Embeddability of higher-rank graphs in groupoids, and the structure of their C*-algebras

We show that the C*-algebra of a row-finite source-free k-graph is Rieffel-Morita equivalent to a crossed product of an AF algebra by the fundamental group of the k-graph. When the k-graph embeds in its fundamental groupoid, this AF algebra is a Fell algebra; and simple-connectedness of a certain sub-1-graph characterises when this Fell algebra is Rieffel--Morita equivalent to a commutative C*-algebra. We provide a substantial suite of results for determining if a given k-graph embeds in its fundamental groupoid, and provide a large class of examples, arising via work of Cartwright, Robertson, Steger et al. from the theory of $\tilde{A_2}$-groups, that do embed.

Group actions on multitrees and the $K$-theory of their crossed products

We study group actions on multitrees, which are directed graphs in which there is at most one directed path between any two vertices. In our main result we describe a six-term exact sequence in $K$-theory for the reduced crossed product $C_0(\partial E)\rtimes_r G$ induced from the action of a countable discrete group $G$ on a row-finite, finitely-aligned multitree $E$ with no sources. We provide formulas for the $K$-theory of $C_0(\partial E) \rtimes_r G$ in the case where $G$ acts freely on $E$, and in the case where all vertex stabilisers are infinite cyclic. We study the action $G\curvearrowright \partial E$ in a range of settings, and describe minimality, local contractivity, topological freeness, and amenability in terms of properties of the underlying data. In an application of our main theorem, we describe a six-term exact sequence in $K$-theory for the crossed product induced from a group acting on the boundary of an undirected tree.

KK-duality for self-similar groupoid actions on graphs

We extend Nekrashevych's $KK$-duality for $C^*$-algebras of regular, recurrent, contracting self-similar group actions to regular, contracting self-similar groupoid actions on a graph, removing the recurrence condition entirely and generalising from a finite alphabet to a finite graph. More precisely, given a regular and contracting self-similar groupoid $(G,E)$ acting faithfully on a finite directed graph $E$, we associate two $C^*$-algebras, $\mathcal{O}(G,E)$ and $\widehat{\mathcal{O}}(G,E)$, to it and prove that they are strongly Morita equivalent to the stable and unstable Ruelle C*-algebras of a Smale space arising from a Wieler solenoid of the self-similar limit space. That these algebras are Spanier-Whitehead dual in $KK$-theory follows from the general result for Ruelle algebras of irreducible Smale spaces proved by Kaminker, Putnam, and the last author.

Self-similar quantum groups

We introduce the notion of self-similarity for compact quantum groups. For a finite set $X$, we introduce a $C^*$-algebra $\mathbb{A}_X$, which is the quantum automorphism group of the infinite homogeneous rooted tree $X^*$. Self-similar quantum groups are then certain quantum subgroups of $\mathbb{A}_X$. Our main class of examples are called finitely-constrained self-similar quantum groups, and we find a class of these examples that can be described as quantum wreath products by subgroups of the quantum permutation group.

Simplicity of twisted C*-algebras of Deaconu--Renault groupoids

We consider Deaconu--Renault groupoids associated to actions of finite-rank free abelian monoids by local homeomorphisms of locally compact Hausdorff spaces. We study simplicity of the twisted C*-algebra of such a groupoid determined by a continuous circle-valued groupoid 2-cocycle. When the groupoid is not minimal, this C*-algebra is never simple, so we focus on minimal groupoids. We describe an action of the quotient of the groupoid by the interior of its isotropy on the spectrum of the twisted C*-algebra of the interior of the isotropy. We prove that the twisted groupoid C*-algebra is simple if and only if this action is minimal. We describe applications to crossed products of topological-graph C*-algebras by quasi-free actions.

C*-algebras of self-similar actions of groupoids on higher-rank graphs and their equilibrium states

We introduce the notion of a self-similar action of a groupoid $G$ on a finite higher-rank graph. To these actions we associate a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules, and thereby obtain corresponding universal Nica--Toeplitz and Cuntz--Pimsner algebras. We consider natural actions of the real numbers on both algebras and study the KMS states of the associated dynamics. For large inverse temperatures, we describe the simplex of KMS states on the Nica--Toeplitz algebra in terms of traces on the full $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that if the graph is $G$-aperiodic and the action satisfies a finite-state condition, then there is a unique KMS state on the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra.

$C^*$-algebras of right LCM monoids and their equilibrium states

We study the internal structure of $C^*$-algebras of right LCM monoids by means of isolating the core semigroup $C^*$-algebra as the coefficient algebra of a Fock-type module on which the full semigroup $C^*$-algebra admits a left action. If the semigroup has a generalised scale, we classify the KMS-states for the associated time evolution on the semigroup $C^*$-algebra, and provide sufficient conditions for uniqueness of the KMS$_β$-state at inverse temperature $β$ in a critical interval.

Reconstructing directed graphs from generalised gauge actions on their Toeplitz algebras

We show how to reconstruct a finite directed graph E from its Toeplitz algebra, its gauge action, and the canonical finite-dimensional abelian subalgebra generated by the vertex projections. We also show that if E has no sinks, then we can recover E from its Toeplitz algebra and the generalised gauge action that has, for each vertex, an independent copy of the circle acting on the generators corresponding to edges emanating from that vertex. We show by example that it is not possible to recover E from its Toeplitz algebra and gauge action alone.

