Indecomposable combinatorial games

In Combinatorial Game Theory, short game forms are defined recursively over all the positions the two players are allowed to move to. A form is decomposable if it can be expressed as a disjunctive sum of two forms with smaller birthday. If there are no such summands, then the form is indecomposable. The main contribution of this document is the characterization of the indecomposable nimbers and the characterization of the indecomposable numbers. More precisely, a nimber is indecomposable if and only if its size is a power of two, and a number is indecomposable if and only if its absolute value is less or equal than one.

Counting Domineering Positions

Domineering is a two player game played on a checkerboard in which one player places dominoes vertically and the other places them horizontally. We give bivariate generating polynomials enumerating Domineering positions by the number of each player's pieces. We enumerate all positions, maximal positions, and positions where one player has no move. Using these polynomials we count the number of positions that occur during alternating play. Our method extends to enumerating positions from mid-game positions and we include an analysis of a tournament game.

Finding Golden Nuggets by Reduction

We introduce a class of normal play partizan games, called Complementary Subtraction. Let $A$ denote your favorite set of positive integers. This is Left's subtraction set, whereas Right subtracts numbers not in $A$. The Golden Nugget Subtraction Game has the $A$ and $B$ sequences, from Wythoff's game, as the two complementary subtraction sets. As a function of the heap size, the maximum size of the canonical forms grows quickly. However, the value of the heap is either a number or, in reduced canonical form, a switch. We find the switches by using properties of the Fibonacci word and standard Fibonacci representations of integers. Moreover, these switches are invariant under shifts by certain Fibonacci numbers. The values that are numbers, however, are distinct, and we find a polynomial time bit characterization for them, via the ternary Fibonacci representation.

Misère-play Hackenbush Sprigs

A Hackenbush Sprig is a Hackenbush String with the ground edge colored green and the remaining edges either red or blue. We show that in canonical form a Sprig is a star-based number (the ordinal sum of star and a dyadic rational) in misère-play, as well as in normal-play. We find the outcome of a disjunctive sum of Sprigs in misère-play and show that it is the same as the outcome of that sum plus star in normal-play. Along the way it is shown that the sum of a Sprig and its negative is equivalent to 0 in the universe of misère-play dicotic games, answering a question of Allen.
