Cusps in $\mathbb{C}^3$ with prescribed ramification

We study value semigroups associated to germs of maps $\mathbb{C} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}^3$ with fixed ramification profiles in a distinguished point. We then apply our analysis to deduce that Severi varieties of unicuspidal rational fixed-degree curves with value semigroup ${\rm S}$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ are often reducible when ${\rm S}$ is either 1) the semigroup of a generic cusp whose ramification profile is a supersymmetric triple; or 2) a supersymmetric semigroup with ramification profile given by a supersymmetric triple. In doing so, we uncover new connections with additive combinatorics and number theory.

Enumerating numerical sets associated to a numerical semigroup

A numerical set $T$ is a subset of $\mathbb N_0$ that contains $0$ and has finite complement. The atom monoid of $T$ is the set of $x \in \mathbb N_0$ such that $x+T \subseteq T$. Marzuola and Miller introduced the anti-atom problem: how many numerical sets have a given atom monoid? This is equivalent to asking for the number of integer partitions with a given set of hook lengths. We introduce the void poset of a numerical semigroup $S$ and show that numerical sets with atom monoid $S$ are in bijection with certain order ideals of this poset. We use this characterization to answer the anti-atom problem when $S$ has small type.

The probability of non-isomorphic group structures of isogenous elliptic curves in finite field extensions, I

Let $\ell$ be a prime number and let $E$ and $E'$ be $\ell$-isogenous elliptic curves defined over a finite field $k$ of characteristic $p \ne \ell$. Suppose the groups $E(k)$ and $E'(k)$ are isomorphic, but $E(K) \not \simeq E'(K)$, where $K$ is an $\ell$-power extension of $k$. In a previous work we have shown that, under mild rationality hypotheses, the case of interest is when $\ell=2$ and $K$ is the unique quadratic extension of $k$. In this paper we study the likelihood of such an occurrence by fixing a pair of 2-isogenous elliptic curves $E$, $E'$ over ${\mathbf{Q}}$ and asking for the proportion of primes $p$ for which $E(\mathbf{F}_p) \simeq E'(\mathbf{F}_p)$ and $E(\mathbf{F}_{p^2}) \not \simeq E'(\mathbf{F}_{p^2})$.

The Expected Embedding Dimension, type and weight of a Numerical Semigroup

We study statistical properties of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ as $g$ goes to infinity. More specifically, we answer a question of Eliahou by showing that as $g$ goes to infinity, the proportion of numerical semigroups of genus $g$ with embedding dimension close to $g/\sqrt{5}$ approaches $1$. We prove similar results for the type and weight of a numerical semigroup of genus $g$.

The cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$

We give an asymptotic formula for the number of sublattices $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ of index at most $X$ for which $\mathbb{Z}^d/Λ$ has rank at most $m$, answering a question of Nguyen and Shparlinski. We compare this result to recent work of Stanley and Wang on Smith Normal Forms of random integral matrices and discuss connections to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our arguments are based on Petrogradsky's formulas for the cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, a multivariable generalization of the subgroup growth zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.

Numerical semigroups, polyhedra, and posets I: the group cone

Several recent papers have explored families of rational polyhedra whose integer points are in bijection with certain families of numerical semigroups. One such family, first introduced by Kunz, has integer points in bijection with numerical semigroups of fixed multiplicity, and another, introduced by Hellus and Waldi, has integer points corresponding to oversemigroups of numerical semigroups with two generators. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial framework from which to study both families of polyhedra. We introduce a new family of polyhedra called group cones, each constructed from some finite abelian group, from which both of the aforementioned families of polyhedra are directly determined but that are more natural to study from a standpoint of polyhedral geometry. We prove that the faces of group cones are naturally indexed by a family of finite posets, and illustrate how this combinatorial data relates to semigroups living in the corresponding faces of the other two families of polyhedra.

Generalizations of results of Friedman and Washington on cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices

Let $p$ be prime and $X$ be a Haar-random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$, the ring of $p$-adic integers. Let $P_{1}(t), \dots, P_{l}(t) \in \mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]$ be monic polynomials of degree at most $2$ whose images modulo $p$ are distinct and irreducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p}[t]$. For each $j$, let $G_{j}$ be a finite module over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}[t]/(P_{j}(t))$. We show that as $n$ goes to infinity, the probabilities that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ are independent, and each probability can be described in terms of a Cohen-Lenstra distribution. We also show that for any fixed $n$, the probability that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(X)) \simeq G_{j}$ for each $j$ is a constant multiple of the probability that that $\mathrm{cok}(P_{j}(\bar{X})) \simeq G_{j}/pG_{j}$ for each $j$, where $\bar{X}$ is an $n \times n$ uniformly random matrix over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$. These results generalize work of Friedman and Washington and prove new cases of a conjecture of Cheong and Huang.

Counting Finite Index Subrings of $\mathbb{Z}^n$

We count subrings of small index of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, where the addition and multiplication are defined componentwise. Let $f_n(k)$ denote the number of subrings of index $k$. For any $n$, we give a formula for this quantity for all integers $k$ that are not divisible by a 9th power of a prime, extending a result of Liu.

Random Partitions and Cohen-Lenstra Heuristics

We investigate combinatorial properties of a family of probability distributions on finite abelian p-groups. This family includes several well-known distributions as specializations. These specializations have been studied in the context of Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and cokernels of families of random p-adic matrices.

