The role of axisymmetric flow configuration in the estimation of the analogue surface gravity and related Hawking like temperature

For axially symmetric flow of dissipationless inhomogeneous fluid onto a non rotating astrophysical black hole under the influence of a generalized pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potential, we investigate the influence of the background flow configuration on determining the salient features of the corresponding acoustic geometry. The acoustic horizon for the aforementioned flow structure has been located and the corresponding acoustic surface gravity $κ$ as well as the associated analogue Hawking temperature $T_{\rm AH}$ has been calculated {\it analytically}. The dependence of $κ$ on the flow geometry as well as on the nature of the back ground black hole space time (manifested through the nature of the pseudo-Schwarzschild potential used) has been discussed. Dependence of the value of $κ$ on various initial boundary conditions governing the dynamic and the thermodynamic properties of the background fluid flow has also been studied.

Supersymmetric dark energy

We study a noninteracting supersymmetric model in de Sitter spacetime. Supersymmetry breaking induces a nonzero vacuum energy density. A short distance cut-off of the order of Planck length provides a matching between the vacuum energy density and the cosmological constant related to the de Sitter expansion parameter.

Vacuum fluctuations of the supersymmetric field in curved background

We study a supersymmetric model in curved background spacetime. We calculate the effective action and the vacuum expectation value of the energy momentum tensor using a covariant regularization procedure. A soft supersymmetry breaking induces a nonzero contribution to the vacuum energy density and pressure. Assuming the presence of a cosmic fluid in addition to the vacuum fluctuations of the supersymmetric field an effective equation of state is derived in a self-consistent approach at one loop order. The net effect of the vacuum fluctuations of the supersymmetric fields in the leading adiabatic order is a renormalization of the Newton and cosmological constants.

Vacuum fluctuations in a supersymmetric model in FRW spacetime

We study a noninteracting supersymmetric model in an expanding FRW spacetime. A soft supersymmetry breaking induces a nonzero contribution to the vacuum energy density. A short distance cutoff of the order of Planck length provides a scale for the vacuum energy density comparable with the observed cosmological constant. Assuming the presence of a dark energy substance in addition to the vacuum fluctuations of the field an effective equation of state is derived in a selfconsistent approach. The effective equation of state is sensitive to the choice of the cut-off but no fine tuning is needed.

Thermodynamics of Dark Energy

Thermodynamic properties of dark energy are discussed assuming that dark energy is described in terms of a selfinteracting complex scalar. We first show that, under certain assumptions, selfinteracting complex scalar field theories are equivalent to purely kinetic k-essence models. Then we analyze the themal properties of k-essence and in particular we show that dark-energy in the phantom regime does not necessarily yield negative entropy.

Cosmological k-essence condensation

We consider a model of dark energy/matter unification based on a k-essence type of theory similar to tachyon condensate models. Using an extension of the general relativistic spherical model which incorporates the effects of both pressure and the acoustic horizon we show that an initially perturbative k-essence fluid evolves into a mixed system containing cold dark matter like gravitational condensate in significant quantities.

Cosmological tachyon condensation

We consider the prospects for dark matter/energy unification in k-essence type theories. General mappings are established between the k-essence scalar field, the hydrodynamic and braneworld descriptions. We develop an extension of the general relativistic dust model that incorporates the effects of both pressure and the associated acoustic horizon. Applying this to a tachyon model, we show that this inhomogeneous "variable Chaplygin gas" does evolve into a mixed system containing cold dark matter like gravitational condensate in significant quantities. Our methods can be applied to any dark energy model as well as to mixtures of dark energy and traditional dark matter.

Thermodynamics of k-essence

We discuss thermodynamic properties of dark energy using the formalism of field theory at finite temperature. In particular, we apply our formalism to a purely kinetic type of k-essence. We show quite generally that the entropy associated with dark-energy is always equal or greater than zero. Hence, contrary to often stated claims, a violation of the null energy condition (phantom dark energy) does not necessarily yield a negative entropy. In addition, we find that the thermal fluctuations of a k-essence field may be represented by a free boson gas with an effective number of degrees of freedom equal to c_s^{-3}.

