On the convexity theory of generating functions

In this paper, we extend our convexity theory for $C^2$ cost functions in optimal transportation to more general generating functions, which were originally introduced by the second author to extend the framework of optimal transportation to embrace near field geometric optics. In particular we provide an alternative geometric treatment to the previous analytic approach using differential inequalities, which also gives a different derivation of the invariance of the fundamental regularity conditions under duality. We also extend our local theory to cover the strict version of these conditions for $C^2$ cost and generating functions.

A note on second derivative estimates for Monge-Ampe`re type equations

In this note we revisit previous Pogorelov type interior and global second derivative estimates of the author, F. Jiang and J. Liu for solutions of Monge-Amp`ere type partial differential equations. Taking account of recent strict convexity regularity results of Guillen, Kitagawa and Rankin, and following our earlier work in the optimal transportation case, we remove the monotonicity assumptions in the more general case of generated Jacobian equations and consequently in the subsequent application to classical solvability and global regularity for second boundary value problems.

On the local theory of prescribed Jacobian equations revisited

In this paper we revisit our previous study of the local theory of prescribed Jacobian equations associated with generating functions, which are extensions of cost functions in the theory of optimal transportation. In particular, as foreshadowed in the earlier work, we provide details pertaining to the relaxation of a monotonicity condition A4w in the underlying convexity theory and the consequent classical regularity. Taking advantage of recent work of Kitagawa and Guillen, we also extend our classical regularity theory to the weak form A3w of the critical matrix convexity conditions.

Oblique boundary value problems for augmented Hessian equations III

In bounded domains, without any geometric conditions, we study the existence and uniqueness of globally Lipschitz and interior strong C^{1,1}, (and classical C^2), solutions of general semilinear oblique boundary value problems for degenerate, (and non-degenerate), augmented Hessian equations, with strictly regular associated matrix functions. By establishing local second derivative estimates at the boundary and proving viscosity comparison principles, we show that the solution is correspondingly smooth near boundary points where the appropriate uniform convexity is satisfied.

On the local theory of prescribed Jacobian equations

We develop the fundamentals of a local regularity theory for prescribed Jacobian equations which extend the corresponding results for optimal transportation equations. In this theory the cost function is extended to a generating function through dependence on an additional scalar variable. In particular we recover in this generality the local regularity theory for potentials of Ma,Trudinger and Wang, along with the subsequent development of the underlying convexity theory.

On the Dirichlet problem for Monge-Ampere type equations

In this paper, we prove second derivative estimates together with classical solvability for the Dirichlet problem of certain Monge-Ampere type equations under sharp hypotheses. In particular we assume that the matrix function in the augmented Hessian is regular in the sense used by Trudinger and Wang in their study of global regularity in optimal transportation [28] as well as the existence of a smooth subsolution. The latter hypothesis replaces a barrier condition also used in their work. The applications to optimal transportation and prescribed Jacobian equations are also indicated.

On the second boundary value problem for Monge-Ampere type equations and optimal transportation

This paper is concerned with the existence of globally smooth solutions for the second boundary value problem for Monge-Ampere equations and the application to regularity of potentials in optimal transportation. The cost functions satisfy a weak form of our condition A3, under which we proved interior regularity in a recent paper with Xi-nan Ma. Consequently they include the quadratic cost function case of Caffarelli and Urbas as well as the various examples in the earlier work. The approach is through the derivation of global estimates for second derivatives of solutions.

On Hessian measures for non-commuting vector fields

Previous results on Hessian measures by Trudinger and Wang are extended to the subelliptic case. Specifically we prove the weak continuity of the 2-Hessian operator, with respect to local L1 convergence, for a system of m vector fields of step 2 and derive gradient estimates for the corresponding k-convex functions, k=1,2....m, for arbitrary step.

The Yamabe problem for higher order curvatures

Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n. The k-curvature, for k=1,2,..n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k=1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions to the k-Yamabe problem was recently proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky for k>n/2. In this paper we prove the existence of solutions for the remaining cases k <n/2, k=n/2, assuming that the equation is variational.