Weight enumerators of Reed-Muller codes from cubic curves and their duals

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of characteristic not equal to $2$ or $3$. We compute the weight enumerators of some projective and affine Reed-Muller codes of order $3$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. These weight enumerators answer enumerative questions about plane cubic curves. We apply the MacWilliams theorem to give formulas for coefficients of the weight enumerator of the duals of these codes. We see how traces of Hecke operators acting on spaces of cusp forms for $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ play a role in these formulas.

Elliptic curves over a finite field and the trace formula

We prove formulas for power moments for point counts of elliptic curves over a finite field $k$ such that the groups of $k$-points of the curves contain a chosen subgroup. These formulas express the moments in terms of traces of Hecke operators for certain congruence subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. As our main technical input we prove an Eichler-Selberg trace formula for a family of congruence subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ which include as special cases the groups $Γ_1(N)$ and $Γ(N)$. Our formulas generalize results of Birch and Ihara (the case of the trivial subgroup, and the full modular group), and previous work of the authors (the subgroups $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ and $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^2$ and congruence subgroups $Γ_0(2),Γ_0(4)$). We use these formulas to answer statistical questions about point counts for elliptic curves over a fixed finite field, generalizing results of Vlǎduţ, Gekeler, Howe, and others.

Counting Numerical Semigroups

A numerical semigroup is an additive submonoid of the natural numbers with finite complement. The size of the complement is called the genus of the semigroup. How many numerical semigroups have genus equal to $g$? We outline Zhai's proof of a conjecture of Bras-Amorós that this sequence has Fibonacci-like growth. We now know that this sequence asymptotically grows as fast as the Fibonacci numbers, but it is still not known whether it is nondecreasing. We discuss this and other open problems. We highlight the many contributions made by undergraduates to problems in this area.

Counting Arcs in Projective Planes via Glynn's Algorithm

An $n$-arc in a projective plane is a collection of $n$ distinct points in the plane, no three of which lie on a line. Formulas counting the number of $n$-arcs in any finite projective plane of order $q$ are known for $n \le 8$. In 1995, Iampolskaia, Skorobogatov, and Sorokin counted $9$-arcs in the projective plane over a finite field of order $q$ and showed that this count is a quasipolynomial function of $q$. We present a formula for the number of $9$-arcs in any projective plane of order $q$, even those that are non-Desarguesian, deriving Iampolskaia, Skorobogatov, and Sorokin's formula as a special case. We obtain our formula from a new implementation of an algorithm due to Glynn; we give details of our implementation and discuss its consequences for larger arcs.

Representations of the Multicast Network Problem

We approach the problem of linear network coding for multicast networks from different perspectives. We introduce the notion of the coding points of a network, which are edges of the network where messages combine and coding occurs. We give an integer linear program that leads to choices of paths through the network that minimize the number of coding points. We introduce the code graph of a network, a simplified directed graph that maintains the information essential to understanding the coding properties of the network. One of the main problems in network coding is to understand when the capacity of a multicast network is achieved with linear network coding over a finite field of size q. We explain how this problem can be interpreted in terms of rational points on certain algebraic varieties.

Traces of Hecke Operators and Refined Weight Enumerators of Reed-Solomon Codes

We study the quadratic residue weight enumerators of the dual projective Reed-Solomon codes of dimensions $5$ and $q-4$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our main results are formulas for the coefficients of the the quadratic residue weight enumerators for such codes. If $q=p^v$ and we fix $v$ and vary $p$ then our formulas for the coefficients of the dimension $q-4$ code involve only polynomials in $p$ and the trace of the $q$th and $(q/p^2)$th Hecke operators acting on spaces of cusp forms for the congruence groups $\operatorname{SL}_2 (\mathbb{Z}), Γ_0(2)$, and $Γ_0(4)$. The main tool we use is the Eichler-Selberg trace formula, which gives along the way a variation of a theorem of Birch on the distribution of rational point counts for elliptic curves with prescribed $2$-torsion over a fixed finite field.

Databases of elliptic curves ordered by height and distributions of Selmer groups and ranks

Most systematic tables of data associated to ranks of elliptic curves order the curves by conductor. Recent developments, led by work of Bhargava-Shankar studying the average sizes of $n$-Selmer groups, have given new upper bounds on the average algebraic rank in families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height. We describe databases of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ ordered by height in which we compute ranks and $2$-Selmer group sizes, the distributions of which may also be compared to these theoretical results. A striking new phenomenon observed in these databases is that the average rank eventually decreases as height increases.

The Realization Problem for Delta Sets of Numerical Semigroups

The delta set of a numerical semigroup $S$, denoted $Δ(S)$, is a factorization invariant that measures the complexity of the sets of lengths of elements in $S$. We study the following problem: Which finite sets occur as the delta set of a numerical semigroup $S$? It is known that $\min Δ(S) = \gcd Δ(S)$ is a necessary condition. For any two-element set $\{d,td\}$ we produce a semigroup $S$ with this delta set. We then show that for $t\ge 2$, the set $\{d,td\}$ occurs as the delta set of some numerical semigroup of embedding dimension three if and only if $t=2$.

Numerical Sets, Core Partitions, and Integer Points in Polytopes

We study a correspondence between numerical sets and integer partitions that leads to a bijection between simultaneous core partitions and the integer points of a certain polytope. We use this correspondence to prove combinatorial results about core partitions. For small values of a, we give formulas for the number of (a,b)-core partitions corresponding to numerical semigroups. We also study the number of partitions with a given hook set.
