Deformations with cohomology constraints: a review

Deformation problems with cohomology constraints over a field of characteristic zero are controlled by L-infinity pairs. In this largely expository article we review this theory and focus on recent applications.

Hyperelliptic Brill-Noether loci

Hyperelliptic theta divisors, and more generally, Brill-Noether loci, are shown to be locally catalecticant determinantal varieties. This has many consequences for their local and global structure.

Motivic principal value integrals for hyperplane arrangements

A conjecture of Denef-Jacobs-Veys relates motivic principal value integrals of multivalued rational top-forms with cohomology support loci of rank one local systems. We give a stronger positive answer to this conjecture for hyperplane arrangements.

A remarkable subset of poles of the motivic zeta function

For any polynomial f with complex coefficients we find a remarkable subset of poles of the motivic zeta function. It is combinatorially determined by any log resolution and it admits an intrinsic interpretation in terms of contact loci of f. This uncovers a new, unexpected difficulty with proving the monodromy conjecture.

Polar loci of multivariable archimedean zeta functions

We determine, up to exponentiating, the polar locus of the multivariable archimedean zeta function associated to a finite collection of polynomials F. The result is the monodromy support locus of F, a topological invariant. We give a relation between the multiplicities of the irreducible components of the monodromy support locus and the polar orders. These generalize results of Barlet for the case when F is a single polynomial. Our result determines the slopes of the polar locus of the zeta function of F, closing a circle of results of Loeser, Maisonobe, Sabbah. We apply our main result to elucidate the topological information contained by the oblique part of the zero locus of any ideal of Bernstein-Sato type.

Birational zeta functions

We define a birational analog of the motivic zeta function of a reduced polynomial in terms of minimal models. It admits an intrinsic meaning in terms of contact loci of arcs, an analog of a result of Denef and Loeser in the motivic case. We show that for local plane curve singularities the poles of the birational zeta function essentially coincide with the poles of the motivic zeta function.

Bernstein-Sato ideals

In this paper, we review several results on the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals related to singularities of hypersurfaces. This is an exposition for the Frontiers of Science Awards in Mathematics presenting results from one of our articles, with history, motivation, and further developments.

On the embedded Nash problem

The embedded Nash problem for a hypersurface in a smooth algebraic variety, is to characterize geometrically the maximal irreducible families of arcs with fixed order of contact along the hypersurface. We show that divisors on minimal models of the pair contribute with such families. We solve the problem for unibranch plane curve germs, in terms of the resolution graph. These are embedded analogs of known results for the classical Nash problem on singular varieties.

Local structure of theta divisors and related loci of generic curves

For a generic compact Riemann surface the theta function is at every point on the Jacobian equal to its first Taylor term, up to a holomorphic change of local coordinates and multiplication by a local holomorphic unit. More generally, any Brill-Noether locus of twisted stable vector bundles on a smooth projective curve is at every point L locally étale isomorphic with its tangent cone if the Petri map at L is injective. This assumption has various consequences for Brill-Noether loci: positive answers to the monodromy conjecture for generalized theta divisors and to questions of Schnell-Yang on log resolutions and Whitney stratifications, and formulas for local b-functions, log canonical thresholds, topological zeta functions, and minimal discrepancies.

Monodromy conjecture for semi-quasihomogeneous hypersurfaces

We give a proof the monodromy conjecture relating the poles of motivic zeta functions with roots of b-functions for isolated quasihomogeneous hypersurfaces, and more generally for semi-quasihomogeneous hypersurfaces. We also give a strange generalization allowing a twist by certain differential forms.

Cohomology of contact loci

We construct a spectral sequence converging to the cohomology with compact support of the m-th contact locus of a complex polynomial. The first page is explicitly described in terms of a log resolution and coincides with the first page of McLean's spectral sequence converging to the Floer cohomology of the m-th iterate of the monodromy, when the polynomial has an isolated singularity. Inspired by this connection, we conjecture that if two germs of holomorphic functions are embedded topologically equivalent, then the Milnor fibers of the their tangent cones are homotopy equivalent.

