Reheating after Starobinsky Inflation in the Jordan Frame

We investigate gravitational reheating in the Starobinsky model in the Jordan frame, where inflation is driven by an $R^2$ modification of gravity with no explicit inflaton field. In this description, reheating proceeds exclusively through gravitational particle production triggered by the oscillations of the Ricci scalar after the end of inflation. We analyze the post-inflationary background evolution and show that an effective fluid emerging from the modified gravitational dynamics behaves as pressureless matter during the oscillatory phase. Including the backreaction of the produced particles, we demonstrate that the Ricci scalar oscillations acquire an exponential damping, consistently terminating particle production. Solving the coupled background and Boltzmann equations, we obtain a reheating temperature $T_{\mathrm{reh}} \sim 2 \times 10^{9}$ GeV. We finally compare the Jordan and Einstein frame descriptions and argue that, although classically equivalent, they can lead to distinct microphysical interpretations and quantitative predictions for reheating once quantum effects are taken into account.

Bosonic and fermionic statistics in nonperturbative quantum gravity

The relation between spin and statistics in quantum field theory relies on Poincar\'e invariance, a symmetry that is lost in the presence of a gravitational field, and replaced in general relativity by the principle of general covariance. In a nonperturbative approach to quantum gravity, beyond the picture of gravitational perturbations propagating on a flat background, it is an open question whether the gravitational field must still satisfy a bosonic statistics. By implementing the principle of general covariance through the requirement of invariance under active diffeomorphisms in loop quantum gravity, we find that the space of kinematical states of the gravitational field includes not only bosonic states, but also subspaces of fermionic and mixed statistics.

Nonlocal correlations for semiclassical states in loop quantum gravity

We compute the two-point correlation function of the area operator for semiclassical states of loop quantum gravity in the limit of large spins. The cases of intrinsic and extrinsic coherent states are considered, along with a new class of semiclassical states constructed as perturbations of Livine-Speziale coherent states. For the usual coherent states, the correlations are shown to be short-ranged, decaying exponentially with the distance. Introducing perturbations given by correlated elementary excitations and decays of the gravitational field along pairs of loops, we obtain new states that, while preserving the peakedness properties of the unperturbed states, can also display long-ranged correlations. The perturbed coherent states include examples reproducing the typical decay of correlations for quantum fluctuations of the geometry associated with free gravitons on a background metric. Such a behavior is a natural requirement for the compatibility of semiclassical states in quantum gravity with the physical regime pictured by perturbative quantum gravity.

Gravitational reheating in Starobinsky inflation

We investigate the possibility of achieving post-inflationary reheating exclusively through the gravitational interaction in Starobinsky inflation, which itself assumes nothing but gravity. We consider the possibility that the reheating sector couples to gravity via a non-minimal coupling. Our analysis is performed both in a perturbative and in a non-perturbative approach, where particle production is computed from Bogoliubov coefficients. Our findings indicate that, for a minimal coupling, a reheating temperature $T_\text{reh}\sim 10^{8}$~GeV is obtained, with a reheating duration of approximately 21 $e$-folds. We also show that non perturbative gravitational production during preheating can lead to maximum temperatures of the order of $10^{12}$ GeV. This shows that the gravitational interaction could be the sole responsible for reheating the Universe after inflation, without the need to assume other \emph{ad hoc} inflaton interactions.

Effective geometry of Bell-network states on a dipole graph

Bell-network states are a class of entangled states of the geometry that satisfy an area-law for the entanglement entropy in a limit of large spins and are automorphism-invariant, for arbitrary graphs. We present a comprehensive analysis of the effective geometry of Bell-network states on a dipole graph. Our main goal is to provide a detailed characterization of the quantum geometry of a class of diffeomorphism-invariant, area-law states representing homogeneous and isotropic configurations in loop quantum gravity, which may be explored as boundary states for the dynamics of the theory. We found that the average geometry at each node in the dipole graph does not match that of a flat tetrahedron. Instead, the expected values of the geometric observables satisfy relations that are characteristic of spherical tetrahedra. The mean geometry is accompanied by fluctuations with considerable relative dispersion for the dihedral angle, and perfectly correlated for the two nodes.

Pre-inflationary scalar perturbations on closed universes in loop quantum cosmology

The inflationary and pre-inflationary evolution of scalar modes of cosmological perturbations in a closed universe is analyzed for a loop quantum cosmology model with an inflationary regime consistent with the constraints on inflation derived from observations of the cosmic microwave background. The effective background dynamics includes a bounce induced by quantum gravity effects. Initial conditions for the perturbations are set before the bounce, and the perturbations are numerically evolved until the end of inflation, allowing the determination of the primordial power spectrum for comoving curvature perturbations. The power spectrum includes corrections due to the presence of spatial curvature and excitations produced before the onset of slow-roll inflation. The deviations from the usual power-law spectrum can be significant for observable modes even for spatial curvatures much smaller than the observational limit obtained without considering the pre-inflationary evolution of the perturbations.

