Disentangling the Generalized Double Semion Model

We analyze the class of Generalized Double Semion (GDS) models in arbitrary dimensions from the point of view of lattice Hamiltonians. We show that on a $d$-dimensional spatial manifold $M$ the dual of the GDS is equivalent, up to constant depth local quantum circuits, to a group cohomology theory tensored with lower dimensional cohomology models that depend on the manifold $M$. We comment on the space-time topological quantum field theory (TQFT) interpretation of this result. We also investigate the GDS in the presence of time reversal symmetry, showing that it forms a non-trivial symmetry enriched toric code phase in odd spatial dimensions.

Jordan-Wigner Dualities for Translation-Invariant Hamiltonians in Any Dimension: Emergent Fermions in Fracton Topological Order

Inspired by recent developments generalizing Jordan-Wigner dualities to higher dimensions, we develop a framework of such dualities using an algebraic formalism for translation-invariant Hamiltonians proposed by Haah. We prove that given a translation-invariant fermionic system with general $q$-body interactions, where $q$ is even, a local mapping preserving global fermion parity to a dual Pauli spin model exists and is unique up to a choice of basis. Furthermore, the dual spin model is constructive, and we present various examples of these dualities. As an application, we bosonize fermionic systems where free-fermion hopping terms are absent ($q \ge 4$) and fermion parity is conserved on submanifolds such as higher-form, line, planar or fractal symmetry. For some cases in 3+1D, bosonizing such a system can give rise to fracton models where the emergent particles are immobile but yet can behave in certain ways like fermions. These models may be examples of new nonrelativistic 't Hooft anomalies. Furthermore, fermionic subsystem symmetries are also present in various Majorana stabilizer codes, such as the color code or the checkerboard model, and we give examples where their duals are cluster states or new fracton models distinct from their doubled CSS codes.

Searching for Fracton Orders via Symmetry Defect Condensation

We propose a set of constraints on the ground-state wavefunctions of fracton phases, which provide a possible generalization of the string-net equations used to characterize topological orders in two spatial dimensions. Our constraint equations arise by exploiting a duality between certain fracton orders and quantum phases with "subsystem" symmetries, which are defined as global symmetries on lower-dimensional manifolds, and then studying the distinct ways in which the defects of a subsystem symmetry group can be consistently condensed to produce a gapped, symmetric state. We numerically solve these constraint equations in certain tractable cases to obtain the following results: in $d=3$ spatial dimensions, the solutions to these equations yield gapped fracton phases that are distinct as conventional quantum phases, along with their dual subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) states. For an appropriate choice of subsystem symmetry group, we recover known fracton phases such as Haah's code, along with new, symmetry-enriched versions of these phases, such as non-stabilizer fracton models which are distinct from both the X-cube model and the checkerboard model in the presence of global time-reversal symmetry, as well as a variety of fracton phases enriched by spatial symmetries. In $d=2$ dimensions, we find solutions that describe new weak and strong SSPT states, such as ones with both line-like subsystem symmetries and global time-reversal symmetry. In $d=1$ dimension, we show that any group cohomology solution for a symmetry-protected topological state protected by a global symmetry, along with lattice translational symmetry necessarily satisfies our consistency conditions.

Full Commuting Projector Hamiltonians of Interacting Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases of Fermions

Using the decorated domain wall procedure, we construct Finite Depth Local Unitaries (FDLUs) that realize Fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) phases. This results in explicit 'full' commuting projector Hamiltonians, where 'full' implies the fact that the ground state, as well as all excited states of these Hamiltonians, realizes the nontrivial SPT phase. We begin by constructing explicit examples of 1+1D phases protected by symmetry groups $G=\mathbb Z_2^T \times \mathbb Z_2^F$ , which also has a free fermion realization in class BDI, and $G=\mathbb Z_4 \times \mathbb Z_4^F$, which does not. We then turn to 2+1D, and construct the square roots of the Levin-Gu bosonic SPT phase, protected by $\mathbb Z_2 \times \mathbb Z_2^F$ symmetry, in a concrete model of fermions and spins on the triangular lattice. Edge states and the anomalous symmetry action on them are explicitly derived. Although this phase has a free fermion representation as two copies of $p+ip$ superconductors combined with their $p-ip$ counterparts with a different symmetry charge, the full set of commuting projectors is only realized in the strongly interacting version, which also implies that it admits a many-body localized realization.

Dimensional Reduction and Topological Invariants of Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases

We review the dimensional reduction procedure in the group cohomology classification of bosonic SPT phases with finite abelian unitary symmetry group. We then extend this to include general reductions of arbitrary dimensions and also extend the procedure to fermionic SPT phases described by the Gu-Wen super-cohomology model. We then show that we can define topological invariants as partition functions on certain closed orientable/spin manifolds equipped with a flat connection. The invariants are able to distinguish all phases described within the respective models. Finally, we establish a connection to invariants obtained from braiding statistics of the corresponding gauged theories.

Loop Braiding Statistics and Interacting Fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases in Three Dimensions

We study Abelian braiding statistics of loop excitations in three-dimensional (3D) gauge theories with fermionic particles and the closely related problem of classifying 3D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (FSPT) phases with unitary symmetries. It is known that the two problems are related by turning FSPT phases into gauge theories through gauging the global symmetry of the former. We show that there exist certain types of Abelian loop braiding statistics that are allowed only in the the presence of fermionic particles, which correspond to 3D "intrinsic" FSPT phases, i.e., those that do not stem from bosonic SPT phases. While such intrinsic FSPT phases are ubiquitous in 2D systems and in 3D systems with anti-unitary symmetries, their existence in 3D systems with unitary symmetries was not confirmed previously due to the fact that strong interaction is necessary to realize them. We show that the simplest unitary symmetry to support 3D intrinsic FSPT phases is $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_4$. To establish the results, we first derive a complete set of physical constraints on Abelian loop braiding statistics. Solving the constraints, we obtain all possible Abelian loop braiding statistics in 3D gauge theories, including those that correspond to intrinsic FSPT phases. Then, we construct exactly soluble state-sum models to realize the loop braiding statistics. These state-sum models generalize the well-known Crane-Yetter and Dijkgraaf-Witten models.
