated Beam Projector at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory LSST requires precise photometric calibration to meet its science goals, particularly for cosmological analyses based on Type Ia supernovae. The Collimated Beam Projector (CBP) has been developed to support this effort by projecting monochromatic point sources of known wavelength and flux directly into the telescope aperture, enabling direct in situ measurements of the full system throughput. We present initial results demonstrating the CBP capability to characterize the instrumental response of the Rubin Telescope and to measure the transmission profiles of LSSTCam broadband filters. In particular, the CBP enables spatially resolved mapping of filter bandpass edge shifts across the focal plane, which can vary by several nanometers as a function of the ray angle of incidence. These early results establish the CBP as a powerful photometric calibration tool and lay the groundwork for continuous throughput monitoring throughout LSST operations.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Data Preview 1

We present Rubin Data Preview 1 DP1, the first data from the NSF DOE Vera C Rubin Observatory, comprising raw and calibrated single epoch images, coadds, difference images, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products. DP1 is based on 1792 optical near infrared exposures acquired over 48 distinct nights by the Rubin Commissioning Camera LSSTComCam on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pach\'on Chile in late 2024. DP1 covers $\sim$15 deg$^2$ distributed across seven roughly equal-sized non-contiguous fields, each independently observed in six broad photometric bands $ugrizy$. The median FWHM of the point spread function across all bands is approximately 1.14 arcseconds, with the sharpest images reaching about 0.58 arcseconds. The 5$\sigma$ point source depths for coadded images in the deepest field the Extended Chandra Deep Field South are $u$ = 24.55, $g$ = 26.18, $r$ = 25.96, $i$ = 25.71, $z$ = 25.07, $y$ = 23.1. Other fields are no more than 2.2 magnitudes shallower in any band where they have nonzero coverage. DP1 contains approximately 2.3 million distinct astrophysical objects, of which 1.6 million are extended in at least one band in coadds and 431 solar system objects of which 93 are new discoveries. DP1 is approximately 3.5 TB in size and is available to Rubin data rights holders via the Rubin Science Platform a cloud based environment for the analysis of petascale astronomical data. While small compared to future LSST releases its high quality and diversity of data support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of full operations in 2026.

Weak lensing mass-richness relation of redMaPPer clusters in the LSST DESC DC2 simulations

Cluster scaling relations are key ingredients in cluster abundance-based cosmological studies. In optical cluster cosmology, where clusters are detected through their richness, cluster-weak gravitational lensing has proven to be a powerful tool to constrain the cluster mass-richness relation. This work is conducted as part of the Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC), which aims to analyze the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, starting in 2026. Weak lensing-inferred cluster properties, such as mass, suffer from several sources of bias. We constrain the mass-richness relation of 3,600 clusters detected by the redMaPPer algorithm in the cosmoDC2 extra-galactic mock catalog of the LSST DESC DC2 simulation, covering 440 square degrees, using number count measurements and either stacked weak lensing profiles or mean cluster masses in intervals of richness ($20 < \lambda < 200$) and redshift ($0.2 < z < 1$). We find that, for an LSST-like source galaxy density, our constraints are robust to changes in the concentration-mass relation and dark matter density profile modeling choices, when source redshifts and shapes are perfectly known. We find that photometric redshift uncertainties can introduce bias at the 1$\sigma$ level, which can be mitigated by an overall correction factor, fitted jointly with the scaling parameters. We find that including positive shear-richness covariance in the fit shifts the results by up to 0.5$\sigma$. Our constraints also compare fairly to a fiducial mass-richness relation, obtained from matching cosmoDC2 halo masses to redMaPPer-detected cluster richnesses.

Multipole analysis of cluster weak lensing shear in The Three Hundred project

Weak gravitational lensing is an important tool to estimate the masses of galaxy clusters, as it allows us to directly access their projected surface mass density along the line-of-sight (LOS) in a manner largely independent of their dynamical state. Moreover, we can extract information on the projected shape of the cluster mass distribution. In this work, we generate mock catalogs of lensed background galaxies to measure the individual lensing properties of galaxy clusters from the simulation project The Three Hundred. By repeating the analysis for different projections of the same cluster, we find that the use of shear multipoles provides constraints on the ellipticity of the cluster projected mass density but does not have a significant impact on the cluster mass reconstruction compared to the standard approach.
