Conjugacy Distinguished Cosets in Hyperbolic $3$-Manifold Groups

A subset $S$ of a group $G$ is \emph{conjugacy distinguished} if the union of all conjugates of $S$ is closed in the profinite topology on $G$. We prove that if $M = \mathbb{H}^3/\Gamma$ is a hyperbolic $3$-manifold of finite volume, $g \in \Gamma$, and $H$ is an abelian subgroup of $\Gamma$, then the coset $gH$ is conjugacy distinguished in $\Gamma$. A subset $S \subset G$ is \emph{conjugacy distinguished from a class of subgroups} if, for every $K$ in the class that is disjoint from the union of conjugates of $S$, there exists a homomorphism $\varphi \colon G \rightarrow F$, where $F$ is a finite group, such that $\varphi(K)$ is disjoint from the union of conjugates of $\varphi(S)$. In previous work, we proved that if $M = \mathbb{H}^3/\Gamma$ is a hyperbolic $3$-manifold of finite volume, then a coset of a maximal parabolic subgroup with cusp $C$ is conjugacy distinguished from the class of maximal parabolic subgroups of $\Gamma$ with cusps distinct from $C$. We extend this result by proving that a coset of a loxodromic subgroup is conjugacy distinguished from the class of maximal parabolic subgroups of $\Gamma$.

Knot complements decomposing into prisms

We describe four hyperbolic knot complements in $\mathbb{S}^3$, each of which covers a prism orbifold: the quotient of $\mathbb{H}^3$ by the action of a discrete group generated by reflections in the faces of a polyhedron that has the combinatorial type of a triangular prism. The prism orbifolds are rigid-cusped and contain compact, totally geodesic hyperbolic triangle sub-orbifolds; as a result, the knot complements covering them have hidden symmetries and contain closed, embedded, totally geodesic surfaces.

Cusp types of quotients of hyperbolic knot complements

This paper completes a classification of the types of orientable and non-orientable cusps that can arise in the quotients of hyperbolic knot complements. In particular, $S^2(2,4,4)$ cannot be the cusp cross-section of any orbifold quotient of a hyperbolic knot complement. Furthermore, if a knot complement covers an orbifold with a $S^2(2,3,6)$ cusp, it also covers an orbifold with a $S^2(3,3,3)$ cusp. We end with a discussion that shows all cusp types arise in the quotients of link complements.

On the complexity of cusped non-hyperbolicity

We show that the problem of showing that a cusped 3-manifold M is not hyperbolic is in NP, assuming $S^3$-RECOGNITION is in coNP. To this end, we show that IRREDUCIBLE TOROIDAL RECOGNITION lies in NP. Along the way we unconditionally recover SATELLITE KNOT RECOGNITION lying in NP. This was previously known only assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Our key contribution is to certify closed essential normal surfaces as essential in polynomial time in compact orientable irreducible $\partial$-irreducible triangulations. Our work is made possible by recent work of Lackenby showing several basic decision problems in 3-manifold topology are in NP or coNP.

Small $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F})$ representations of Seifert fiber space groups

Let $M$ be a Seifert fiber space with non-abelian fundamental group and admitting a triangulation with $t$ tetrahedra. We show that there is a non-abelian $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F})$ quotient where $|\mathbb F| < c(2^{20t}3^{120t})$ for an absolute constant $c>0$ and use this to show that the lens space recognition problem lies in coNP for Seifert fiber space input. We end with a discussion of our results in the context of distinguishing lens spaces from other $3$--manifolds more generally.

Dehn surgery and hyperbolic knot complements without hidden symmetries

Neumann and Reid conjecture that there are exactly three knot complements which admit hidden symmetries. This paper establishes several results that provide evidence for the conjecture. Our main technical tools provide obstructions to having infinitely many fillings of a cusped manifold produce knot complements admitting hidden symmetries. Applying these tools, we show for any two-bridge link complement, at most finitely many fillings of one cusp can be covered by knot complements admitting hidden symmetries. We also show that the figure-eight knot complement is the unique knot complement with volume less than $6v_0 \approx 6.0896496$ that admits hidden symmetries. We then conclude with two independent proofs that among hyperbolic knot complements only the figure-eight knot complement can admit hidden symmetries and cover a filling of the two-bridge link complement $\mathbb{S}^3\setminus 6^2_2$. Each of these proofs shows that the technical tools established earlier can be made effective.