Estimates for zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals

We give estimates for the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals. An upper bound is proved as a multivariate generalisation of the upper bound by Lichtin for the roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials. The lower bounds generalise the fact that log-canonical thresholds, small jumping numbers of multiplier ideals, and their real versions provide roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials.

Absolute sets of rigid local systems

The absolute sets of local systems on a smooth complex algebraic variety are the subject of a conjecture of N. Budur and B. Wang based on an analogy with special subvarieties of Shimura varieties. An absolute set should be the higher-dimensional generalization of a local system of geometric origin. We show that the conjecture for absolute sets of simple cohomologically rigid local systems reduces to the zero-dimensional case, that is, to Simpson's conjecture that every such local system with quasi-unipotent monodromy at infinity and determinant is of geometric origin. In particular, the conjecture holds for this type of absolute sets if the variety is a curve or if the rank is two.

Monodromy Conjecture for log generic polynomials

A log generic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with respect to a birational modification of $\mathbb{P}^n$ is by definition the image of a generic element of a high power of an ample linear series on the modification. A log very-generic hypersurface is defined similarly but restricting to line bundles satisfying a non-resonance condition. Fixing a log resolution of a product $f=f_1\ldots f_p$ of polynomials, we show that the monodromy conjecture, relating the motivic zeta function with the complex monodromy, holds for the tuple $(f_1,\ldots,f_p,g)$ and for the product $fg$, if $g$ is log generic. We also show that the stronger version of the monodromy conjecture, relating the motivic zeta function with the Bernstein-Sato ideal, holds for the tuple $(f_1,\ldots,f_p,g)$ and for the product $fg$, if $g$ is log very-generic.

Absolute sets and the Decomposition Theorem

We give a framework to produce constructible functions from natural functors between categories, without need of a morphism of moduli spaces to model the functor. We show using the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence that any natural (derived) functor on constructible sheaves on smooth complex algebraic varieties can be used to construct a special kind of constructible sets, called absolute sets, generalizing a notion introduced by Simpson in presence of moduli. We conjecture that the absolute sets of local systems satisfy a "special varieties package", among which is an analog of the Manin-Mumford, Mordell-Lang, and André-Oort conjectures. The conjecture gives a simple proof of the Decomposition Theorem for all semi-simple perverse sheaves, assuming the Decomposition Theorem for the geometric ones. We prove the conjecture in the rank one case by showing that the closed absolute sets in this case are finite unions of torsion-translated affine tori. This extends a structure result of the authors for cohomology jump loci to any other natural jump loci. For example, to jump loci of intersection cohomology and Leray filtrations. We also show that the Leray spectral sequence for the open embedding in a good compactification degenerates for all rank one local systems at the usual page, not just for unitary local systems.

On contact loci of hyperplane arrangements

We give an explicit expression for the contact loci of hyperplane arrangements and show that their cohomology rings are combinatorial invariants. We also give an expression for the restricted contact loci in terms of Milnor fibers of associated hyperplane arrangements. We prove the degeneracy of a spectral sequence related to the restricted contact loci of a hyperplane arrangement and which conjecturally computes algebraically the Floer cohomology of iterates of the Milnor monodromy. We give formulas for the Betti numbers of contact loci and restricted contact loci in generic cases.

Zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals -- II

We have recently proved a precise relation between Bernstein-Sato ideals of collections of polynomials and monodromy of generalized nearby cycles. In this article we extend this result to other ideals of Bernstein-Sato type.

Zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals

We prove a conjecture of the first author relating the Bernstein-Sato ideal of a finite collection of multivariate polynomials with cohomology support loci of rank one complex local systems. This generalizes a classical theorem of Malgrange and Kashiwara relating the b-function of a multivariate polynomial with the monodromy eigenvalues on the Milnor fibers cohomology.
