Multielectron Ground State Electroluminescence

The ground state of a cavity-electron system in the ultrastrong coupling regime is characterized by the presence of virtual photons. If an electric current flows through this system, the modulation of the light-matter coupling induced by this non-equilibrium effect can induce an extra-cavity photon emission signal, even when electrons entering the cavity do not have enough energy to populate the excited states. We show that this ground-state electroluminescence, previously identified in a single-qubit system [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 113601 (2016)] can arise in a many-electron system. The collective enhancement of the light-matter coupling makes this effect, described beyond the rotating wave approximation, robust in the thermodynamic limit, allowing its observation in a broad range of physical systems, from a semiconductor heterostructure with flat-band dispersion to various implementations of the Dicke model.

Superradiance with local phase-breaking effects

We study the superradiant evolution of a set of $N$ two-level systems spontaneously radiating under the effect of phase-breaking mechanisms. We investigate the dynamics generated by non-radiative losses and pure dephasing, and their interplay with spontaneous emission. Our results show that in the parameter region relevant to many solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments, even with a dephasing rate much faster than the radiative lifetime of a single two-level system, a sub-optimal collective superfluorescent burst is still observable. We also apply our theory to the dilute excitation regime, often used to describe optical excitations in solid-state systems. In this regime, excitations can be described in terms of bright and dark bosonic quasiparticles. We show how the effect of dephasing and losses in this regime translates into inter-mode scattering rates and quasiparticle lifetimes.

Theory of intersubband resonance fluorescence

The fluorescence spectrum of a strongly pumped two level system is characterised by the Mollow triplet that has been observed in a variety of systems, ranging from atoms to quantum dots and superconducting qubits. We theoretically studied the fluorescence of a strongly pumped intersubband transition in a quantum well. Our results show that the many-electron nature of such a system leads to a modification of the usual Mollow theory. In particular, the intensity of the central peak in the fluorescence spectrum becomes a function of the electron coherence, allowing access to the coherence time of a two dimensional electron gas through a fluorescence intensity measurement.

Quantifying the nonlinearity of a quantum oscillator

We address the quantification of nonlinearity for quantum oscillators and introduce two measures based on the properties of the ground state rather than on the form of the potential itself. The first measure is a fidelity-based one, and corresponds to the renormalized Bures distance between the ground state of the considered oscillator and the ground state of a reference harmonic oscillator. Then, in order to avoid the introduction of this auxiliary oscillator, we introduce a different measure based on the non-Gaussianity (nG) of the ground state. The two measures are evaluated for a sample of significant nonlinear potentials and their properties are discussed in some detail. We show that the two measures are monotone functions of each other in most cases, and this suggests that the nG-based measure is a suitable choice to capture the anharmonic nature of a quantum oscillator, and to quantify its nonlinearity independently on the specific features of the potential. We also provide examples of potentials where the Bures measure cannot be defined, due to the lack of a proper reference harmonic potential, while the nG-based measure properly quantify their nonlinear features. Our results may have implications in experimental applications where access to the effective potential is limited, e.g., in quantum control, and protocols rely on information about the ground or thermal state.

Terahertz emission from AC Stark-split asymmetric intersubband transitions

Transitions between the two states of an AC Stark-split doublet are forbidden in centro-symmetric systems, and thus almost impossible to observe in experiments performed with atomic clouds. However, electrons trapped in nanoscopic heterostructures can behave as artificial atoms, with the advantage that the wavefunction symmetry can be broken by using asymmetric confining potentials. Here we develop the many-body theory describing the intra-doublet emission of a resonantly pumped intersubband transition in a doped asymmetric quantum well, showing that in such a system the intra-doublet emission can be orders of magnitude higher than in previously studied systems. This emission channel, which lies in the terahertz range, and whose frequency depends upon the pump power, opens the way to the realization of a new class of monolithic and tunable terahertz emitters.
