The Duality Symmetric String at Two-loops

The Tseytlin duality symmetric string makes manifest the $O(n,n)$ T-duality symmetry on the worldsheet at the expense of manifest Lorentz invariance. Here we consider the two-loop renormalisation of this model in the context of "cosmological" spacetimes consisting of an internal $n$-dimensional torus fibred over a one-dimensional base manifold. The lack of manifest Lorentz symmetry introduces a range of complexities in momenta loop integrals which we approach using different methods. Whilst the results do satisfy a number of key consistency criteria, we find however that the two-loop counter-terms are incompatible with $O(n,n)$ symmetry and obstruct the renormalisability of the duality symmetric string.

Superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics and Calogero model with OSp(N|2,R) symmetry

In spacetime dimension two, pure Yang-Mills possesses no physical degrees of freedom, and consequently it admits a supersymmetric extension to couple to an arbitrary number, N say, of Majorana-Weyl gauginos. This results in (N,0) super Yang-Mills. Further, its dimensional reduction to mechanics doubles the number of supersymmetries, from N to N+N, to include conformal supercharges, and leads to a superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with symmetry group OSp(N|2,R). We comment on its connection to AdS_2 \times S^{N-1} and reduction to a supersymmetric Calogero model.

A Double Sigma Model for Double Field Theory

We define a sigma model with doubled target space and calculate its background field equations. These coincide with generalised metric equation of motion of double field theory, thus the double field theory is the effective field theory for the sigma model.

Connecting T-duality invariant theories

We show that the vanishing of the one-loop beta-functional of the doubled formalism (which describes string theory on a torus fibration in which the fibres are doubled) is the same as the equation of motion of the recently proposed generalised metric formulation of double field theory restricted to this background: both are the vanishing of a generalised Ricci tensor. That this tensor arises in both backgrounds indicates the importance of a new doubled differential geometry for understanding both constructions.

Holographic Thermalization

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we probe the scale-dependence of thermalization in strongly coupled field theories following a quench, via calculations of two-point functions, Wilson loops and entanglement entropy in d=2,3,4. In the saddlepoint approximation these probes are computed in AdS space in terms of invariant geometric objects - geodesics, minimal surfaces and minimal volumes. Our calculations for two-dimensional field theories are analytical. In our strongly coupled setting, all probes in all dimensions share certain universal features in their thermalization: (1) a slight delay in the onset of thermalization, (2) an apparent non-analyticity at the endpoint of thermalization, (3) top-down thermalization where the UV thermalizes first. For homogeneous initial conditions the entanglement entropy thermalizes slowest, and sets a timescale for equilibration that saturates a causality bound over the range of scales studied. The growth rate of entanglement entropy density is nearly volume-independent for small volumes, but slows for larger volumes.

Introductory Lectures on Multiple Membranes

These lecture notes introduce the multiple membrane theories known as BLG and ABJM. We assume the reader is familiar with string theory, but not with M-theory, 11-dimensional supergravity or membranes. We therefore start with a background on M-theory and its extended objects before discussing BLG and ABJM. The link to string theory via dimensional reduction will be maintained throughout.

Background Field Equations for the Duality Symmetric String

This paper describes the background field equations for strings in T-duality symmetric formalisms in which the dimension of target space is doubled and the sigma model supplemented with constraints. These are calculated by demanding the vanishing of the beta-functional of the sigma model couplings in the doubled target space. We demonstrate the equivalence with the background field equations of the standard string sigma model.

Aspects of M-Theory Brane Interactions and String Theory Symmetries

The dissertation consists of two parts. The first presents an account of the effective worldvolume description of $N$ coincident M2-branes ending on an M5-brane in M-theory. It reviews Basu and Harvey's recent description of the worldvolume theory of the M2-branes in terms of a Bogomol'nyi equation, and its solution via a fuzzy (three-) funnel. Tests of the consistency of this picture are then performed and many of the issues with it are addressed. This is followed by a discussion of how a refinement of the fuzzy three-sphere algebra used can lead to the correct $N^{3/2}$ scaling of degrees of freedom for this system. A reduction of this Basu-Harvey picture to the D1-string picture of the D1-D3 intersection is then performed via constructing a reduction of the fuzzy-three sphere to the fuzzy two-sphere. The second part of the dissertation describes how a holomorphic factorisation argument can be used to demonstrate quantum equivalence of the doubled formalism of string theory with the standard formalism by deriving the partition function, including instanton and oscillator sectors.

A note on the M2-M5 brane system and fuzzy spheres

This note covers various aspects of recent attempts to describe membranes ending on fivebranes using fuzzy geometry. In particular, we examine the Basu-Harvey equation and its relation to the Nahm equation as well as the consequences of using a non-associative algebra for the fuzzy three-sphere. This produces the tantalising result that the fuzzy funnel solution corresponding to Q coincident membranes ending on a five-brane has $Q^{3/2}$ degrees of freedom.

Five-brane Calibrations and Fuzzy Funnels

We present a generalisation of the Basu-Harvey equation that describes membranes ending on intersecting five-brane configurations corresponding to various calibrated geometries.
