Morley Finite Element Method for the von Kármán Obstacle Problem

This paper focusses on the von Kármán equations for the moderately large deformation of a very thin plate with the convex obstacle constraint leading to a coupled system of semilinear fourth-order obstacle problem and motivates its nonconforming Morley finite element approximation. The first part establishes the well-posedness of the von Kármán obstacle problem and also discusses the uniqueness of the solution under an a priori and an a posteriori smallness condition on the data. The second part of the article discusses the regularity result of Frehse from 1971 and combines it with the regularity of the solution on a polygonal domain. The third part of the article shows an a priori error estimate for optimal convergence rates for the Morley finite element approximation to the von Kármán obstacle problem for small data. The article concludes with numerical results that illustrates the requirement of smallness assumption on the data for optimal convergence rate.

Convergence analysis of a numerical scheme for a tumour growth model

We consider a one--spatial dimensional tumour growth model [2, 3, 4] that consists of three dependent variables of space and time: volume fraction of tumour cells, velocity of tumour cells, and nutrient concentration. The model variables satisfy a coupled system of semilinear advection equation (hyperbolic), simplified linear Stokes equation (elliptic), and semilinear diffusion equation (parabolic) with appropriate conditions on the time-dependent boundary, which is governed by an ordinary differential equation. We employ a reformulation of the model defined in a larger, fixed time-space domain to overcome some theoretical difficulties related to the time-dependent boundary. This reformulation reduces the complexity of the model by removing the need to explicitly track the time-dependent boundary, but nonlinearities in the equations, noncoercive operators in the simplified Stokes equation, and interdependence between the unknown variables still challenge the proof of suitable a priori estimates. A numerical scheme that employs a finite volume method for the hyperbolic equation, a finite element method for the elliptic equation, and a backward Euler in time--mass lumped finite element in space method for the parabolic equation is developed. We establish the existence of a time interval $(0,T_{\ast})$ over which, using compactness techniques, we can extract a convergent subsequence of the numerical approximations. The limit of any such convergent subsequence is proved to be a weak solution of the continuous model in an appropriate sense, which we call a threshold solution. Numerical tests and justifications that confirm the theoretical findings conclude the paper.

Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods for the Landau-de Gennes Minimization Problem of Liquid Crystals

We consider a system of second order non-linear elliptic partial differential equations that models the equilibrium configurations of a two dimensional planar bistable nematic liquid crystal device. Discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are used to approximate the solutions of this nonlinear problem with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. A discrete inf-sup condition demonstrates the stability of the discontinuous Galerkin discretization of a well-posed linear problem. We then establish the existence and local uniqueness of the discrete solution of the non-linear problem. An a priori error estimate in the energy norm is derived and a best approximation property is demonstrated. Further, we prove the quadratic convergence of Newton's iterates along with complementary numerical experiments.

Hessian discretisation method for fourth order semi-linear elliptic equations: applications to the von Kármán and Navier--Stokes models

This paper deals with the Hessian discretisation method (HDM) for fourth order semi-linear elliptic equations with a trilinear nonlinearity. The HDM provides a generic framework for the convergence analysis of several numerical methods, such as, the conforming and non-conforming finite element methods (ncFEMs) and methods based on gradient recovery (GR) operators. The Adini ncFEM and GR method, a specific scheme that is based on cheap, local reconstructions of higher-order derivatives from piecewise linear functions, are analysed for the first time for fourth order semi-linear elliptic equations with trilinear nonlinearity. Four properties namely, the coercivity, consistency, limit-conformity and compactness enable the convergence analysis in HDM framework that does not require any regularity of the exact solution. Two important problems in applications namely, the Navier--Stokes equations in stream function vorticity formulation and the von Kármán equations of plate bending are discussed. Results of numerical experiments are presented for the Morley ncFEM and GR method.

Nonconforming Finite Element Discretisation for Semilinear Problems with Trilinear Nonlinearity

The Morley finite element method (FEM) is attractive for semilinear problems with the biharmonic operator as a leading term in the stream function vorticity formulation of 2D Navier-Stokes problem and in the von Kármán equations. This paper establishes a best-approximation a~priori error analysis and an a~posteriori error analysis of discrete solutions close to an arbitrary regular solution on the continuous level to semilinear problems with a trilinear nonlinearity. The analysis avoids any smallness assumptions on the data and so has to provide discrete stability by a perturbation analysis before the Newton-Kantorovic theorem can provide the existence of discrete solutions. An abstract framework for the stability analysis in terms of discrete operators from the medius analysis leads to new results on the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart FEM for second-order linear non-selfadjoint and indefinite elliptic problems with $L^\infty$ coefficients. The paper identifies six parameters and sufficient conditions for the local a~priori and a~posteriori error control of conforming and nonconforming discretisations of a class of semilinear elliptic problems first in an abstract framework and then in the two semilinear applications. This leads to new best-approximation error estimates and to a~posteriori error estimates in terms of explicit residual-based error control for the conforming and Morley FEM.

Numerical analysis for the pure Neumann control problem using the gradient discretisation method

The article discusses the gradient discretisation method (GDM) for distributed optimal control problems governed by diffusion equation with pure Neumann boundary condition. Using the GDM framework enables to develop an analysis that directly applies to a wide range of numerical schemes, from conforming and non-conforming finite elements, to mixed finite elements, to finite volumes and mimetic finite differences methods. Optimal order error estimates for state, adjoint and control variables for low order schemes are derived under standard regularity assumptions. A novel projection relation between the optimal control and the adjoint variable allows the proof of a super-convergence result for post-processed control. Numerical experiments performed using a modified active set strategy algorithm for conforming, nonconforming and mimetic finite difference methods confirm the theoretical rates of convergence.

