Moduli Stabilisation on the Worldsheet

We consider compactifications of type II string theory using exact internal CFT's with central charge $c=9+ε$, $|ε| \ll 1$, leading to an effective potential for the dilaton. For $ε>0$ the potential is positive and the dilaton is ultimately driven to weak coupling. For $ε<0$ the dilaton is driven to strong coupling, but we can stabilise the background by including D-branes. The resulting minimum admits an $AdS_4$ solution where the cosmological constant is of the order $ε^3$ and the string coupling constant is of order $ε$. Furthermore these CFT's typically do not possess any massless or tachyonic modes. Thus these vacua provide exact CFT descriptions of moduli stabilisation in weakly coupled string theory.

Constraints on Automorphic Forms of Higher Derivative Terms from Compactification

By dimensionally reducing the higher derivative corrections of ten-dimensional IIB theory on a torus we deduce constraints on the E_{n+1} automorphic forms that occur in d=10-n dimensions. In particular we argue that these automorphic forms involve the representation of E_{n+1} with fundamental weight λ^{n+1}, which is also the representation to which the string charges in d dimensions belong. We also consider a similar calculation for the reduction of higher derivative terms in eleven-dimensional M-theory.

Nonabelian (2,0) Tensor Multiplets and 3-algebras

Using 3-algebras we obtain a nonabelian system of equations that furnish a representation of the (2,0)-supersymmetric tensor multiplet. The on-shell conditions are quite restrictive so that the system can be reduced to five-dimensional gauge theory along with six-dimensional abelian (2,0) tensor multiplets. We briefly discuss possible applications to D4-branes using a spacelike reduction and M5-branes using a null reduction.

Perturbation Theory From Automorphic Forms

Using our previous construction of Eisenstein-like automorphic forms we derive formulae for the perturbative and non-perturbative parts for any group and representation. The result is written in terms of the weights of the representation and the derivation is largely group theoretical. Specialising to the E_{n+1} groups relevant to type II string theory and the representation associated with node n+1 of the E_{n+1} Dynkin diagram we explicitly find the perturbative part in terms of String Theory variables, such as the string coupling g_d and volume V_n. For dimensions seven and higher we find that the perturbation theory involves only two terms. In six dimensions we construct the SO(5,5) automorphic form using the vector representation. Although these automorphic forms are generally compatible with String Theory, the one relevant to R^4 involves terms with g_d^{-6} and so is problematic. We then study a constrained SO(5,5) automorphic form, obtained by summing over null vectors, and compute its perturbative part. We find that it is consistent with String Theory and makes precise predictions for the perturbative results. We also study the unconstrained automorphic forms for E_6 in the 27 representation and E_7 in the 133 representation, giving their perturbative part and commenting on their role in String Theory.

Relating U(N)xU(N) to SU(N)xSU(N) Chern-Simons Membrane theories

By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the (SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.

M2-Branes and Background Fields

We discuss the coupling of multiple M2-branes to the background 3-form and 6-form gauge fields of eleven-dimensional supergravity, including the coupling of the Fermions. In particular we show in detail how a natural generalization of the Myers flux-terms, along with the resulting curvature of the background metric, leads to mass terms in the effective field theory.

Three-Algebras and N=6 Chern-Simons Gauge Theories

We derive the general form for a three-dimensional scale-invariant field theory with N=6 supersymmetry, SU(4) R-symmetry and a U(1) global symmetry. The results can be written in terms of a 3-algebra in which the triple product is not antisymmetric. For a specific choice of 3-algebra we obtain the N=6 theories that have been recently proposed as models for M2-branes in an R^8/Z_k orbifold background.

Membranes on an Orbifold

We harvest clues to aid with the interpretation of the recently discovered N=8 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with SO(4) gauge symmetry. The theory is argued to describe two membranes moving in the orbifold R8/Z2. At level k=1 and k=2, the classical moduli space M coincides with the infra-red moduli space of SO(4) and SO(5) super Yang-Mills theory respectively. For higher Chern-Simons level, the moduli space is a quotient of M. At a generic point in the moduli space, the massive spectrum is proportional to the area of the triangle formed by the two membranes and the orbifold fixed point.

