Grothendieck rings of ordered subgroups of $\mathbb{Q}$

Let $G$ be a proper subgroup of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $S_G$ be the set of primes $p$ for which $G$ is $p$-divisible. We show that the model-theoretic Grothendieck ring of the ordered abelian group $(G;+,<)$ is a quotient of $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})[T]/(T+T^2)$, where $q$ is the largest odd integer that divides $p-1$ for all $p \notin S_G$. This implies that the Grothendieck ring of $(G;+,<)$ is trivial in various salient cases, for example when $S_G$ is finite, or when $S_G$ does not contain some prime of the form $2^n+1$, $n\in \mathbb{N}$.

Integer-valued o-minimal functions

We study $\mathbb{R}_{\textrm{an},\exp}$-definable functions $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ that take integer values at all sufficiently large positive integers. If $|f(x)|= O\big(2^{(1+10^{-5})x}\big)$, then we find polynomials $P_1, P_2$ such that $f(x)=P_1(x)+P_2(x)2^x$ for all sufficiently large $x$. Our result parallels classical theorems of P\'olya and Selberg for entire functions and generalizes Wilkie's classification for the case of $|f(x)|= O(C^x)$, for some $C<2$. Let $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and $\gamma_k=\sum_{j=1}^{k} 1/j$. Extending Wilkie's theorem in a separate direction, we show that if $f$ is $k$-$\textit{concordant}$ and $|f(x)|= O(C^{x})$, for some $C<e^{\gamma_k}+1$, then $f$ must eventually be given by a polynomial. This is an analog of a result by Pila for entire functions.

Analytic Ax-Kochen-Ersov theory with lifts of the residue field and value group

We develop an extension theory for analytic valuation rings in order to establish Ax-Kochen-Ersov type results for these structures. New is that we can add in salient cases lifts of the residue field and the value group and show that the induced structure on the lifted residue field is just its field structure, and on the lifted value group is just its ordered abelian group structure. This restores an analogy with the non-analytic AKE-setting that was missing in earlier treatments of analytic AKE-theory.

On the Pila-Wilkie theorem

This expository paper gives an account of the Pila-Wilkie counting theorem and some of its extensions and generalizations. We use semialgebraic cell decomposition to simplify part of the original proof. We also include complete treatments of a result due to Pila and Bombieri and of the o-minimal Yomdin-Gromov theorem that are used in this proof. For the latter we follow Binyamini and Novikov.

The additive groups of $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Q}$ with predicates for being square-free

We consider the four structures $(\mathbb{Z}; \mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Z})$, $(\mathbb{Z}; <, \mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Z})$, $(\mathbb{Q}; \mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Q})$, and $(\mathbb{Q}; <, \mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Q})$ where $\mathbb{Z}$ is the additive group of integers, $\mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Z}$ is the set of $a \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $v_{p}(a) < 2$ for every prime $p$ and corresponding $p$-adic valuation $v_{p}$, $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathrm{Sqf}^\mathbb{Q}$ are defined likewise for rational numbers, and $<$ denotes the natural ordering on each of these domains. We prove that the second structure is model-theoretically wild while the other three structures are model-theoretically tame. Moreover, all these results can be seen as examples where number-theoretic randomness yields model-theoretic consequences.