Gravitational quantum switch on a superposition of spherical shells

In the absence of a complete theory of quantum gravity, phenomenological models built upon minimal assumptions have been explored for the analysis of possible quantum effects in gravitational systems. Implications of a superposition of geometries have been considered in such models, including the occurrence of processes with indefinite order. In a gravitational quantum switch, in particular, the order of operations applied by two agents on a target system is entangled with the state of the geometry. We consider a model describing the superposition of geometries produced by distinct arrangements of spherical mass shells, and show that a protocol for the implementation of a gravitational quantum switch can be formulated in such a system. The geometries in superposition are identical in an exterior region outside a given radius, and differ within such a radius. The exterior region provides a classical frame from which the superposition of geometries in the interior region can be probed. One of the agents crosses the interior region and becomes entangled with the geometry, which is explored as a resource for the implementation of the quantum switch. Novel features of the protocol include the superposition of nonisometric geometries, the existence of a region with a definite geometry, and the fact that the agent that experiences the superposition of geometries is in free fall, preventing information on the global geometry to be obtained from within its laboratory.

Cosmological states in loop quantum gravity on homogeneous graphs

We introduce a class of states characterized by proposed conditions of homogeneity and isotropy in loop quantum gravity and construct concrete examples given by Bell-network states on a special class of homogeneous graphs. Such states provide new representations of cosmological spaces that can be explored for the formulation of cosmological models in the context of loop quantum gravity. We show that their local geometry is described in an automorphism-invariant manner by one-node observables analogous to the one-body observables used in many-body quantum mechanics, and compute the density matrix representing the restriction of global states to the algebra of one-node observables. The von Neumann entropy of this density matrix provides a notion of entanglement entropy of a local region which respects automorphism-invariance and can be applied to states involving superpositions of distinct graphs.

Quantum switch in the gravity of Earth

We introduce a protocol for a quantum switch in the gravitational field of a spherical mass and determine the time interval required for its realization in the gravity of Earth. One of the agents that perform operations with indefinite order is a quantum system in a path superposition state. Entanglement between its proper time and position is explored as a resource for the implementation of the quantum switch. The realization of the proposed protocol would probe the physical regime described by quantum mechanics on curved spacetimes, which has not yet been explored experimentally.

Entanglement production in the dynamical Casimir effect at parametric resonance

The particles produced from the vacuum in the dynamical Casimir effect are highly entangled. In order to quantify the correlations generated by the process of vacuum decay induced by moving mirrors, we study the entanglement evolution in the dynamical Casimir effect by computing the time-dependent Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropy analytically in arbitrary dimensions. We consider the system at parametric resonance, where the effect is enhanced. We find that, in (1+1) dimensions, the entropies grow logarithmically for large times, $S_A(τ)\sim\frac{1}{2}\log(τ)$, while in higher dimensions (n+1) the growth is linear, $S_A(t)\sim λ\,τ$ where $λ$ can be identified with the Lyapunov exponent of a classical instability in the system. In $(1+1)$ dimensions, strong interactions among field modes prevent the parametric resonance from manifesting as a Lyapunov instability, leading to a sublinear entropy growth associated with a constant rate of particle production in the resonant mode. Interestingly, the logarithmic growth comes with a pre-factor with $1/2$ which cannot occur in time-periodic systems with finitely many degrees of freedom and is thus a special property of bosonic field theories.

Gluing polyhedra with entanglement in loop quantum gravity

In a spin-network basis state, nodes of the graph describe un-entangled quantum regions of space, quantum polyhedra. In this paper we show how entanglement between intertwiner degrees of freedom enforces gluing conditions for neighboring quantum polyhedra. In particular we introduce Bell-network states, entangled states defined via squeezed vacuum techniques. We study correlations of quantum polyhedra in a dipole, a pentagram and a generic graph. We find that vector geometries, structures with neighboring polyhedra having adjacent faces glued back-to-back, arise from Bell-network states. We also discuss the relation to Regge geometries. The results presented show clearly the role that entanglement plays in the gluing of neighboring quantum regions of space.