Comments on Multiple M2-branes

Recently a three-dimensional field theory was derived that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of the worldvolume action for multiple M2-branes. In this note we examine several physical predictions of this model and show that they are in agreement with expected M2-brane dynamics. In particular, we discuss the quantization of the Chern-Simons coefficient, the vacuum moduli space, a massive deformation leading to fuzzy three-sphere vacua, and a possible large n limit. In this large n limit, the fuzzy funnel solution correctly reproduces the mass of an M5-brane.

The M5-brane on K3 x T^2

We discuss the low energy effective theory of an M5-brane wrapped on a smooth holomorphic four-cycle of K3 x T^2, including the special case of T^6. In particular we give the lowest order equations of motion and resolve a puzzle concerning the counting of massless modes that was reported in hep-th/9906094. In order to find agreement with black hole entropy and anomaly inflow arguments we propose that some of the moduli become massive.

Gauge Symmetry and Supersymmetry of Multiple M2-Branes

In previous work we proposed a field theory model for multiple M2-branes based on an algebra with a totally antisymmetric triple product. In this paper we gauge a symmetry that arises from the algebra's triple product. We then construct a supersymmetric theory that is consistent with all the symmetries expected of a multiple M2-brane theory: 16 supersymmetries, conformal invariance, and an SO(8) R-symmetry that acts on the eight transverse scalars. The gauge field is not dynamical. The result is a new type of maximally supersymmetric gauge theory in three dimensions.

Modeling Multiple M2's

We investigate the worldvolume theory that describes N coincident M2-branes ending on an M5 brane. We argue that the fields that describe the transverse spacetime coordinates take values in a non-associative algebra. We postulate a set of supersymmetry transformations and find that they close into a novel gauge symmetry. We propose a three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric action to describe the truncation of the full theory to the scalar and spinor fields, and show how a Basu-Harvey fuzzy funnel arises as the BPS solution to this theory.

Duality Groups, Automorphic Forms and Higher Derivative Corrections

We study the higher derivative corrections that occur in type II superstring theories in ten dimensions or less. Assuming invariance under a discrete duality group G(Z) we show that the generic functions of the scalar fields that occur can be identified with automorphic forms. We then give a systematic method to construct automorphic forms from a given group G(Z) together with a chosen subgroup H and a linear representation of G(Z). This construction is based on the theory of non-linear realizations and we find that the automorphic forms contain the weights of G. We also carry out the dimensional reduction of the generic higher derivative corrections of the IIB theory to three dimensions and find that the weights of E_8 occur generalizing previous results of the authors on M-theory. Since the automorphic forms of this theory contain the weights of E_8 we can interpret the occurrence of weights in the dimensional reduction as evidence for an underlying U-duality symmetry.

Closed strings from decaying D-branes

We compute the emission of closed string radiation from homogeneous rolling tachyons. For an unstable decaying D$p$-brane the radiated energy is infinite to leading order for $p\leq 2$ and finite for $p>2$. The closed string state produced by a decaying brane is closely related to the state produced by D-instantons at a critical Euclidean distance from $t=0$. In the case of a D0 brane one can cutoff this divergence so that we get a finite energy final state which would be the state that the brane decays into.

Enhanced Coset Symmetries and Higher Derivative Corrections

After dimensional reduction to three dimensions, the lowest order effective actions for pure gravity, M-theory and the Bosonic string admit an enhanced symmetry group. In this paper we initiate study of how this enhancement is affected by the inclusion of higher derivative terms. In particular we show that the coefficients of the scalar fields associated to the Cartan subalgebra are given by weights of the enhanced symmetry group.

Flux and Freund-Rubin Superpotentials in M-theory

We discuss the effective action for weak G_2 compactifications of M-theory. The presence of fluxes acts as a source for the the axions and drives the Freund-Rubin parameter to zero. The result is a stable non-supersymmetric vacuum with a negative cosmological constant. We also give the superpotential which generates the effective potential and discuss a simple model which aims to incorporate the effects of supersymmetry breaking by the gauge sector.
