Post-Generation Verification Dominates Retrieval Optimization: A 2^4 Factorial Ablation of RAG Pipeline Features

Modern RAG pipelines stack many enhancement features, but these features are typically validated in isolation, leaving their interactions unmeasured. We run a 2^4 full factorial ablation of four pipeline features: section expansion (SE), agentic search (AS), completeness check (CC), and table-of-contents-guided retrieval (ToC). The design crosses 16 configurations, 24 queries spanning eight interaction types, and two cloud-class models (768 designed runs, 759 completed and scored) on five public documents (78-492 pages), and every answer is scored against a verified reference. On this corpus and task, post-generation verification dominates: CC is the strongest feature (d=+0.48, p<0.001), improving accuracy, completeness, and usefulness simultaneously, and CC alone (4.31/5) is ahead of every configuration without it, including the three-feature SE+AS+ToC (4.11). ToC yields a significant gain at zero additional LLM calls (d=+0.22); AS shows a small, unstable effect that does not survive correction for multiple comparisons, helping some queries and harming others; SE is neutral. These main effects hold when every response is re-scored by two alternate LLM judges. The highest-quality configuration roughly doubles baseline latency, producing a genuine quality-latency Pareto frontier of six configurations. Feature utility is strongly query-type dependent (CC's completeness effect reaches d=+0.83 on completeness-demanding queries), so single-query-type evaluations systematically mis-rank features. We conclude that verifying answers matters more than optimizing retrieval, and that factorial designs with diverse query types are necessary to evaluate RAG features.

Three Sides of Retrieval: Factorial Evidence for Document-Side, Query-Side, and Answer-Side Complementarity in RAG

RAG systems rely on chunking, which destroys structural information in documents. Existing heading-based retrieval (Jeong et al., 2025) requires multiple LLM calls per document and returns sub-chunks within matched sections. We introduce ToC-guided page retrieval, which infers headings from visual formatting without LLM calls, embeds them as a parallel index, and loads full page sections. Across 1,280 conditions on 8 enterprise documents (5 to 195 pages), we find: (1) ToC is a significant main effect on answer quality (d = +0.41, p = 0.031), with the largest gains in completeness (+0.40) and usefulness (+0.40); (2) combined with answer-side verification, it outperforms query-side decomposition + verification (d = +0.32, p = 0.036); (3) ToC contributes 20% of citations despite adding only 2.9 pages per query; (4) gains are directionally larger on longer documents (up to +1.50 on 118 pages), though the trend does not reach significance with 8 documents; and (5) a 480-condition sensitivity analysis finds no significant parameter effects (all p > 0.38), confirming defaults are near-optimal. The contribution is both methodological (a new zero-LLM-cost retrieval algorithm) and empirical: factorial evidence that document-side, query-side, and answer-side enhancements are complementary, a three-way interaction not previously studied.

AdaPhish: AI-Powered Adaptive Defense and Education Resource Against Deceptive Emails

Phishing attacks remain a significant threat in the digital age, yet organizations lack effective methods to tackle phishing attacks without leaking sensitive information. Phish bowl initiatives are a vital part of cybersecurity efforts against these attacks. However, traditional phish bowls require manual anonymization and are often limited to internal use. To overcome these limitations, we introduce AdaPhish, an AI-powered phish bowl platform that automatically anonymizes and analyzes phishing emails using large language models (LLMs) and vector databases. AdaPhish achieves real-time detection and adaptation to new phishing tactics while enabling long-term tracking of phishing trends. Through automated reporting, adaptive analysis, and real-time alerts, AdaPhish presents a scalable, collaborative solution for phishing detection and cybersecurity education.
