The scattering matrix for the p-form Laplacian on asymptotically conic manifolds

We give an explicit description of the scattering matrix for the Hodge-Laplacian on co-closed p-forms on asymptotically conic manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$. We develop generalized eigenfunctions and a functional calculus to describe the result, a departure from the Fourier Integral Operators used in the scalar case. Starting from the Hodge decomposition at infinity, we construct generalized eigenforms which are co-closed and establish a spectral representation for the p-form Hodge Laplacian. The special case of dimension 3 for $p=1$ characterises the electric field for Maxwell's equations.

$L^p$-spectral theory for the Laplacian on forms

In this article, we find sufficient conditions on an open Riemannian manifold so that a Weyl criterion holds for the $L^p$-spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms, and also prove the decomposition of the $L^p$-spectrum depending on the order of the forms. We then show that the resolvent set of an operator such as the Laplacian on $L^p$ lies outside a parabola whenever the volume of the manifold has an exponential volume growth rate, removing the requirement on the manifold to be of bounded geometry. We conclude by providing a detailed description of the $L^p$ spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms over hyperbolic space.

A Note on the Spectrum of Magnetic Dirac Operators

In this article, we study the spectrum of the magnetic Dirac operator, and the magnetic Dirac operator with potential over complete Riemannian manifolds. We find sufficient conditions on the potentials as well as the manifold so that the spectrum is either maximal, or discrete. We also show that magnetic Dirac operators can have a dense set of eigenvalues.

The Laplace spectrum on conformally compact manifolds

We consider the spectrum of the Laplace operator acting on $\mathcal{L}^p$ over a conformally compact manifold for $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. We prove that for $p \neq 2$ this spectrum always contains an open region of the complex plane. We further show that the spectrum is contained within a certain parabolic region of the complex plane. These regions depend on the value of $p$, the dimension of the manifold, and the values of the sectional curvatures approaching the boundary.

On the $L^p$ Spectrum of the Dirac operator

Our main goal in the present paper is to expand the known class of open manifolds over which the $L^2$-spectrum of a general Dirac operator and its square is maximal. To achieve this, we first find sufficient conditions on the manifold so that the $L^p$-spectrum of the Dirac operator and its square is independent of $p$ for $p\geq 1$. Using the $L^1$-spectrum, which is simpler to compute, we generalize the class of manifolds over which the $L^p$-spectrum of the Dirac operator is the real line for all $p$. We also show that by applying the generalized Weyl criterion, we can find large classes of manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature, or which are asymptotically flat, such that the $L^2$-spectrum of a general Dirac operator and its square is maximal.

Connected essential spectrum: the case of differential forms

In this article we prove that, over complete manifolds of dimension $n$ with vanishing curvature at infinity, the essential spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian on differential $k$-forms is a connected interval for $0\leq k\leq n$. The main idea is to show that large balls of these manifolds, which capture their spectrum, are close in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to product manifolds. We achieve this by carefully describing the collapsed limits of these balls. Then, via a new generalized version of the classical Weyl criterion, we demonstrate that very rough test forms that we get from the $\varepsilon$-approximation maps can be used to show that the essential spectrum is a connected interval. We also prove that, under a weaker condition where the Ricci curvature is asymptotically nonnegative, the essential spectrum on $k$-forms is $[0,\infty)$, but only for $0\leq k\leq q$ and $n-q \leq k\leq n$ for some integer $ q\geq 1$ which depends the structure of the manifolds at infinity.

Eigenvalue Estimates on Bakry-Emery Manifolds

We demonstrate lower bounds for the eigenvalues of compact Bakry-Emery manifolds with and without boundary. The lower bounds for the first eigenvalue rely on a generalised maximum principle which allows gradient estimates in the Riemannian setting to be directly applied to the Bakry-Emery setting. Lower bounds for all eigenvalues are demonstrated using heat kernel estimates and a suitable Sobolev inequality.

The spectrum of the Laplacian on forms

In this article we prove a generalization of Weyl's criterion for the spectrum of a self-adjoint nonnegative operator on a Hilbert space. We will apply this new criterion in combination with Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov and Cheeger-Colding theory to study the $k$-form essential spectrum over a complete manifold with vanishing curvature at infinity or asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature. In addition, we will apply the generalized Weyl criterion to study the variation of the spectrum of a self-adjoint operator under continuous perturbations of the operator. In the particular case of the Laplacian on $k$-forms over a complete manifold we will use these analytic tools to find significantly stronger results for its spectrum including its behavior under a continuous deformation of the metric of the manifold.