Product-system models for twisted $C^*$-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs

We use product systems of $C^*$-correspondences to introduce twisted $C^*$-algebras of topological higher-rank graphs. We define the notion of a continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle on a topological higher-rank graph, and present examples of such cocycles on large classes of topological higher-rank graphs. To every proper, source-free topological higher-rank graph $Λ$, and continuous $\mathbb{T}$-valued $2$-cocycle $c$ on $Λ$, we associate a product system $X$ of $C_0(Λ^0)$-correspondences built from finite paths in $Λ$. We define the twisted Cuntz--Krieger algebra $C^*(Λ,c)$ to be the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra $\mathcal{O}(X)$, and we define the twisted Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T} C^*(Λ,c)$ to be the Nica--Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{NT}(X)$. We also associate to $Λ$ and $c$ a product system $Y$ of $C_0(Λ^\infty)$-correspondences built from infinite paths. We prove that there is an embedding of $\mathcal{T} C^*(Λ,c)$ into $\mathcal{NT}(Y)$, and an isomorphism between $C^*(Λ,c)$ and $\mathcal{O}(Y)$.

On C*-algebras associated to right LCM semigroups

We initiate the study of the internal structure of C*-algebras associated to a left cancellative semigroup in which any two principal right ideals are either disjoint or intersect in another principal right ideal; these are variously called right LCM semigroups or semigroups that satisfy Clifford's condition. Our main findings are results about uniqueness of the full semigroup C*-algebra. We build our analysis upon a rich interaction between the group of units of the semigroup and the family of constructible right ideals. As an application we identify algebraic conditions on S under which C*(S) is purely infinite and simple.

Equilibrium states on right LCM semigroup C*-algebras

We determine the structure of equilibrium states for a natural dynamics on the boundary quotient diagram of $C^*$-algebras for a large class of right LCM semigroups. The approach is based on abstract properties of the semigroup and covers the previous case studies on $\mathbb{N} \rtimes \mathbb{N}^\times$, dilation matrices, self-similar actions, and Baumslag-Solitar monoids. At the same time, it provides new results for large classes of right LCM semigroups, including those associated to algebraic dynamical systems.

C*-Algebras of algebraic dynamical systems and right LCM semigroups

We introduce algebraic dynamical systems, which consist of an action of a right LCM semigroup by injective endomorphisms of a group. To each algebraic dynamical system we associate a C*-algebra and describe it as a semigroup C*-algebra. As part of our analysis of these C*-algebras we prove results for right LCM semigroups. More precisely we discuss functoriality of the full semigroup C*-algebra and compute its K-theory for a large class of semigroups. We introduce the notion of a Nica-Toeplitz algebra of a product system over a right LCM semigroup, and show that it provides a useful alternative to study algebraic dynamical systems.

Zappa-Szép product groupoids and C*-blends

We study the external and internal Zappa-Szép product of topological groupoids. We show that under natural continuity assumptions the Zappa-Szép product groupoid is étale if and only if the individual groupoids are étale. In our main result we show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact Hausdorff étale Zappa-Szép product groupoid is a C*-blend, in the sense of Exel, of the individual groupoid C*-algebras. We finish with some examples, including groupoids built from *-commuting endomorphisms, and skew product groupoids.

The Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid and its KMS states

We use Katsura's topological graphs to define Toeplitz extensions of Latrémolière and Packer's noncommutative-solenoid C*-algebras. We identify a natural dynamics on each Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid and study the associated KMS states. Our main result shows that the space of extreme points of the KMS simplex of the Toeplitz noncommutative torus at a strictly positive inverse temperature is homeomorphic to a solenoid; indeed, there is an action of the solenoid group on the Toeplitz noncommutative solenoid that induces a free and transitive action on the extreme boundary of the KMS simplex. With the exception of the degenerate case of trivial rotations, at inverse temperature zero there is a unique KMS state, and only this one factors through Latrémolière and Packer's noncommutative solenoid.

Leavitt $R$-algebras over countable graphs embed into $L_{2,R}$

For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we show that the Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ of a graph $E$ embeds into $L_{2,R}$ precisely when $E$ is countable. Before proving this result we prove a generalised Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for Leavitt path algebras over $R$.

$L_{2,\mathbb{Z}} \otimes L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ does not embed in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$

For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we investigate the embedding of tensor product algebras into the Leavitt algebra $L_{2,R}$. We show that the tensor product $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}\otimes L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ does not embed in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ (as a unital $*$-algebra). We also prove a partial non-embedding result for the more general $L_{2,R} \otimes L_{2,R}$. Our techniques rely on realising Thompson's group $V$ as a subgroup of the unitary group of $L_{2,R}$.

C*-algebras associated to graphs of groups

To a large class of graphs of groups we associate a C*-algebra universal for generators and relations. We show that this C*-algebra is stably isomorphic to the crossed product induced from the action of the fundamental group of the graph of groups on the boundary of its Bass-Serre tree. We characterise when this action is minimal, and find a sufficient condition under which it is locally contractive. In the case of generalised Baumslag-Solitar graphs of groups (graphs of groups in which every group is infinite cyclic) we also characterise topological freeness of this action. We are then able to establish a dichotomy for simple C*-algebras associated to generalised Baumslag-Solitar graphs of groups: they are either a Kirchberg algebra, or a stable Bunce-Deddens algebra.
