Geometry of integrable dynamical systems on 2-dimensional surfaces

This paper is devoted to the problem of classification, up to smooth isomorphisms or up to orbital equivalence, of smooth integrable vector fields on 2-dimensional surfaces, under some nondegeneracy conditions. The main continuous invariants involved in this classification are the left equivalence classes of period or monodromy functions, and the cohomology classes of period cocycles, which can be expressed in terms of Puiseux series. We also study the problem of Hamiltonianization of these integrable vector fields by a compatible symplectic or Poisson structure.

New results on the linearization of Nambu structures

In a paper with Jean-Paul Dufour in 1999 \cite{DufourZung-Nambu1999}, we gave a classification of linear Nambu structures, and obtained linearization results for Nambu structures with a nondegenerate linear part. There was a case left open in \cite{DufourZung-Nambu1999}, namely the case of smooth linearization of Nambu structures with a Type 1 hyperbolic linear part which satisfies a natural signature condition. In this paper, we will show that such hyperbolic Nambu structures are also smoothly linearizable. We will also give a strong version of the analytic linearization theorem in the analytic case, improving a result obtained in \cite{DufourZung-Nambu1999}.

Rigidity of Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds

This paper is about the rigidity of compact group actions in the Poisson context. The main resut is that Hamiltonian actions of compact semisimple type are rigid. We prove it via a Nash-Moser normal form theorem for closed subgroups of SCI-type. This Nash-Moser normal form has other applications to stability results that we will explore in a future paper. We also review some classical rigidity results for differentiable actions of compact Lie groups and export it to the case of symplectic actions of compact Lie groups on symplectic manifolds.

Entropy of geometric structures

We give a notion of entropy for general gemetric structures, which generalizes well-known notions of topological entropy of vector fields and geometric entropy of foliations, and which can also be applied to singular objects, e.g. singular foliations, singular distributions, and Poisson structures. We show some basic properties for this entropy, including the \emph{additivity property}, analogous to the additivity of Clausius--Boltzmann entropy in physics. In the case of Poisson structures, entropy is a new invariant of dynamical nature, which is related to the transverse structure of the characteristic foliation by symplectic leaves.

Galoisian obstructions to non-Hamiltonian integrability

We show that the main theorem of Morales--Ramis--Simo about Galoisian obstructions to meromorphic integrability of Hamiltonian systems can be naturally extended to the non-Hamiltonian case. Namely, if a dynamical system is meromorphically integrable in the non-Hamiltonian sense, then the differential Galois groups of the variational equations (of any order) along its solutions must be virtually Abelian

Proper Groupoids and Momentum Maps: Linearization, Affinity and Convexity

We show that proper Lie groupoids are locally linearizable. As a consequence, the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid is a smooth orbispace (a Hausdorff space which locally looks like the quotient of a vector space by a linear compact Lie group action). In the case of proper (quasi-)symplectic groupoids, the orbit space admits a natural integral affine structure, which makes it into an affine orbifold with locally convex polyhedral boundary, and the local structure near each boundary point is isomorphic to that of a Weyl chamber of a compact Lie group. We then apply these results to the study of momentum maps of Hamiltonian actions of proper (quasi-)symplectic groupoids, and show that these momentum maps preserve natural transverse affine structures with local convexity properties. Many convexity theorems in the literature can be recovered from this last statement and some elementary results about affine maps.

A note on equivariant normal forms of Poisson structures

We prove an equivariant version of the local splitting theorem for tame Poisson structures and Poisson actions of compact Lie groups. As a consequence, we obtain an equivariant linearization result for Poisson structures whose transverse structure has semisimple linear part of compact type.

Equivariant normal form for nondegenerate singular orbits of integrable Hamiltonian systems

We consider an integrable Hamiltonian system with n-degrees of freedom whose first integrals are invariant under the symplectic action of a compact Lie group G. We prove that the singular Lagrangian foliation associated to this Hamiltonian system is symplectically equivalent, in a G-equivariant way, to the linearized foliation in a neighborhood of a compact singular non-degenerate orbit. We also show that the non-degeneracy condition is not equivalent to the non-resonance condition for smooth systems.

Levi decomposition for smooth Poisson structures

We prove the existence of a local smooth Levi decomposition for smooth Poisson structures and Lie algebroids near a singular point. In the appendix of this paper, we show an abstract Nash-Moser normal form theorem, which generalizes our Levi decomposition result and which may be helpful in the study of other smooth normal form problems.

Linearization of proper groupoids

We prove the following result, conjectured by Alan Weinstein: every smooth proper Lie groupoid near a fixed point is locally linearizable, i.e. it is locally isomorphic to the associated groupoid of a linear action of a compact Lie group. In combination with a slice theorem of Weinstein, our result implies the smooth linearizability of a proper Lie groupoid in the neighborhood of an orbit under a mild condition.

Nondegeneracy of the Lie algebra aff(n)

We show that $\mathfrak{aff}(n)$, the Lie algebra of affine transformations of ${\mathbb R}^n,$ is formally and analytically nondegenerate in the sense of A. Weinstein. This means that every analytic (resp., formal) Poisson structure vanishing at a point with a linear part corresponding to $\mathfrak{aff}(n)$ is locally analytically (resp., formally) linearizable.