The gradient discretisation method for optimal control problems, with super-convergence for non-conforming finite elements and mixed-hybrid mimetic finite differences

In this paper, optimal control problems governed by diffusion equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are investigated in the framework of the gradient discretisation method. Gradient schemes are defined for the optimality system of the control problem. Error estimates for state, adjoint and control variables are derived. Superconvergence results for gradient schemes under realistic regularity assumptions on the exact solution is discussed. These super-convergence results are shown to apply to non-conforming $\mathbb{P}_1$ finite elements, and to the mixed/hybrid mimetic finite differences. Results of numerical experiments are demonstrated for the conforming, nonconforming and mixed/hybrid mimetic finite difference schemes.

Error estimates for the numerical approximation of a distributed optimal control problem governed by the von Kármán equations

In this paper, we discuss the numerical approximation of a distributed optimal control problem governed by the von Karman equations, defined in polygonal domains with point-wise control constraints. Conforming finite elements are employed to discretize the state and adjoint variables. The control is discretized using piece-wise constant approximations. A priori error estimates are derived for the state, adjoint and control variables under minimal regularity assumptions on the exact solution. Numerical results that justify the theoretical results are presented.

A Priori and A Posteriori Error Control of Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods for the Von Kármán Equations

This paper analyses discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DGFEM) to approximate a regular solution to the von Kármán equations defined on a polygonal domain. A discrete inf-sup condition sufficient for the stability of the discontinuous Galerkin discretization of a well-posed linear problem is established and this allows the proof of local existence and uniqueness of a discrete solution to the non-linear problem with a Banach fixed point theorem. The Newton scheme is locally second-order convergent and appears to be a robust solution strategy up to machine precision. A comprehensive a priori and a posteriori energy-norm error analysis relies on one sufficiently large stabilization parameter and sufficiently fine triangulations. In case the other stabilization parameter degenerates towards infinity, the DGFEM reduces to a novel $C^0$ interior penalty method (IPDG). Moreover, a reliable and efficient a posteriori error analysis immediately follows for the DGFEM of this paper, while the different norms in the known $C^0$-IPDG lead to complications with some non-residual type remaining terms. Numerical experiments confirm the best-approximation results and the equivalence of the error and the error estimators. A related adaptive mesh-refining algorithm leads to optimal empirical convergence rates for a non convex domain.

Improved $L^2$ estimate for gradient schemes, and super-convergence of the TPFA finite volume scheme

The gradient discretisation method is a generic framework that is applicable to a number of schemes for diffusion equations, and provides in particular generic error estimates in $L^2$ and $H^1$-like norms. In this paper, we establish an improved $L^2$ error estimate for gradient schemes. This estimate is applied to a family of gradient schemes, namely, the Hybrid Mimetic Mixed (HMM) schemes, and yields an $\mathcal O(h^2)$ super-convergence rate in $L^2$ norm, provided local compensations occur between the cell points used to define the scheme and the centers of mass of the cells. To establish this result, a modified HMM method is designed by just changing the quadrature of the source term; this modified HMM enjoys a super-convergence result even on meshes without local compensations. Finally, the link between HMM and Two-Point Flux Approximation (TPFA) finite volume schemes is exploited to partially answer a long-standing conjecture on the super-convergence of TPFA schemes.

A Nonconforming Finite Element Approximation for the von Karman Equations

In this paper, a nonconforming finite element method has been proposed and analyzed for the von Karman equations that describe bending of thin elastic plates. Optimal order error estimates in broken energy and $H^1$ norms are derived under minimal regularity assumptions. Numerical results that justify the theoretical results are presented.

Convergence of an adaptive mixed finite element method for general second order linear elliptic problems

The convergence of an adaptive mixed finite element method for general second order linear elliptic problems defined on simply connected bounded polygonal domains is analyzed in this paper. The main difficulties in the analysis are posed by the non-symmetric and indefinite form of the problem along with the lack of the orthogonality property in mixed finite element methods. The important tools in the analysis are a posteriori error estimators, quasi-orthogonality property and quasi-discrete reliability established using representation formula for the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas solution in terms of the Crouzeix-Raviart solution of the problem. An adaptive marking in each step for the local refinement is based on the edge residual and volume residual terms of the a posteriori estimator. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical analysis.

Error analysis of nonconforming and mixed FEMs for second-order linear non-selfadjoint and indefinite elliptic problems

The state-of-the art proof of a global inf-sup condition on mixed finite element schemes does not allow for an analysis of truly indefinite, second-order linear elliptic PDEs. This paper, therefore, first analyses a nonconforming finite element discretization which converges owing to some a priori $L^2$ error estimates even for reduced regularity on non-convex polygonal domains. An equivalence result of that nonconforming finite element scheme to the mixed finite element method (MFEM) leads to the well-posedness of the discrete solution and to a priori error estimates for the MFEM. The explicit residual-based a posteriori error analysis allows some reliable and efficient error control and motivates some adaptive discretization which improves the empirical convergence rates in three computational benchmarks.
