Parisi's hypercube, Fock-space fluxes, and the microscopics of near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_1$ duality

Parisi's hypercube model describes a charged particle hopping on a $d$-dimensional hypercube with disordered background fluxes in the large $d$ limit. It was noted previously [Jia and Verbaarschot, J. High Energy Phys. 11 (2020) 154] that the hypercube model at leading order in $1/d$ has the same spectral density as the double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (DS-SYK) model. In this work we identify the set of observables that have the same correlation functions as the DS-SYK model, demonstrating that the hypercube model is an equally good microscopic model for near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_1$ holography. Unlike the SYK model, the hypercube model is not $p$-local. Rather, we note that the shared feature between the two models is that they both have a large amount of disordered but uniform fluxes on their Fock-space graphs, and we propose this is a broader characterization of near-CFT$_1$ microscopics. Moreover, we suggest that the hypercube model can be viewed as the operator growth model of the DS-SYK model. We explain some universality in subleading corrections and relate them to bulk vertices. Finally, we revise a claim made the aforementioned reference about the existence of a spectral gap.

Parisi's hypercube, Fock-space frustration and near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_1$ holography

We consider a model of Parisi where a single particle hops on an infinite-dimensional hypercube, under the influence of a uniform but disordered magnetic flux. We reinterpret the hypercube as the Fock-space graph of a many-body Hamiltonian and the flux as a frustration of the return amplitudes in Fock space. We will identify the set of observables that have the same correlation functions as the double-scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (DS-SYK) model, and hence the hypercube model is an equally good quantum model for near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_{1}$ (NAdS$_2$/NCFT$_1$) holography. Unlike the SYK model, the hypercube Hamiltonian is not $p$ local. Instead, the SYK model can be understood as a Fock-space model with similar frustrations. Hence we propose this type of Fock-space frustration as the broader characterization for NAdS$_2$/NCFT$_1$ microscopics, which encompasses the hypercube and the DS-SYK models as two specific examples. We then speculate on the possible origin of such frustrations.

The onset of quantum chaos in disordered CFTs

We study the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in quantum field theories with spacetime-independent disorder interactions. Generically $λ_L$ can only be computed at isolated points in parameter space, and little is known about the way in which chaos grows as we deform the theory away from weak coupling. In this paper we describe families of theories in which the disorder coupling is an exactly marginal deformation, allowing us to follow $λ_L$ from weak to strong coupling. We find surprising behaviors in some cases, including a discontinuous transition into chaos. We also derive self-consistency equations for the two- and four-point functions for products of $N$ nontrivial CFTs deformed by disorder at leading order in $1/N$.

Onset of Quantum Chaos in Random Field Theories

We study the quantum Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in theories with spacetime-independent disorder. We first derive self-consistency equations for the two- and four-point functions for products of $N$ models coupled by disorder at large $N$, generalizing the equations appearing in SYK-like models. We then study families of theories in which the disorder coupling is an exactly marginal deformation, allowing us to follow $λ_L$ from weak to strong coupling. We find interesting behaviors, including a discontinuous transition into chaos, mimicking classical KAM theory.

Berry connection induced anomalous wave-packet dynamics in non-Hermitian systems

Berry phases strongly affect the properties of crystalline materials, giving rise to modifications of the semiclassical equations of motion that govern wave-packet dynamics. In non-Hermitian systems, generalizations of the Berry connection have been analyzed to characterize the topology of these systems. While the topological classification of non-Hermitian systems is being developed, little attention has been paid to the impact of the new geometric phases on dynamics and transport. In this work, we derive the full set of semiclassical equations of motion for wave-packet dynamics in a system governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, including corrections induced by the Berry connection. We show that non-Hermiticity is manifested in anomalous weight rate and velocity terms that are present already in one-dimensional systems, in marked distinction from the Hermitian case. We express the anomalous weight and velocity in terms of the Berry connections defined in the space of left and right eigenstates and compare the analytical results with numerical lattice simulations. Our work specifies the conditions for observing the anomalous contributions to the semiclassical dynamics and thereby paves the way to their experimental detection, which should be within immediate reach in currently available metamaterials.

Ballistic and hydrodynamic magnetotransport in narrow channels

An increasing number of low carrier density materials exhibit a surprisingly large transport mean free path due to inefficient momentum relaxation. Consequently, charge transport in these systems is markedly non-ohmic but rather ballistic or hydrodynamic, features which can be explored by driving current through narrow channels. Using a kinetic equation approach we theoretically investigate how a non-quantizing magnetic field discerns ballistic and hydrodynamic transport, in particular in the spatial dependence of the transverse electric field, $E_y$: We find that $E_y$ is locally enhanced when the flow exhibits a sharp directional anisotropy in the non-equilibrium density. As a consequence, at weak magnetic fields, the curvature of $E_y$ has opposite signs in the ballistic and hydrodynamic regimes. Moreover, we find a robust signature of the onset of non-local correlations in the form of distinctive peaks of the transverse field, which are accessible by local measurements. Our results demonstrate that a purely hydrodynamic approach is insufficient in the Gurzhi regime once a magnetic field is introduced.
