Best-of-Both Worlds for linear contextual bandits with paid observations

We study linear contextual bandits with paid observations, where at each round the learner observes a context, selects an action, and may pay a fixed cost to observe feedback from a subset of arms. We propose two Follow-the-Regularized-Leader algorithms with Best-of-Both-Worlds guarantees. The first, Agg-SPB, extends the SPB-matching framework of Tsuchiya and Ito (2024) by aggregating context-dependent stability terms, achieving the characteristic $T^{2/3}$ adversarial regret rate and logarithmic dependence on $T$ in stochastic environments. The second, CE-SPB, combines arm-dependent observation probabilities with an entropy-adaptive learning rate inspired by Kuroki et al. (2024). It achieves an entropy-adaptive $\widetilde{O}(T^{2/3})$ adversarial guarantee and polylogarithmic stochastic regret, while avoiding the minimum-context-mass dependence arising in the stochastic analysis of Agg-SPB. Both algorithms further extend to corrupted stochastic environments with explicit corruption-dependent guarantees. These results establish that logarithmic stochastic regret is compatible with the $T^{2/3}$ adversarial regime for linear contextual bandits with paid observations, while highlighting a tradeoff between sharper horizon dependence in stochastic settings and path-dependent matching without explicit minimum-context-mass dependence.

A hybrid solution for 2-UAV RAN slicing

It's possible to distribute the Internet to users via drones. However it is then necessary to place the drones according to the positions of the users. Moreover, the 5th Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) technology is designed to accommodate a wide range of applications and industries. The NGNM 5G White Paper \cite{5gwhitepaper} groups these vertical use cases into three categories: - enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) - massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) - Ultra-Reliable Low-latency Communication (URLLC). Partitioning the physical network into multiple virtual networks appears to be the best way to provide a customised service for each application and limit operational costs. This design is well known as \textit{network slicing}. Each drone must thus slice its bandwidth between each of the 3 user classes. This whole problem (placement + bandwidth) can be defined as an optimization problem, but since it is very hard to solve efficiently, it is almost always addressed by AI in the litterature. In my internship, I wanted to prove that viewing the problem as an optimization problem can still be useful, by building an hybrid solution involving on one hand AI and on the other optimization. I use it to achieve better results than approaches that use only AI, although at the cost of slightly larger (but still reasonable) computation times.

Measuring Infrared Surface Brightness Fluctuation Distances with HST WFC3: Calibration and Advice

We present new calibrations of the near-infrared surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distance method for the F110W (J) and F160W (H) bandpasses of the Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared Channel (WFC3/IR) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The calibrations are based on data for 16 early-type galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters observed with WFC3/IR and are provided as functions of both the optical (g-z) and near-infrared (J-H) colors. The scatter about the linear calibration relations for the luminous red galaxies in the sample is approximately 0.10 mag, corresponding to a statistical error of 5% in distance. Our results imply that the distance to any suitably bright elliptical galaxy can be measured with this precision out to about 80 Mpc in a single-orbit observation with WFC3/IR, making this a remarkably powerful instrument for extragalactic distances. The calibration sample also includes much bluer and lower-luminosity galaxies than previously used for IR SBF studies, revealing interesting population differences that cause the calibration scatter to increase for dwarf galaxies.