On Cosmological Implications of Gravitational Trace Anomaly

We study the infrared effective theory of gravity that stems from the quantum trace anomaly. Quantum fluctuations of the metric induce running of the cosmological constant and the Newton constant at cosmological scales. By imposing the generalized Bianchi identity we obtain a prediction for the scale dependence of the dark matter and dark energy densities in terms of the parameters of the underlying conformal theory. For certain values of the model parameters the dark energy equation of state and the observed spectral index of the primordial density fluctuations can be simultaneously reproduced.

Chaplygin Gas Cosmology - Unification of Dark Matter and Dark Energy

The models that unify dark matter and dark energy based upon the Chaplygin gas fail owing to the suppression of structure formation by the adiabatic speed of sound. Including string theory effects, in particular the Kalb-Ramond field, we show how nonadiabatic perturbations allow a successful structure formation.

Black-Hole Accretion Disc as an Analogue Gravity Model

We formulate and solve the equations governing the transonic behaviour of a general relativistic black-hole accretion disc with non-zero advection velocity. We demonstrate that a relativistic Rankine-Hugoniot shock may form leading to the formation of accretion powered outflow. We show that the critical points of transonic discs generally do not coincide with the corresponding sonic points. The collection of such sonic points forms an axisymmetric hypersurface, generators of which are the acoustic null geodesics, i.e. the phonon trajectories. Such a surface is shown to be identical with an acoustic event horizon. The acoustic surface gravity and the corresponding analogue horizon temperature $T_{AH}$ at the acoustic horizon are then computed in terms of fundamental accretion parameters. Physically, the analogue temperature is associated with the thermal phonon radiation analogous to the Hawking radiation of the black-hole horizon. Thus, an axisymmetric black-hole accretion disc is established as a natural example of the classical analogue gravity model, for which two kinds of horizon exist simultaneously. We have shown that for some values of astrophysically relevant accretion parameters, the analogue temperature exceeds the corresponding Hawking temperature. We point out that acoustic {\it white holes} can also be generated for a multi-transonic black-hole accretion with a shock. Such a white hole, produced at the shock, is always flanked by two acoustic black holes generated at the inner and the outer sonic points. Finally, we discuss possible applications of our work to other astrophysical events which may exhibit analogue effects.

Acoustic horizons in axially symmetric relativistic accretion

Transonic accretion onto astrophysical objects is a unique example of analogue black hole realized in nature. In the framework of acoustic geometry we study axially symmetric accretion and wind of a rotating astrophysical black hole or of a neutron star assuming isentropic flow of a fluid described by a polytropic equation of state. In particular we analyze the causal structure of multitransonic configurations with two sonic points and a shock. Retarded and advanced null curves clearly demonstrate the presence of the acoustic black hole at regular sonic points and of the white hole at the shock. We calculate the analogue surface gravity and the Hawking temperature for the inner and the outer acoustic horizons.

Transient acceleration from a hybrid Chaplygin gas

We extend the Chaplygin gas model for dark matter and dark energy unification by promoting the Chaplygin gas parameter A to the potential for an extra scalar with canonical kinetic energy. The hybrid model allows for accelerated Hubble expansion to be a transient effect around redshift zero.

Unified dark matter/energy models (quartessence) based upon the Chaplygin gas D-brane fail owing to the suppression of structure formation by the adiabatic speed of sound. Nonlinear evolution of dark matter and dark energy in the Chaplygin-gas cosmology

The hypothesis that dark matter and dark energy are unified through the Chaplygin gas is reexamined. Using generalizations of the spherical model which incorporate effects of the acoustic horizon we show that an initially perturbative Chaplygin gas evolves into a mixed system containing cold dark matter-like gravitational condensate.

Dark Matter at the Center and in the Halo of the Galaxy

All presently known stellar-dynamical constraints on the size and mass of the supermassive compact dark object at the Galactic center are consistent with a ball of self-gravitating, nearly non-interacting, degenerate fermions with mass between 76 and 491 keV, for degeneracy factor g=2. Sterile neutrinos of 76 keV mass, which are mixed with at least one of the active neutrinos with a mixing angele ~10^{-7}, are produced in about the right amount in the early Universe by incoherent resonant and non-resonant scattering of active neutrinos having asymmetry of ~0.01. The former process yields sterile neutrinos with a quasi-degenerate spectrum while the latter leads to a thermal spectrum. As the production mechanism of the sterile neutrino is consistent with the constraints from large scale structure formation, core collapse supernovae, and diffuse X-ray background, it could be the dark matter particle of the Universe.