Linear growth of the entanglement entropy and the Kolmogorov-Sinai rate

The rate of entropy production in a classical dynamical system is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy rate $h_{\mathrm{KS}}$ given by the sum of all positive Lyapunov exponents of the system. We prove a quantum version of this result valid for bosonic systems with unstable quadratic Hamiltonian. The derivation takes into account the case of time-dependent Hamiltonians with Floquet instabilities. We show that the entanglement entropy $S_A$ of a Gaussian state grows linearly for large times in unstable systems, with a rate $Λ_A \leq h_{KS}$ determined by the Lyapunov exponents and the choice of the subsystem $A$. We apply our results to the analysis of entanglement production in unstable quadratic potentials and due to periodic quantum quenches in many-body quantum systems. Our results are relevant for quantum field theory, for which we present three applications: a scalar field in a symmetry-breaking potential, parametric resonance during post-inflationary reheating and cosmological perturbations during inflation. Finally, we conjecture that the same rate $Λ_A$ appears in the entanglement growth of chaotic quantum systems prepared in a semiclassical state.

Tensor perturbations during inflation in a spatially closed Universe

In a recent paper [17], we studied the evolution of the background geometry and scalar perturbations in an inflationary, spatially closed Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model having constant positive spatial curvature and spatial topology $\mathbb S^3$. Due to the spatial curvature, the early phase of slow-roll inflation is modified, leading to suppression of power in the scalar power spectrum at large angular scales. In this paper, we extend the analysis to include tensor perturbations. We find that --- similarly to the scalar perturbations --- the tensor power spectrum also shows power suppression for long wavelength modes. The correction to the tensor spectrum is limited to the very long wavelength modes, therefore the resulting observable CMB B-mode polarization spectrum remains practically the same as in the standard scenario with flat spatial sections. However, since both the tensor and scalar power spectra are modified, there are scale dependent corrections to the tensor-to-scalar ratio that lead to violation of the standard slow-roll consistency relation.

Inflation in the closed FLRW model and the CMB

Recent cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations put strong constraints on the spatial curvature via estimation of the parameter $Ω_k$ assuming an almost scale invariant primordial power spectrum. We study the evolution of the background geometry and gauge-invariant scalar perturbations in an inflationary closed FLRW model and calculate the primordial power spectrum. We find that the inflationary dynamics is modified due to the presence of spatial curvature, leading to corrections to the nearly scale invariant power spectrum at the end of inflation. When evolved to the surface of last scattering, the resulting temperature anisotropy spectrum ($C_{\ell}^{TT}$) shows deficit of power at low multipoles ($\ell<20$). By comparing our results with the recent Planck data we discuss the role of spatial curvature in accounting for CMB anomalies and in the estimation of the parameter $Ω_k$. Since the curvature effects are limited to low multipoles, the Planck estimation of cosmological parameters remains robust under inclusion of positive spatial curvature.

Loop expansion and the bosonic representation of loop quantum gravity

We introduce a new loop expansion that provides a resolution of the identity in the Hilbert space of loop quantum gravity on a fixed graph. We work in the bosonic representation obtained by the canonical quantization of the spinorial formalism. The resolution of the identity gives a tool for implementing the projection of states in the full bosonic representation onto the space of solutions to the Gauss and area matching constraints of loop quantum gravity. This procedure is particularly efficient in the semiclassical regime, leading to explicit expressions for the loop expansions of coherent, heat kernel and squeezed states.

Squeezed vacua in loop quantum gravity

We introduce squeezed vacua in loop quantum gravity, a new overcomplete basis of states that contain prescribable correlations between geometric operators. We study the behavior of long-range correlations and discuss the relevance of these states for the reconstruction of a semiclassical spacetime from loop quantum gravity.

Entanglement time in the primordial universe

We investigate the behavior of the entanglement entropy of space in the primordial phase of the universe before the beginning of cosmic inflation. We argue that in this phase the entanglement entropy of a region of space grows from a zero-law to an area-law. This behavior provides a quantum version of the classical BKL conjecture that spatially separated points decouple in the approach to a cosmological singularity. We show that the relational growth of the entanglement entropy with the scale factor provides a new statistical notion of arrow of time in quantum gravity. The growth of entanglement in the pre-inflationary phase provides a mechanism for the production of the quantum correlations present at the beginning of inflation and imprinted in the CMB sky.

Entanglement entropy of squeezed vacua on a lattice

We derive a formula for the entanglement entropy of squeezed states on a lattice in terms of the complex structure J. The analysis involves the identification of squeezed states with group-theoretical coherent states of the symplectic group and the relation between the coset Sp(2N,R)/Isot(J_0) and the space of complex structures. We present two applications of the new formula: (i) we derive the area law for the ground state of a scalar field on a generic lattice in the limit of small speed of sound, (ii) we compute the rate of growth of the entanglement entropy in the presence of an instability and show that it is bounded from above by the Kolmogorov-Sinai rate.
