A multiwavelength ALMA view of gas and dust in binary protoplanetary system AS 205: Evidence of dust asymmetric distribution

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array observations of multi-wavelength dust emissions at 3.1 and 1.3 mm; along with molecular line emissions of CO(2-1), CO(3-2), $^{13}$CO(3-2), and C$^{18}$O(3-2) at spatial resolutions of 7-45 AU towards the protoplanetary system AS 205. The dust emissions exhibit two distinct components of AS 205 N and AS 205 S, separated by 1.3 arcsec. While gas kinematics within the dust disk regions are dominated by Keplerian rotation, the more extended gas emission displays complex morphology and kinematics strongly affected by the binary gravitational interaction in the outer regions. The stellar masses of AS 205 N and AS 205 S are estimated at $0.78\pm0.19$ and $1.93\pm0.86$ M$_\odot$, respectively. Azimuthal variation is observed in the spectral index distribution of both disks. In AS 205 N, the spectral index minimum in the southwest is coincident with the peaks of CO($2-1$), CO($3-2$), and $^{13}$CO($3-2$) integrated intensity and the relative position of its southern counterpart. On the other hand, the spectral index distribution in AS 205 S exhibits two prominent maxima, with the one in the northeast aligning with the peak of $^{13}$CO($3-2$), and the peak in the south coinciding with local maxima in CO($2-1$) and CO($3-2$) azimuthal profiles. These results suggest a correlation between dust grain size and/or optical depth with the gas distributions. Dust trapping along the spiral arms possibly contributes to the spectral index minima in AS 205 N; however, the observed asymmetry across both disks suggests the involvement of additional mechanisms.

Evidence of Grain Alignment by Magnetically Enhanced Radiative Torques from Multiwavelength Dust Polarization Modeling of HL Tau

Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) has revolutionized the field of dust polarization in protoplanetary disks across multiple wavelengths. Previous observations and empirical modeling suggested multiple mechanisms of dust polarization toward HL Tau, including grain alignment and dust scattering. However, a detailed modeling of dust polarization based on grain alignment physics is not yet available. Here, using our updated POLARIS code, we perform numerical modeling of dust polarization arising from both grain alignment by Magnetically Enhanced Radiative Torque (MRAT) mechanism and self-scattering to reproduce the HL Tau polarization observed at three wavelengths 0.87, 1.3, and 3.1$\,$mm. Our modeling results show that the observed multi-wavelength polarization could be reproduced only when large grains contain embedded iron inclusions and those with slow internal relaxation must have wrong internal alignment (i.e., the grain's major axis parallel to its angular momentum). The abundance of iron embedded inside grains in the form of clusters is constrained to be $\gtrsim 16$%, and the number of iron atoms per cluster is $N_{\rm cl} \sim 9\times10^2$. Maximum grain sizes probed at wavelengths $λ$ = 0.87, 1.3, and 3.1$\,$mm are constrained at $\sim$ 60, 80, and 90$\,μ$m, respectively.

Euclidean distance degree of complete intersections via Newton polytopes

In this note, we consider a complete intersection $X=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n : f_1(x)= \ldots = f_m(x)=0\}, n>m$ and study its Euclidean distance degree in terms of the mixed volume of the Newton polytopes. We show that if the Newton polytopes of $f_j,j=1,\ldots, m$ contain the origin then when these polynomials are generic with respect to their Newton polytopes, the Euclidean distance degree of $X$ can be computed in terms of the mixed volume of Newton polytopes associated to $f_j$. This is a generalization for the result by P. Breiding, F. Sottile and J. Woodcock in case $m=1$.

Admissibility of local systems for some classes of line arrangements

Let $\A$ be a line arrangement in the complex projective plane $\PP^2$. Denote by $M$ its complement and by $\M$ the set of points in $\A$ with multiplicity at least 3. A rank one local system $\mathcal{L}$ on $M$ is admissible if roughly speaking the dimension of the cohomology groups $H^m(M,\mathcal{L})$ can be computed directly from the cohomology algebra $H^{*}(M,\Bbb{C})$. In this work, we give a sufficient condition for the admissibility of all rank one local systems on $M$.

Bifurcation set, M-tameness, Asymptotic critical values and Newton polyhedrons

Let $F=(F_1, F_2, ..., F_m): \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}^m$ be a polynomial dominant mapping with $n>m$. In this paper we give the relations between the bifurcation set of $F$ and the set of values where $F$ is not M-tame as well as the set of generalized critical values of $F$. We also construct explicitly a proper subset of $\mathbb{C}^m$ in terms of the Newton polyhedrons of $F_1, F_2, ..., F_m$ and show that it contains the bifurcation set of $F$. In the case $m= n-1$ we show that $F$ is a locally $C^{\infty}$-trivial fibration if and only if it is a locally $C^0$-trivial fibration.
