Classifying Fano Complexity-One $T$-Varieties via Divisorial Polytopes

The correspondence between Gorenstein Fano toric varieties and reflexive polytopes has been generalized by Ilten and Süß to a correspondence between Gorenstein Fano complexity-one $T$-varieties and Fano divisorial polytopes. Motivated by the finiteness of reflexive polytopes in fixed dimension, we show that over a fixed base polytope, there are only finitely many Fano divisorial polytopes, up to equivalence. We classify two-dimensional Fano divisorial polytopes, recovering Huggenberger's classification of Gorenstein del Pezzo $\mathbb{K}^*$-surfaces. Furthermore, we show that any three-dimensional Fano divisorial polytope is equivalent to one involving only eight functions.

Rational Complexity-One T-Varieties are Well-Poised

Given an affine rational complexity-one $T$-variety $X$, we construct an explicit embedding of $X$ in affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$. We show that this embedding is well-poised, that is, every initial ideal of $I_X$ is a prime ideal, and determine the tropicalization of $X$. We then study valuations of the coordinate ring $R_X$ of $X$ which respect the torus action, showing that for full rank valuations, the natural generators of $R_X$ form a Khovanskii basis. This allows us to determine Newton-Okounkov bodies of rational projective complexity-one $T$-varieties, partially recovering (and generalizing) results of Petersen. We apply our results to describe all irreducible special fibers of $\mathbb{K}^*\times T$-equivariant degenerations of rational projective complexity-one $T$-varieties, generalizing a results of Süß and the first author.

On Fano Schemes of Toric Varieties

Let $X_\mathcal{A}$ be the projective toric variety corresponding to a finite set of lattice points $\mathcal{A}$. We show that irreducible components of the Fano scheme $\mathbf{F}_k(X_\mathcal{A})$ parametrizing $k$-dimensional linear subspaces of $X_\mathcal{A}$ are in bijection to so-called maximal Cayley structures for $\mathcal{A}$. We explicitly describe these irreducible components and their intersection behaviour, characterize when $\mathbf{F}_k(X_\mathcal{A})$ is connected, and prove that if $X_\mathcal{A}$ is smooth in dimension $k$, then every component of $\mathbf{F}_k(X_\mathcal{A})$ is smooth in its reduced structure. Furthermore, in the special case $k=\dim X_\mathcal{A}-1$, we describe the non-reduced structure of $\mathbf{F}_k(X_\mathcal{A})$. Our main result is closely related to concurrent work done independently by Furukawa and Ito.

Unobstructed Stanley-Reisner Degenerations for Dual Quotient Bundles on $G(2,n)$

Let $Q^*$ denote the dual of the quotient bundle on the Grassmannian $G(2,n)$. We prove that the ideal of $Q^*$ in its natural embedding has initial ideal equal to the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a certain unobstructed simplicial complex. Furthermore, we show that the coordinate ring of $Q^*$ has no infinitesimal deformations for $n>5$.

Product Ranks of the $3\times 3$ Determinant and Permanent

We show that the product rank of the $3\times 3$ determinant is $5$, and the product rank of the $3\times 3$ permanent is $4$. As a corollary, we obtain that the tensor ranks of the $3 \times 3$ determinant and permanent are $5$ and $4$, respectively. We show moreover that the border product rank of the $n \times n$ permanent is larger than $n$ for any $n\geq 3$.

F-Split and F-Regular Varieties with a Diagonalizable Group Action

Let $H$ be a diagonalizable group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic, and $X$ a normal $k$-variety with an $H$-action. Under a mild hypothesis, e.g. $H$ a torus or $X$ quasiprojective, we construct a certain quotient log pair $(Y,Δ)$ and show that $X$ is F-split (F-regular) if and only if the pair $(Y,Δ)$ if F-split (F-regular). We relate splittings of $X$ compatible with $H$-invariant subvarieties to compatible splittings of $(Y,Δ)$, as well as discussing diagonal splittings of $X$. We apply this machinery to analyze the F-splitting and F-regularity of complexity-one $T$-varieties and toric vector bundles, among other examples.

Fano schemes of determinants and permanents

Let $D_{m,n}^r$ and $P_{m,n}^r$ denote the subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^{mn-1}$ given by the $r\times r$ determinants (respectively the $r\times r$ permanents) of an $m\times n$ matrix of indeterminates. In this paper, we study the geometry of the Fano schemes $\mathbf{F}_k(D_{m,n}^r)$ and $\mathbf{F}_k(P_{m,n}^r)$ parametrizing the $k$-dimensional planes in $\mathbb{P}^{mn-1}$ lying on $D_{m,n}^r$ and $P_{m,n}^r$, respectively. We prove results characterizing which of these Fano schemes are smooth, irreducible, and connected; and we give examples showing that they need not be reduced. We show that $\mathbf{F}_1(D_{n,n}^n)$ always has the expected dimension, and we describe its components exactly. Finally, we give a detailed study of the Fano schemes of $k$-planes on the $3\times 3$ determinantal and permanental hypersurfaces.

Equivariant Vector Bundles on T-Varieties

Let X be a T-variety, where T is an algebraic torus. We describe a fully faithful functor from the category of T-equivariant vector bundles on X to a certain category of filtered vector bundles on a suitable quotient of X by T. We show that if X is factorial, this functor gives an equivalence of categories. This generalizes Klyachko's description of equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties. We apply our machinery to show that vector bundles of low rank on projective space which are equivariant with respect to special subtori of the maximal torus must split, generalizing a theorem of Kaneyama. Further applications include descriptions of global vector fields on T-varieties, and a study of equivariant deformations of equivariant vector bundles.

AG Codes from Polyhedral Divisors

A description of complete normal varieties with lower dimensional torus action has been given by Altmann, Hausen, and Suess, generalizing the theory of toric varieties. Considering the case where the acting torus T has codimension one, we describe T-invariant Weil and Cartier divisors and provide formulae for calculating global sections, intersection numbers, and Euler characteristics. As an application, we use divisors on these so-called T-varieties to define new evaluation codes called T-codes. We find estimates on their minimum distance using intersection theory. This generalizes the theory of toric codes and combines it with AG codes on curves. As the simplest application of our general techniques we look at codes on ruled surfaces coming from decomposable vector bundles. Already this construction gives codes that are better than the related product code. Further examples show that we can improve these codes by constructing more sophisticated T-varieties. These results suggest to look further for good codes on T-varieties.

One-Parameter Toric Deformations of Cyclic Quotient Singularities

In the case of two-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities, we classify all one-parameter toric deformations in terms of certain Minkowski decompositions. In particular, we describe to which components each such deformation maps, show how to induce each deformation from a versal family, give explicit equations for each deformation, describe the singularities in the general fibers, and construct the corresponding partial simultaneous resolutions.
