Johnson-noise-limited cancellation-free microwave impedance microscopy with monolithic silicon cantilever probes

Microwave impedance microscopy (MIM) is an emerging scanning probe technique for nanoscale complex permittivity mapping and has made significant impacts in diverse fields from semiconductors to quantum materials. To date, the most significant hurdles that limit its widespread use are the requirements of specialized microwave probes and high-precision cancellation circuits. Here we show that forgoing both elements not only is feasible but actually enhances MIM performance. Using monolithic silicon cantilever probes and a cancellation-free architecture, we demonstrate thermal Johnson-noise-limited, drift-free MIM operation with 15 nm spatial resolution, minimal topography crosstalk, and an unprecedented sensitivity of 0.26 zF/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. We accomplish this by taking advantage of the high mechanical resonant frequency and spatial resolution of silicon probes, the inherent common-mode phase noise rejection of self-referenced homodyne detection, and the exceptional stability of the streamlined architecture. Our approach makes MIM drastically more accessible and paves the way for more advanced operation modes and integration with complementary techniques.

Linear Polycatenanes from Kinetoplast Edge Loops

We use graph theory simulations and single molecule experiments to investigate percolation properties of kinetoplasts, the topologically linked mitochondrial DNA from trypanosome parasites. The edges of some kinetoplast networks contain a fiber of redundantly catenated DNA loops, but previous investigations of kinetoplast topology did not take this into account. Our graph simulations track the size of connected components in lattices as nodes are removed, analogous to the removal of minicircles from kinetoplasts. We find that when the edge loop is taken into account, the largest component after the network de-percolates is a remnant of the edge loop, before it undergoes a second percolation transition and breaks apart. This implies that stochastically removing minicircles from kinetoplast DNA would isolate large polycatenanes, which is observed in experiments that use photonicking to stochastically destroy kinetoplasts from Crithidia fasciculata. Our results imply kinetoplasts may be used as a source of linear polycatenanes for future experiments.

Coxeter quotients of knot groups through 16 crossings

We find explicit maximal rank Coxeter quotients for the knot groups of 595,515 out of the 1,701,936 knots through 16 crossings. We thus calculate the bridge numbers and verify Cappell and Shaneson's Meridional Rank Conjecture for these knots. In addition, we provide a computational tool for establishing the conjecture for knots beyond 16 crossings whose meridional ranks can be detected via finite Coxeter quotients.

Knots with Exactly 10 Sticks

We prove that the knots $13n_{592}$ and $15n_{41,127}$ both have stick number 10. These are the first non-torus prime knots with more than 9 crossings for which the exact stick number is known.