The spectrum of the Laplacian on forms over flat manifolds

In this article we prove that the spectrum of the Laplacian on $k$-forms over a noncompact flat manifold is always a connected closed interval of the nonnegative real line. The proof is based on a detailed decomposition of the structure of flat manifolds.

The heat trace for the drifting Laplacian and Schrödinger operators on manifolds

We study the heat trace for both the drifting Laplacian as well as Schrödinger operators on compact Riemannian manifolds. In the case of a finite regularity potential or weight function, we prove the existence of a partial (six term) asymptotic expansion of the heat trace for small times as well as a suitable remainder estimate. We also demonstrate that the more precise asymptotic behavior of the remainder is determined by and conversely distinguishes higher (Sobolev) regularity on the potential or weight function. In the case of a smooth weight function, we determine the full asymptotic expansion of the heat trace for the drifting Laplacian for small times. We then use the heat trace to study the asymptotics of the eigenvalue counting function. In both cases the Weyl law coincides with the Weyl law for the Riemannian manifold with the standard Laplace-Beltrami operator. We conclude by demonstrating isospectrality results for the drifting Laplacian on compact manifolds.

Initial behavior of solutions to the Yang-Mills heat equation

We explore the small-time behavior of solutions to the Yang-Mills heat equation with rough initial data. We consider solutions $A(t)$ with initial value $A_0\in H_{1/2}(M)$, where $M$ is a bounded convex region in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or all of $\mathbb{R}^3$. The behavior, as $t\downarrow 0$, of the $L^p(M)$ norms of the time derivatives of $A(t)$ and its curvature $B(t)$ will be determined for $p=2$ and $6$, along with the $H_1(M)$ norm of these derivatives.

Neumann domination for the Yang-Mills heat equation

Long time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Yang-Mills heat equation have been proven over a compact 3-manifold with boundary for initial data of finite energy. In the present paper we improve on previous estimates by using a Neumann domination technique that allows us to get much better pointwise bounds on the magnetic field. As in the earlier work, we focus on Dirichlet, Neumann and Marini boundary conditions. In addition, we show that the Wilson Loop functions, gauge invariantly regularized, converge as the parabolic time goes to infinity.

The $L^1$ Liouville Property on Weighted manifolds

We consider a complete noncompact smooth metric measure space $(M^n,g,e^{-f} dv)$ and the associated drifting Laplacian. We find sufficient conditions on the geometry of the space so that every nonnegative $f$-subharmonic function with bounded weighted $L^1$ norm is constant.

The essential spectrum of the Laplacian

In this article we prove a generalization of Weyl's criterion for the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space. We then apply this criterion to the Laplacian on functions over open manifolds and get new results for its essential spectrum.

Heat kernel estimates and the essential spectrum on weighted manifolds

We consider a complete noncompact smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ with a weighted measure and the associated drifting Laplacian. We demonstrate that whenever the $q$-Bakry-Émery Ricci tensor on $M$ is bounded below, then we can obtain an upper bound estimate for the heat kernel of the drifting Laplacian from the upper bound estimates of the heat kernels of the Laplacians on a family of related warped product spaces. We apply these results to study the essential spectrum of the drifting Laplacian on $M$.

The Yang-Mills heat semigroup on three-manifolds with boundary

Long time existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Yang-Mills heat equation is proven over a compact 3-manifold with smooth boundary. The initial data is taken to be a Lie algebra valued connection form in the Sobolev space $H_1$. Three kinds of boundary conditions are explored, Dirichlet type, Neumann type and Marini boundary conditions. The last is a nonlinear boundary condition, specified by setting the normal component of the curvature to zero on the boundary. The Yang-Mills heat equation is a weakly parabolic non-linear equation. We use a technique of Donaldson and Sadun to convert it to a parabolic equation and then gauge transform the solution of the parabolic equation back to a solution of the original equation. Apriori estimates are developed by first establishing a gauge invariant version of the Gaffney-Friedrichs inequality. A gauge invariant regularization procedure for solutions is also established. Uniqueness holds upon imposition of boundary conditions on only two of the three components of the connection form because of weak parabolicity. This work is motivated by possible applications to quantum field theory.
